Menendez brothers' bid for freedom delayed until January

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Needing to hold on to the ball late, fourth-ranked Penn State made the plays it needed to for its great escape and keep its playoff hopes alive on Saturday night. A dreadful 1-for-11 on third down, the Nittany Lions came up with three huge fourth-down conversions on their final drive, and managed the three timeouts at their disposal to effectively run out the clock for a 26-25 at Minnesota pn Saturday night. With the win, the Nittany Lions finish the regular season 5-0 on the road for the first time since 1994. They are now 10-1 overall and host Maryland in next week's season finale. "We just wanted to end the game on our terms," Penn State coach James Franklin said. "We had (an extra point) earlier in the game that they returned 93 yards, or whatever it was. We wanted to be able to possess the ball with the game on the line, and you've got to be able to get one yard, and we've been able to do that for the most part this season." Facing a fourth-and-1 with 3:38 left, the Nittany Lions faked a punt — direct snapping to upman Luke Reynolds, who scampered 32 yards to extend the drive. Having punted the ball away on fourth down earlier in the game in short yardage situation, Franklin and the Nittany Lions' gutsy gamble paid off. "(Offensive lineman) Dom Rulli deserves a ton of credit," Franklin said. "He's the quarterback of that play. We've called it in other games this year, but unless you have the right look, you can't run it. Typically, they're going to be in safe. They had their defense on the field. I thought it was going to be safe again. And then, when we ran our punt team on, they ran their punt return team out, so I thought we had a chance. "And then, the look allowed us to run it. Luke Reynolds, that was a huge play for him." On the second conversion, Drew Allar rammed forward for 2 yards on another fourth-and-1 for a first down. Then, on the final play with 26 seconds left, Allar found Tyler Warren wide open on the left side for 11 yards on fourth down and the Nittany Lions ran out the clock. "He goes to the backside, we make the surrender call, which means once you get the first down, get down whether you can score or not," Franklin said of the final play. "Tyler Warren does exactly the way he's coached. We're hoping to hit the back in the flat there, and Drew extends to play and then finds Tyler on the backside. "There were some times when you're the quarterback and you're expecting things to be picked up and guys are coming clean. You've got to keep your poise and composure right there, and I thought for the most part, he did that." Penn State outgained Minnesota 361-281, and despite rushing for just 10 yards in the first half, ended up with 117 yards on the ground. Nicholas Singleton led the rushing attack for Penn State with 13 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. Overcoming two sacks and some scratchy moments early, Allar finished 21-of-28 for 244 yards with two total touchdowns, as he also had nine carries for 30 yards with a rushing score. Warren led the way receiving with eight catches for 102 yards, while Omari Evans caught a pair of passes for 51 yards with a 45-yard touchdown to his credit. Minnesota had a look at the end zone with 5:51 left, but its 11-play, 67-yard drive stalled out as quarterback Max Brosmer fired over the middle into the end zone for Elijah Spencer, but the pass sailed incomplete on third-and-goal from the PSU 8. Story continues below video Rather than going for the touchdown, the Gophers settled for a 26-yard field goal by Dragan Kesich to cut the Penn State lead to 26-25 with 5:48 remaining. Zakee Wheatley recovered a fumble by Brosmer on the first play of the fourth quarter. Off the takeaway, Penn State threatened but couldn't get into the end zone after Allar threw incomplete looking for Warren in the right corner of the end zone on third-and-10 from the Minnesota 15. But despite the incompletion, the Nittany Lions came away with points as Ryan Barker hit from 32 yards to extend the Penn State lead to 26-22 with 11:51 left. After forcing a three-and-out on Minnesota's second drive of the half, Penn State hitched its momentum to Warren and Singleton. Allar hit Warren on three straight passes for 30 yards before Singleton broke a 15-yard gain down the right side. Then on first down, Singleton busted out to the left and rolled 12 yards to give Penn State its first lead of the night 23-22 with 3:43 left in the third quarter. Coming out of the locker room with the ball to start the second half, the Gophers used a 9-play, 51-yard drive to extend their lead to 22-16 on a 42-yard field goal by Kesich with 9:59 left in the third quarter. A 4-yard touchdown run by Allar set up a potential game-tying score, but Minnesota's Jack Henderson had other ideas. Henderson blocked Barker's extra point, and Ethan Robinson returned for a two-point conversion with 19 seconds left to give Minnesota a 19-16 lead at the half. Henderson's blocked extra point was the second blocked kick of the half as Derik LeCaptain blocked Riley Thompson's punt with 1:10 remaining in the half. Penn State narrowly outgained Minnesota in the first half, 169-154, but couldn't generate anything on the ground in the first 30 minutes — rushing for only 10 yards on 13 attempts. The Gophers rushed for 84 yards, led by the tandem of Darius Taylor and Marcus Major's combined 83 yards and a touchdown. Major's 20-yard touchdown put Minnesota on the board with 8:57 left in the first quarter after Penn State refused to go for it on fourth-and-1 on its first drive of the game. Allar went 14-of-18 for 159 yards with a 45-yard touchdown on a seam route to Evans for Penn State's first score of the half to make it 10-7 with 12:48 to go in the second quarter. Despite his efficiency, Allar ate a pair of sacks that set the offense back. "The margins this time of year on the road are small," Franklin said. "I thought the turnovers were very, very significant. If we don't have the two mishaps on special teams, then I think it's a very, very different game. So, yeah, I think that was big. When you talk about a team that leads the Big Ten in turnover ratio, we knew that was going to be a major factor in this game." UP NEXT Penn State: Hosts Maryland to finish the regular season. Minnesota: Goes on the road to face Wisconsin next Saturday at 11 a.m.Alec Bohm has been a frequent name on the rumor mill ever since the Phillies' season crashed and burned with the NLDS upset from the Mets. Manager Rob Thomson is aware, but vouching for his third baseman. Thomson, who is with the Phillies' front office group this week in Dallas for the MLB Winter Meetings, joined the MLB Network desk on Monday night to talk about where the team is headed next . On the subject of Bohm, Thomson was direct: "I know the rumors are flying all over the place. We're not shopping him." But... "People are approaching us on him, so you gotta listen." The rest of what Thomson told the MLB Network panel about Bohm: "This guy has improved so much, not just physically, but mentally over the course of the year and the 3-4 years he's been in the big leagues. "[Infield coach Bobby Dickerson], who [analyst Buck Showalter] knows very well, has done an unbelievable job with Alec, getting him to be better defensively, throwing accuracy, glove action. "He's a really good hitter because he does the things that I was talking about, not chasing, he does get good pitches to hit. He uses the entire field, he makes contact, that's why he's so good hitting behind [Bryce Harper], because he's gonna put the ball in play with runners in scoring position. He's not gonna strike out. You can pretty much book an RBI if Alec is at the plate with less than two outs and runners in scoring position." [ MLB Network ] "I know the rumors are flying all over the place — we're not shopping [Alec Bohm]." Phillies manager Rob Thomson shuts down the speculation on his All-Star 3B 👀 #MLBTonight | @SageUSAmerica pic.twitter.com/WJA4hDr6Zu In the first half, he was surging, slashing .295/.348/.482 with 11 homers, 33 doubles, and 70 runs batted in. In the second half, he fell off, dipping down to a .251/.299/.382 line with only four homers, 11 doubles, 27 RBI, and mounting frustration. That carried into the postseason with the NLDS, where he continued to struggle and was even benched to start Game 2 , all as the Phillies' championship aspirations burned out quickly. The early-October meltdown took the Phillies into the offseason with some sort of change anticipated by most, and with big money already committed to the likes of position stars Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, and J.T. Realmuto, a clear line got pointed toward Bohm with clubs like the Mariners appearing on the trade interest radar . On Monday night though, Thomson pumped the brakes a bit. President Bola Tinubu is committed to ending insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East and Cross River State, the Minister of Defence, Dr Badaru Abubakar, stated on Thursday. Speaking in Enugu, Abubakar praised the administration’s progress in combating insecurity nationwide, especially in the Southeast and Cross River State, over the past year. He emphasised Tinubu’s renewed determination to eliminate all forms of insecurity, building on the successes achieved so far. This commitment aligns with Tinubu’s Independence Day address, where he highlighted his administration’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the country. The President noted that his administration has eliminated over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders and restored peace to hundreds of communities in the North. He also promised to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and unemployment. He said, “There is a renewed determination to do more in the fight against all forms of insecurity including the agitations for Biafra by President Tinubu. “President Tinubu has directed me to come and engage with you to find a lasting solution to insecurity. “Without security, there would be no peace and development. I know that people in this zone are predominantly businessmen and women who need security and peace for their businesses to flourish. “We need to get candid suggestions and information on how we will practically do more and enthrone lasting security and peace in the South-East and Cross River State axis of the country. “If insecurity persists, it should be known that it is our people whose lives and property are being threatened and destroyed; it is our people that are kidnapped and organs harvested as well.” Related News Nigeria’ll continue to prioritise social investment, says Tinubu ACF suspends chairman for criticising Tinubu’s policies Reps urge deployment of security forces to Edo communities The minister said that the Federal Government and security agencies needed the cooperation of all residents especially the leaders as it involves getting actionable intelligence to stem insecurity from its roots in the zone. He appreciated heads of security agencies and leaders of the zone and Cross River State who made the sacrifice to attend the engagement; adding, “President Tinubu is appreciative of all your efforts so far and he needs more.” After the engagement, the minister said that the stakeholders had a robust and spirited interaction which was fruitful and implementable to improve the general security of the zone. “There was a robust suggestion on how to deploy technology to tackle insecurity head-on and restore the people’s confidence and safety in the area,” he said. Speaking, Maj.-Gen. John Nwoga (rtd) said that the insecurity in the zone was heightened by activities of social media bloggers, who keep on repeating old videos of gruesome criminal activities to create fear and panic for reasons best known to them. “There is a need for our people to collectively deal with negative press, fake news and misleading videos being circulated within the zone through social media,” Nwoga said. In his remark, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada said that the Nigerian Army was putting in place a robust strategy to ensure a safe and seamless yuletide. “Through the Joint Security Task-Force in South-East, code-named ‘Operation UDO KA’, we are going to create a safe and secured environment to enable the usual mass return for Christmas once more this year; even as we have improved security generally,” Dada said. Earlier, the minister visited and held a closed-door meeting with the GOC, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, and Commanders, Principal Officers and Officers at the Division’s Headquarters, Enugu. Abubakar also visited and held a closed-door meeting with the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command of the Nigerian Air Force, AVM Usman Abdullahi, and Commanders, Principal Officers and Officers at GTC Command Headquarters, Enugu.

By Leah Nylen and Jaewon Kang | Bloomberg A judge blocked Kroger Co.’s $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons Cos. , finding the takeover would lessen competition for US grocery shoppers, in a ruling that marks a likely death knell for the deal. In a decision filed in Oregon federal court Tuesday, US District Judge Adrienne Nelson found in favor of the US Federal Trade Commission. The agency had argued that the proposed tie-up violates US antitrust law and that a division of hundreds of stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. wouldn’t do enough to replace the lost competition. Also see: Biggest question from Kroger-Albertsons trial: What’s a grocery store? “There is ample evidence that the division is not sufficient in scale to adequately compete with the merged firm and is structured in a way that will significantly disadvantage C&S as a competitor,” Nelson wrote. “The deficiencies in the disvestiture scope and structure create a risk that some or all of the divested stores will lose sales or close, as has happened in past C&S acquisitions.” Nelson’s decision is a major victory for the FTC and its outgoing Chair Lina Khan, who came under harsh criticism from conservatives and business groups for stepped-up antitrust enforcement under the Biden administration. “Today’s win protects competition in the grocery market, which will prevent prices from rising even more,” said FTC spokesperson Douglas Farrar. “This statement makes it clear that strong, reality-based antitrust enforcement delivers real results for consumers, workers, and small businesses.” Also see: Albertsons would have shed these 63 California stores A C&S Wholesale spokesperson said the company is disappointed by the court’s decision and that it looks forward to seeing how Kroger and Albertsons will determine the next steps of the proposed deal. Kroger and Albertsons didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Attorneys for the companies have said the acquisition would probably be called off if the judge ruled against the deal. Kroger shares jumped as much as 6.1% in New York trading on Tuesday, extending earlier gains. Albertsons slumped as much as 10%. Specific Market Nelson agreed with the FTC that supermarkets constitute a specific market, countering the companies’ argument that the market extends to online retailers like Amazon.com Inc. “Supermarkets are distinct from other grocery retailers,” Nelson wrote. “Supermarkets offer a larger selection of fresh and non-perishable items, a one-stop shopping experience that appeals to a particular consumer’s preference to meet all their grocery needs in one location, and a customer service focus with deli, bakery, meat, and other specialized departments.” The ruling marks a disappointing end to a two-year odyssey by Kroger and Albertsons, which sought to become a bigger player with a more substantial national footprint to better compete against larger, non-unionized rivals including Walmart Inc. Kroger and Albertsons agreed to combine in October 2022 in what would have been the biggest US grocery deal in history, bringing together more than 4,000 stores across 48 states and Washington, DC. Kroger will likely turn its focus back to improving and investing in its existing network of about 2,750 stores. Albertsons, on the other hand, could emerge again as a deal target, but is expected in the near term to invest in its roughly 2,270 stores and technology. The proposed deal has been a political hot potato, drawing pushback from elected officials, union groups and consumer advocacy firms. The companies vowed to spend $1 billion to cut prices, $1.3 billion to improve store conditions and $1 billion to raise worker wages and benefits following the deal. The FTC has increased antitrust enforcement under the Biden administration, though the results in court have been mixed. The FTC lost a challenge to Microsoft Corp.’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc. and won against Illumina Inc. over its purchase of startup Grail and against Tapestry Inc.’s planned $8.5 billion acquisition of Capri Holdings Inc. Arguments The companies and the agency fought their case in court for three weeks over the summer in Oregon, as grocery inflation came back into the political spotlight ahead of the US presidential election. Grocery inflation hit a four-decade high in 2022 due to higher costs of labor, transportation and ingredients. Price increases have moderated and are expected to stay within historical ranges, though many American shoppers still say expensive groceries continue to squeeze their ability to spend. The FTC argued that the deal would harm consumers by eliminating competition on prices and quality, making the combined entity less likely to improve its services by offering flexible hours and pickup services. It said the grocers would have more leverage over workers, which would slow wage growth and worsen benefits, and that the proposed divestiture would be inadequate. The agency tried to depict Kroger and Albertsons as the most direct competitors. It said the deal would combine the two largest “traditional supermarkets” in a market that includes Walmart and Target, but does not include Amazon, Costco, Aldi and dollar stores. The companies argued that such a definition is “antiquated” and no longer describes how people shop and pointed to various changes they have made in response to newer threats. The grocers also said joining forces would help them increase market share and improve technology to compete with Amazon, Walmart and other companies. The case is Federal Trade Commission v. Kroger Co., 24-cv-00347, US District Court, District of Oregon (Portland). Wailoku Netball team emerged victorious in a close match with a 9-7 win over the Kuku team from Nausori. On the second day of the 2024 Extra Supermarket Central Community games at the Netball Centre in Suva. For further details, refer to tomorrow’s edition of The Fiji Times .College Football Playoff director Rich Clark isn't happy there was a leak that spoiled the biggest surprise of this year's 12-team field. Moments before ESPN's final selection show aired Sunday, Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported SMU was awarded the final at-large bid in the CFP. That was notable because the biggest debate going into the show was whether the last spot would go to the Mustangs or Alabama. "I was furious," Clark said Tuesday, per Matt Hayes of USA Today . "I told all involved, you've betrayed the process." Clark said he learned of the leak when his son texted him right before the release. "There are only a certain number of people who know," he said. "I know one thing, it wasn't me. There's the selection committee, ESPN and our staff. Someone in that group (is the leak)." While the news was spoiled before the show actually started, it didn't quell the debate. The biggest argument from this year's field was whether a three-loss Alabama with a strength of schedule advantage and notable wins over Georgia and South Carolina to go with ugly losses to Oklahoma and Vanderbilt would get in over two-loss SMU. SMU controlled its own destiny going into Saturday's ACC Championship Game but lost in stunning fashion when Clemson kicker Nolan Hauser drilled a 56-yard field goal as time expired. It was the Mustangs' second three-point loss of the season, which stood in stark contrast to Alabama's 24-3 loss to 6-6 Oklahoma. Still, SMU also couldn't match the Crimson Tide's victories and overall strength of schedule. The committee ultimately gave the nod to the Mustangs, meaning they weren't punished for playing in a conference title game when Alabama was sitting at home with its three regular-season losses. College football fans who were paying attention to social media knew that was the direction the committee went even before ESPN's show aired.

Idahosa Moses The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, on Thursday, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of invading its state’s Secretariat in Benin. The PDP in a statement issued by its acting Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, alleged that the APC led one Kapuepue, during the invasion carted away properties worth millions of Naira. According to Nehikhare, the thugs also destroyed doors, windows, and office equipment at the party’s Secretariat. “Several electronics, computers and other valuable items were also carted away by the thugs, who ransacked the building with the plan to attack any person in the building”. He condemned the alleged attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a desperate and reckless attempt by the APC to intimidate the PDP and frustrate the party’s efforts at reclaiming its mandate stolen at the September 21 governorship election. He said, “It is quite disappointing and unfortunate that the APC, on Thursday, mobilised thugs to attack our party Secretariat in their desperation to frustrate and halt efforts by our great party to reclaim the mandate duly given to it by the Edo people at the September 21 governorship election. “The thugs led by Kapuepue, invaded the Secretariat, destroying and carting away properties worth millions of naira. “If the APC are confident that they won the election free and square and have nothing to hide, why are they jittery and mobilising thugs to attack the PDP Secretariat.” “This is barbaric and totally condemnable and we urge relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack and ensure that the perpetrators of this dastardly act are brought to book. “The PDP remains resolute and will not be intimidated or deterred in its pursuit for justice and the restoration of our mandate.” “We are however calling on our party members and supporters to remain calm and resolute in the face of the provocations as we explore every legal channel to reclaim our mandate”, he charged. Reacting to the allegations, the Publicity Secretary of the APC, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, described the allegation as baseless and urged the PDP to settle its internal, warning them not to drag the APC into their messy affair. He said it was absurd to label those who allegedly attacked the PDP office as APC thugs wondering if the thugs wore APC uniform or had APC paraphernalia on them. Uwadiae-Igbinigie, noted that the APC government in the state has already embarked on project the PDP government failed to carry, adding that his party was still basking in the euphoria of their victory and putting the state in the right part. He said, “How can the PDP say that the thugs that attacked their party secretariat are that of APC? Did the people have any thing on them to show that they are APC members. The allegation is baseless and their in no proof. “The allegation is weighty and criminal in nature so the PDP should be sure they have proof before making the allegation. We will urge the PDP to sort its internal problem and not drag the APC into it”. READ MORE FROM: NIGERIAN TRIBUNE Get real-time news updates from Tribune Online!
