Giants star WR Malik Nabers (toe) says he's a game-time decisionThe U.S. Department of State is warning those thinking of traveling to Spain about dangers in that country. The department issued its travel advisory for Spain to Level 2 or “Exercise Increased Caution” — citing risks of terrorism and civil unrest on Monday. The advisory warns that terrorist groups may plan attacks there, potentially targeting tourist sites, transportation hubs, markets, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, and other crowded public spaces. Such attacks could occur with little or no warning, the department said. The advisory also highlights frequent demonstrations, often tied to political or economic issues, significant holidays, or international events. Travelers are urged to avoid protests, stay vigilant in crowded areas, and follow instructions from local authorities. Related Story: Spain and Namibia at Level 2 on Monday Namibia was also updated under the advisory on Monday due to concerns over health risks and violent crimes. The department warned about home invasions, break-ins, muggings, and “smash-and-grab” incidents targeting vehicles near tourist areas or in shopping mall parking lots. Crimes of opportunity, such as the theft of money, cell phones, and personal property, remain common, they said in the travel advisory. Travelers are reminded that Namibia’s sparse population and remote destinations can leave visitors far from emergency services and medical facilities. Health facilities in the country may lack basic medications, particularly outside major cities, the department warned. For more information, . —
Stocks closed mixed on Cyber Monday, though two of the three main equity indexes established new all-time highs in the first trading session of December. Multiple stocks moved on major corporate leadership changes as investors look forward to a big piece of employment data ahead of the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting later this month. Communications services, tech stocks and consumer discretionary names led to the upside, with Amazon.com ( AMZN ) adding 1.4% on what is the biggest online shopping day of the year. But Microsoft ( MSFT ) was the top-performing Dow Jones stock , rising 1.8% during an otherwise down day for that price-weighted index. Meta Platforms ( META ), meanwhile, surged 3.2%, and another Magnificent 7 stock, Alphabet ( GOOGL ), was up 1.5%. Subscribe to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Be a smarter, better informed investor. "U.S. e-commerce exhibited strength during Thanksgiving and Black Friday, with tallies from both Adobe and Salesforce suggesting year-over-year accelerations on Thanksgiving," writes Oppenheimer analyst Rick Schafer in a recap of recent consumer activity. "We view these holiday shopping figures as bullish for AMZN and digital advertising overall, particularly for META, GOOG, TTD & PINS." The Trade Desk ( TTD ) was up 5.1% on Monday, and Pinterest ( PINS ) added 0.4% to open December. The Nasdaq Composite was up 1% to 19,403, while the S&P 500 added 0.2% to 6,047. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.3% to 44,782. Jobs data in focus "The minutes to the November FOMC meeting were consistent with Chair Powell's press conference, which noted that downside risks to the economy had diminished and that the Committee is not in a rush to cut rates back to neutral," writes economist Amy Yang in a December 2 entry in Deutsche Bank's Fed Watcher series. "In particular, 'many' participants saw somewhat diminished risk of an excessive cooling in the labor market relative to the September meeting. Moreover, as subsequent Fedspeak has highlighted, there is a growing contingent that supports a 'gradual' process of policy normalization," Yang observes. With investors continuing to adjust their expectations for interest rates , the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release data on the employment situation in November on Friday at 8:30 am Eastern time. Economists forecast the addition of approximately 200,000 jobs in November, up from 12,000 in October when hiring was impacted by hurricanes. The unemployment rate is forecast to be 4.2%, up from 4.1% in October. The next Fed meeting is scheduled for December 17-18. Stocks move on C-suite changes Super Micro Computer ( SMCI ) was up 28.7% after the company announced that a special committee of its board of directors found "no evidence of misconduct" at the management or board level related to the artificial intelligence server maker's financial reporting. "The evidence reviewed by the Special Committee did not raise any substantial concerns about the integrity of Supermicro's senior management or Audit Committee, or their commitment to ensuring that the Company's financial statements are materially accurate," Super Micro said in a press release. The company also announced that its board, acting on recommendations of the special committee, will appoint a new chief accounting officer and will replace its chief financial officer. A volatile stock lately, SMCI is up 47.7% year to date. Intel ( INTC ) was down 0.5% after the chipmaker announced that CEO Pat Gelsinger retired effective December 1, leaving his chief executive role as well as his position on the company's board of directors. INTC has named David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus interim co-CEOs and Frank Yeary, Intel's longest-tenured board member, interim executive chair. Yeary said Intel "will continue to act with urgency" to simplify and strengthen its product portfolio and advance its manufacturing and foundry capabilities and to optimize operating and capital expenses. "We are working to create a leaner, simpler, more agile Intel." INTC is down 52.4% so far in 2024. Stellantis ( STLA ) was down 6.4% following the resignation of CEO Carlos Tavares. The world's No. 4 automaker by sales issued a profit warning in September and then reported a 27% year-over-year decline in revenue in October. Noting in a press release announcing the move that "Stellantis' success since its creation has been rooted in a perfect alignment between" shareholders, the company's board and its CEO, independent director Henri de Castries cited the recent emergence of "different views" that resulted in the board and the CEO parting ways. Board chair John Elkann will lead an interim executive committee until the automaker identifies its next CEO. The process "is well underway... and will be concluded within the first half of 2025." STLA is down 46.9% year to date. Related content The Best Retail Stocks to Buy This Holiday Season Best Bargain Stocks: Cyber Monday Stocking Stuffers Don't Leave Your Heirs an IRA Tax Bomb

The tiny loss ended the benchmark index’s three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1% and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as US markets reopened following the Christmas holiday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.2%. Meta Platforms fell 0.7%, and Amazon and Netflix each fell 0.9%. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, finishing 1.8% lower. Some tech companies fared better. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.4%, Micron Technology added 0.6% and Adobe gained 0.5%. Target rose 3%, Ross Stores added 2.3%, Best Buy rose 2.9% and Dollar Tree gained 3.8%. Traders are watching to see whether retailers have a strong holiday season. The day after Christmas traditionally ranks among the top 10 biggest shopping days of the year, as consumers go online or rush to stores to cash in gift cards and raid bargain bins. US-listed shares in Honda and Nissan rose 4.1% and 16.4% respectively. The Japanese car makers announced earlier this week that the two companies are in talks to combine. All told, the S&P 500 fell 2.45 points to 6,037.59. The Dow added 28.77 points to 43,325.80. The Nasdaq fell 10.77 points to close at 20,020.36. Wall Street also got a labour market update. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Trading was expected to be subdued this week with a thin slate of economic data on the calendar.TORONTO — Everything changed for Kia Nurse when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament in the 2021 WNBA playoffs. The basketball star from Hamilton was locked in as starter for a team in the semifinals. She’d been selected as an all-star just two years prior. But in one awkward fall three years ago, she was plunged into the depths of surgery and rehab. Nurse would miss the entire 2022 season due to the injury. She signed with the Seattle Storm for the 2023 campaign before a trade landed her with the Los Angeles Sparks last season. Meanwhile, Nurse represented Canada at the Paris Olympics in August, but she struggled as the team failed to reach the knockout round for the second straight time. The common thread throughout Nurse’s recent basketball journey? She just hasn’t quite felt like herself. “I still love basketball with all of my heart, and it's my favourite thing that I get to do. And I'm so privileged to be able to say that I get to do it as a job,” Nurse said. "But the last two years for me have been just really rocky, up and down.” Nurse, 28, will become a WNBA free agent as of Feb. 1. For now, she’s continuing her Raptors broadcast work with TSN and, on Monday, announced a new playing gig. In February, Nurse will join fellow WNBAers Alysha Clark and Sydney Colson among 37 others for Athletes Unlimited’s third basketball season in Nashville. Athletes Unlimited was founded as a women’s professional softball league in 2020 before expanding to basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. Its 24-game hoops campaign switches teams weekly and concludes by crowning a season-long individual champion. Players earn points through a fantasy-style system that rewards team successes like wins as well as individual accomplishments from made three-pointers to steals to drawn fouls. Outside of the unique scoring system, the game looks like traditional basketball — a major appeal to Nurse as she attempts to tap back into her roots. “I am not proud of my performance at the Olympics and not necessarily proud of how I’ve been playing over the last two years. I just have goals of finding my true love of the game and kind of coming back and being stronger physically, being more fit and just ultimately having a good year,” Nurse said. When Nurse’s career began in 2018, many WNBA players would ply their trade overseas during the off-season as a way of staying in shape and making additional money. But over the past half-decade — and perhaps expedited by Brittney Griner’s 2022 detainment in Russia — more options have emerged stateside, including Athletes Unlimited. “The (WNBA) now has a lot of the teams that have practice facilities, so they have full-time player development, practice-facility access and that's a big piece as well. But now ultimately we have these leagues at home like AU,” Nurse said. Athletes Unlimited will not be the only professional women’s basketball operation in North America this winter. A three-on-three league called Unrivaled, founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, will tip off in January in Miami. Nurse said Unrivaled was an option for her, but she preferred Athletes Unlimited. “I wanted a place where I'm happy with basketball again, really happy with myself and how I'm playing and a having a little more confidence boost from what I've had over these last two years. And I feel like AU, for me, that five-on-five setting was a big piece of it,” Nurse said. The timing of the Athletes Unlimited schedule — deep enough into the WNBA off-season but with enough leeway to fine tune things before the 2025 campaign begins — also stood out to Nurse. Ahead of AU, Nurse said she moved her training from Toronto to Hamilton, where she could stay closer to home and avoid the long highway drives. And following two seasons in which Nurse’s WNBA teams suffered a combined 61 losses, she’s hoping to find a landing spot in free agency with a winning franchise. “I want to ... have an opportunity make a deep playoff run, be kind of like an X-Factor player, somebody who can go out there, be a three-and-D player, can help make winning plays,” she said. Nurse said she and fellow WNBA veteran Bridget Carleton have discussed what went wrong in Paris and how it can be fixed ahead of Los Angeles 2028. Management changes have already occurred with the retirement of GM Denise Dignard and a mutual parting with head coach Victor Lapena. The national team recently met up in Toronto for an informal training camp where Nurse and Carleton aimed to lay the groundwork for the culture they hope to create over the next four years. “Getting back to the basics and just enjoying playing for Canada Basketball, but also creating a really strong, bonded culture where everybody does what they need to do for our team to win," she said. "We understand our roles (and) we understand the commitment piece of it because now there's so much going on and people are all over the place." The NBA got viewers for Christmas, even while going up against NFL games. The NBA's five-game Christmas lineup was the league's most-watched in five years, with the games averaging about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, the league said Thursday based on Nielsen's preliminary numbers. It's an 84% rise over the NBA's Christmas numbers from 2023. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.” Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75. Image: https://www.globalnewslines.com/uploads/2024/12/a0f14d7c20256cc835682229a9b43cb9.jpg Continuing the adventures of his beloved characters, Florida author Nelson Cover reveals the third book of the Sessions University series, All Mortal Greatness. It is a fast-paced, technologically advanced mystery that will leave readers begging for more. Microscopic attention to detail, a keen sense of suspense, and sidebars of medical/university/criminology information make this a resounding success. Watch this author rise! Highly recommended. - Grady Harp, Amazon Top 100 Hall of Fame Reviewer Just as everything seems to be returning to normal and protagonist Thomas Simpson is beginning a new job, a prominent member of the university administration is murdered on his walk home along the campus drive. Thomas, along with Mark Berger and Zoltan Vastag, quickly identify a prime suspect, a family member of a previously murdered administrator, seeking vengeance. The three must join forces again to solve the mystery of this unwarranted murder and reveal the corruption that weaves its way through the university's highest ranks. Cover's continuing series takes a peek behind the ivory tower to the nuts and bolts of running a top-level university. Readers who like mystery thrillers, stories about contemporary academia, and even some dark academia fans, may like this series of novels. - Kathryn Picard, Librarian Book Connoisseur, 5-Stars "The bottom line for universities is that just as in society, those in power often suffer no consequences for their misdeeds and can be as evil and corrupt as the rest of the real world, regardless of their competence, charm, and charisma," Nelson Cover says. "Sessions University, existing in a parallel universe, allows the reader to witness the tragedy of ambition and malfeasance in a world beyond but relevant to the contemporary, seeing the truth about how ambition corrupts." This novel masterfully blends suspense, academic intrigue, and complex characters, making it a must-read for fans of Dan Brown. - John Kelly, Detroit Free Press All Mortal Greatness is filled with humor and larger-than-life characters in addition to the real-world issues that it illustrates. It explores the concepts of ambition and greatness, and what can happen when they are embraced by the wrong people. Fans of thriller, mystery, or academia-themed stories will love this book!
