The 45-year-old is raising two sons with a Sri Lankan-born woman, a filmmaker, and speaks fluent Mandarin, having done a doctorate in economics in China. I don’t want to sound like I’m ragging. “And then you go into the sexuality thing, and maybe there is a plethora of women out there who have 15 sexual partners in a day, but what is missing from all of it is: the why. “And so, I was given the character ... her name was Annalise DeWitt when I first started, and I was like, DeWitt? So, I did change that. I changed it to Annalise Keating. I mean, she could have been DeWitt, but it’s just so grand. “But the reason why I think I’m proud of it is because I felt it was brave of me. I haven’t always been brave in my life, but that was one moment that I was brave. I had a decision to make: I could just join the crop of women who work on TV who, to be honest, they have a certain look in the lead roles. “And, here’s the thing: When you become a celebrity, you get all kinds of messages from people. It’s like Mark Twain said: You need two types of friends ... The friends who talk about you, and the friends who tell you about people who talk about you. So, you get a lot of friends who tell you about people who talk about you. “So, there’s so many people who said, ‘Oh, she’s miscast. Annalise Keating is described as mysterious and sexual and all that, and that can’t be Viola.’ “Sanford Meisner, a great acting teacher, he said: One of the most important questions an actor can ask is: ‘Why?’ And when you ask ‘Why?’ it brings you on a journey that could be transformative. “And so, here’s what I had to do: I had to at least try to lose weight and try to be that woman who could be on television, which is not going to happen. I was about 50 years old at the time. It’s not like I was going to do Botox and start eating string beans. “So, then I had to ask some questions: Why do I have to be that woman? Why does she have to walk great in heels? Why can’t I be the size I am? And why can’t all those things be true and I be on network TV? Why can’t I take my wig off? Why can’t I wear my natural hair? “And every time I asked, ‘Why?’ I got to the truth of who Annalise was, and so then I had something to work with, which is trying the best I could with network TV writing to make her some semblance of a human being, and so that was the first thing with Annalise Keating. “I remember the phone call with Peter Nowalk, who is the showrunner-creator of ‘How to Get Away With Murder,’ and Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, and the head of the studio [ABC Entertainment Group], Paul Lee. We were all on the telephone, and I remember saying, I can’t believe I was saying this, because I wanted the job, y’all, I didn’t want to lose this job, but I heard myself say it ... I said: ‘Well, I’m not going to do this show unless she could take off her wig. And the reason is, if I take off the wig, and if I take off the makeup, they’re going to have to deal with that woman who’s been revealed. They’re going to have to deal with her crinkly, curly hair. They’re going to have to deal with the woman behind the mask. And that is a character that I could play. “And then you have to deal with why a woman would be that sexual. You can’t just do it, because here’s the thing, with sexuality and human beings, it’s not pornography. Pornography is selling the sex, right? It’s to turn people on. It’s serving a purpose. Being sexual is an extension of who you are as a human being. It’s based in memory, experience, trauma, everything. You don’t just do it. “And then when you are having sex, in my imagination, in my fantasy, every sex scene should be cringy. I mean, who has a camera in their bedroom, where it’s perfectly shot, and everyone has been in the gym for the last five months, no one puts down a towel. But I decided to deal with the woman who would be bisexual, have affairs, be married to a man who could be a murderer, and so that’s when her sexual past and her sexual abuse came up. That’s when Miss Cicely Tyson [who played Ophelia Harkness, Annalise’s mother] came into the picture. And then I felt like I was building a world that was honest; it was a world that was fantastical, but there were some threads of the truth in there, that made people lean in, and that is what I’m most proud of.” Later, when asked what her legacy would be, she added: “My legacy is to help people feel less alone. I do think that there’s something sacred when the lights go down and you’re in the audience and you have your popcorn and your Sour Patch Kids and your Diet Coke. That’s what I eat, y’all. And there’s something sacred in that relationship and that agreement. And the agreement is that I am not going to escape as an artist. I’m going to show you you. You, with all the piss and the poop, and all those private moments that you don’t want to show people, all the parts of you that you probably feel that if you share with people, it would be the most shameful part of your life. I want you to be brave enough to witness that and acknowledge that, and I want to be brave enough to give it to you. “And if I can do that, that would be a legacy. Not just the awards and the accolades, but the bravery of how well I can craft that and give it to you.”

The administration of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has come under heavy criticism over its handling of the flood crisis in the four southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla. Comparisons have been drawn between the delayed response and insufficient support for flood victims in the South and the quicker and more effective management of flooding in the northern provinces in August. The Bangkok Post spoke with political observers about the flood relief efforts and asked if there is a double standard in the government's flood response between the North and South. They were asked to explain whether the government's handling of floods was due to politics, as the ruling Pheu Thai Party is known to have limited support in the South. Sathit Wongnongtoey, a former Democrat MP from Trang, said resentment towards the ruling party among some southern residents is deep-rooted due to the Thaksin Shinawatra administration and his infamous remarks about prioritising provinces that supported his party. Moreover, the Pheu Thai-led government's lack of attention to the southern region has been observed, and the prime minister's apparent lack of urgency in taking action has led some residents to believe the region is being neglected, he said. Asked about the premier's remark that she had assigned her deputies to oversee flood management in the South, Mr Sathit criticised the prime minister and said she should be aware of public expectations and be ready to equally serve all citizens. The former MP said the coalition government should take responsibility for the state of the country because it has not done enough to give people hope. Mr Sathit said the government's popularity will be affected as it has been unable to deliver on its economic promises. Sathit: Deliver economic promises Nipit Intarasombat, a former Democrat MP from Phatthalung, said flood relief efforts are being carried out by state agencies involved, although the prime minister has yet to make a trip to the four southernmost border provinces to inspect the floods. This has left the impression the government is not giving sufficient attention and care to the situation, he said, adding that even if the entire cabinet were to visit, they would not have the same morale-boosting effects as the prime minister's presence. Due to the geography of the region, much of the floodwater in affected areas will have already subsided by the time the prime minister makes a visit and she will not be able to witness the full severity of the flooding, he said. When asked if Ms Paetongtarn has no incentive to visit because Pheu Thai has limited support in the South, he said it is hard to believe the country's leader would neglect the South simply because it is not her party's political stronghold. "I don't want to assume that she is neglecting the South simply for that reason. But the delay has cost her significant political goodwill," he said. Mr Nipit also said he believes Ms Paetongtarn cares about the well-being of the southern people, but she and her close aides lack political experience, which may have led them to miscalculate the situation. Asked if the Pheu Thai Party still has a chance to establish a stronghold in the South, Mr Nipit said it is unlikely to gain significant ground in the three southern border provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala due to several factors, including the recent flooding and the Tak Bai case in Narathiwat. Nipit: PM cares about people During last year's general election, the Pheu Thai Party did not capture a single seat in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla. Its coalition partner, the Prachachat Party, then led by Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, won all three seats in Yala. In Pattani, where five seats were available, the Prachachat Party won three seats in Constituency 1, 3 and 5, while the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) and the Democrat Party won each in Constituency 2 and Constituency 4, respectively. The five seats in Narathiwat were shared among the PPRP (Constituency 2 and 3), United Thai Nation (UTN) Party (Constituency 1), Bhumjaithai (Constituency 4) and Prachachat Party (Constituency 5). The Democrat Party won the largest share of seats, six out nine, in Songkhla (Constituency 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9) with the UTN winning in Constituency 2, the PPRP in Constituency 4 and the Bhumjaithai Party in Constituency 7. Defending the government, Pheu Thai list-MP Chanin Rungthanakiat said the mobile cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai, which coincided when the South was hit by severe flooding, had been planned weeks in advance and could not be cancelled. The prime minister, he said, decided not to inspect the flooding during its worst phase to avoid adding a burden to local officials who were focusing on relief operations. Even so, several cabinet ministers were assigned to oversee the flood relief efforts, he noted. Mr Chanin stressed the Pheu Thai Party is doing its best to refute the claim the party does not prioritise the southern region. Under the Srettha Thavisin administration, several projects in the South were given support, he said. Chanin: Let local officials work Meanwhile, academics criticise the government for its lack of preparedness in terms of evacuation shelters and failure to decentralise power to enable local authorities to more effectively manage the flood crisis. As a result, the public perceives that only the prime minister's visit and intervention can solve the issue, even if the prime minister's visit to the flood-ravaged area is more of a symbolic gesture rather than a direct solution to the problem. Srisompob Jitpiromsri, a political scientist at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani campus, said that given the size of financial aid and recovery efforts by the Interior Ministry, the government's response in both the North and South is not much different. The cabinet previously approved a change in the criteria for flood compensation payouts. Now, all affected households stand to receive a one-time payment of 9,000 baht. Under the old criteria, households flooded for 30 days or less would receive 5,000 baht, while those inundated for more than 30 days but less than 60 received 7,000 baht. Households flooded for more than 60 days were the only ones given 9,000 baht. Mr Srisompob said provincial authorities, the military, the private sector and various charity and rescue foundations have mobilised their resources to assist flood victims. Media coverage has shown the struggles and plight of the flood-ravaged communities. This has led to comparisons with the role of the government, particularly the prime minister whose visit would have eased tension and provided reassurance to those severely affected by the flooding, he said. "Ms Paetongtarn's comments about her husband being a native of the southern region have not been particularly helpful. "She shouldn't have said it at all under this situation. She should have talked about policies. When her comments are seen as out of place, the issue is dramatised," he said. Early this month, the prime minister defended herself against social media criticism about allegedly neglecting flood-hit southern provinces while touring the northern region, emphasising that providing aid takes priority over making public appearances. She responded that her family had connections to the South through her husband. "How could I neglect the South when my husband and his family are Southerners?" Srisompob: Comments aren't helpful Mr Srisompob said the issue of evacuation shelters has been a pain point for the southern region for a decade and despite having the resources, the government has yet to invest in permanent shelters for disaster relief. "The government needs to rethink its approach to disaster management, especially in the southern region where flooding is exacerbated by rising sea tides," he said. Nuttakorn Vititanon, a political scientist at Chiang Mai University, said the government needs to revamp its disaster warning and emergency response systems to ensure residents are fully informed about risks and adequately cared for. "The flood came at night and no one evacuated in the dark. Moreover, there were no shelters for them. Telling people to evacuate... but to where? So, they stayed home," he said. He was referring to recent flood situations in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in August. Mr Nuttakorn said the government appears to be avoiding confronting local communities and resorts that block water drainage and is instead trying to build flood barriers, which is not a sustainable solution. He said the prime minister does not need to visit any flood-hit areas to make instructions if local authorities have the full power to manage the situation. "But the governor doesn't and he can't instruct other agencies like the Department of Royal Irrigation. Remember when a floodgate was broken and the governor was blamed for not coordinating? "The problem was solved after the prime minister's visit. The government is setting the stage for an environmental disaster by legalising destructive fishing practices that threaten to leave Thai seas barren and marine biodiversity in ruins. Despite the relentless decline of Thailand's marine resources due to overfishing, the government is amending fishery laws to permit the use of uan lom jab, or surrounding nets, at night. These nets, which employ light fishing and fine-meshed designs stretching for kilometres, pose a dire threat to already fragile marine ecosystems. Like trawlers, this method does not target a single species -- it sweeps up everything in its path, from juvenile fish to rare marine species vital to ocean health. When trawlers were first introduced in Thailand in 1961, the catch per hour was 300 kilogrammes. By 2009, this had plummeted to just 14kg, with only 30% of the catch having economic value. Fine-meshed nets used by trawlers and anchovy fleets scoop up "trash fish," which are sent to the agro-industry to produce animal feed, further accelerating the depletion of fish stocks. The anchovy fleet's use of light fishing and fine-meshed nets has worsened the crisis. Small-scale fisherfolk pressured the government to ban surrounding nets at night, limit anchovy fleets, and push trawlers out of coastal waters. These measures offered a lifeline to marine ecosystems, but the proposed amendment threatens to undo that progress. The Pheu Thai-led coalition government, with support from the opposition and the so-called progressive People's Party, now seeks to change this. The seeds of this crisis were sown in 1996, when anchovy fleets were permitted to use light fishing at night with lift nets and falling nets, though surrounding nets were still prohibited. Even so, fish stocks plummeted. Annual catches of pla tu (mackerel), which once exceeded 140,000 tonnes, dwindled to near extinction. Juvenile pla tu are now sold as dried food or animal feed, representing a tragic loss of future stock and economic value. For Thailand's 300,000 small-scale fishing families, sustainable fishing and healthy marine ecosystems are essential to their livelihoods. They have long fought against industrial fishing practices, but their voices are often drowned out by powerful industry lobbyists and politicians. Now, they are standing firm against the new amendment, which would legalise surrounding nets at night for the first time in Thai history. Proponents of the amendment claim it is a technical correction, arguing the current law was hastily implemented under the military junta to address EU sanctions for illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. However, critics say this justification obscures the true intent: to roll back progress and prioritise the profits of large fishing businesses at the expense of ecological sustainability. While proponents insist that surrounding nets will only be allowed beyond 12 kilometres from shore, they fail to mention that these nets will intercept pla tu migration routes in the Gulf of Thailand, cutting off fish before they can reach coastal areas. Surrounding nets with fine-meshed designs spanning kilometres indiscriminately scoop up juvenile fish, devastating the ocean's food chain, fish stocks, and long-term economic potential. One year's worth of juvenile fish lost to this method could generate billions of baht if allowed to mature, yet they are discarded as bycatch or sold as cheap animal feed, squandering a renewable resource for short-term gain. Thailand is already among the region's worst offenders for allowing small net sizes. While neighbouring countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh enforce minimum mesh sizes of 6cm or larger, Thailand's "standard" of 2.5cm often shrinks to a mere 3mm in practice, destroying marine biodiversity and disrupting ecosystems critical to sustainability. What's at stake is more than just fish stocks. Pla tu is not only a source of food but a cultural symbol connecting generations. Losing this species would be both an ecological and cultural tragedy. This reckless decision also jeopardises the country's food security. Healthy seas are vital for providing affordable protein to millions of Thais. Destroying juvenile fish populations will push small-scale fisherfolk further into poverty, exacerbate inequality, and drive up seafood prices for consumers. The government and opposition parties must recognise the long-term consequences of siding with big industry. This amendment is a step toward ecological collapse. On Nov 29, small-scale fishermen from 15 provinces petitioned the House of Representatives to halt this impending disaster. The petition was submitted ahead of the draft law's reading in the upcoming parliamentary session. Parliament must reject this amendment and focus on restoring marine ecosystems. Supporting small-scale fisherfolk is not just the right thing to do -- it is essential for Thailand's future. The development comes after a source, whom CBC has agreed not to name, confirmed Daniels was involved in an altercation early Tuesday morning in Ottawa, where he was attending the Assembly of First Nations special chiefs assembly. Ottawa Police Service spokesperson Julie Kavanagh said while the police service doesn't confirm incidents by victim's name, officers were called to the city's ByWard Market area around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday for a "disturbance." "A man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries," Kavanagh said in a statement emailed to CBC Thursday. The incident was still under investigation at that point, she said. It's still unclear if Daniels remains in hospital. Stocks slipped in afternoon trading Friday as Wall Street closes out a rare bumpy week. The S&P 500 was up by less than 0.1% and is on track for a loss for the week after three straight weekly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 58 points, or 0.1% to 43,856 as of 3 p.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq rose 0.1% and is hovering around its record. Broadcom surged 24.9% for the biggest gain in the S&P 500 after the semiconductor company beat Wall Street’s profit targets and gave a glowing forecast, highlighting its artificial intelligence products. The company also raised its dividend. The company's big gain helped cushion the market's broader fall. Pricey stock values for technology companies like Broadcom give the sector more weight in pushing the market higher or lower. Tech companies, and Wall Street, expect demand for AI to continue driving growth for semiconductor and other technology companies. Even so, some big tech stocks were in the red Friday. Wall Street's rally stalled this week amid mixed economic reports and ahead of the Federal Reserve's last meeting of the year. The central bank will meet next week and is widely expected to cut interest rates for a third time since September. Expectations of a series of rate cuts has driven the S&P 500 to 57 all-time highs so far this year . The Fed has been lowering its benchmark interest rate following an aggressive rate hiking policy that was meant to tame inflation. It raised rates from near-zero in early 2022 to a two-decade high by the middle of 2023. Inflation eased under pressure from higher interest rates, nearly to the central bank's 2% target. The economy, including consumer spending and employment, held strong despite the squeeze from inflation and high borrowing costs. A slowing job market, though, has helped push a long-awaited reversal of the Fed's policy. Inflation rates have been warming up slightly over the last few months. A report on consumer prices this week showed an increase to 2.7% in November from 2.6% in October. The Fed's preferred measure of inflation, the personal consumption expenditures index, will be released next week. Wall Street expects it to show a 2.5% rise in November, up from 2.3% in October. The economy, though, remains solid heading into 2025 as consumers continue spending and employment remains healthy, said Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY. “Still, the outlook is clouded by unusually high uncertainty surrounding regulatory, immigration, trade and tax policy,” he said.
