Former female sports greats, media figures, and even a conservative lawmaker tore into a recent New York Times article for referring to women as "non-transgender women." Tennis legend Martina Navratilova and other prominent people blasted the piece online for the characterization, stating the outlet should just be referring to biological women as women. "NYT- you stink. We are women, NOT TRANSGENDER WOMEN. Just WOMEN will do in the future," Navratilova wrote on the social media platform on Friday. SJSU TRANSGENDER VOLLEYBALL SCANDAL: TIMELINE OF ALLEGATIONS, POLITICAL IMPACT AND A RAGING CULTURE MOVEMENT In an article detailing the San Jose State University Spartans transgender athlete scandal, the New York Times referred to the biological female athletes on the team as "non-transgender women." (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) The Times published an article Thursday which documented the inner turmoil of a women’s college volleyball team – the San Jose State University Spartans – attempting to field a transgender female player in upcoming tournament games. The attempt to get the trans player to compete has caused division, not only in the league, but among team members, some of whom are suing their own team. The outlet reported, "Earlier this month, a senior co-captain of the Spartans and the assistant coach filed a lawsuit to stop the transgender athlete from playing in this week’s Mountain West Conference tournament, claiming that she violates Title IX rights to gender equity at federally funded institutions." The co-captain was joined by 10 female volleyball players, most of whom are on other teams that play against the Spartans. The Times described the situation as a "complicated mess," noting that "some of the Spartans no longer talk to one another at practice or outside of games" and adding that even the head coach – who supports the trans student – "has stopped talking to some players off the court, too." The Times reporter Juliet Macur appeared to step into the debate as well, as further down in her piece, she employed the term "non-transgender women" as one way to distinguish biological women. Describing some of the science that fuels that debate as to whether trans women can compete in women’s sport, Macur wrote, "On its website, the N.C.A.A. says trans volleyball players are eligible to play if their testosterone level is less than 10 nanomoles per liter — that’s at least four times more than what many experts say is the top of the range for non-transgender women, and in the typical range for adult men." At other points in the piece, the reporter also referred to the biological female athletes as "athletes assigned female at birth." (Angel Martinez/Getty Images for Laureus) Frustrated social media users trashed these controversial descriptions of women. British Olympian and activist Sharron Davies posted, "Written in the NYT ... women are now Non-transgender women! Just wow! How anyone can say this isn’t a men’s rights movement I’ll never know, whilst women lose their rights, their words, their safeguards, their sports, their sex discrimination laws... I will never understand." Anti-trans activism account "WomenAreReal" addressed the outlet on X, stating, "Hey @nytimes Don’t call us ‘non-transgender women.’ Just stop it. Stop all the offensive terms for us." The account listed other politically correct terms trans activists have used to referred to biological women, including, "birthing parent," "uterus haver," "menstruator," and "vaginal presenting." "We are WOMEN!" the account added. Journalist Tiffany Wong posted, "LMAO, New York Times is calling normal, sane women ‘non-transgender women.’" Conservative journalist Andy Ngo remarked, "In woke ideology, there are only transgender women and non-transgender women." Even Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., trashed the outlet, stating, "The New York Times, everybody, where women are defined as ‘non-transgender women.’ What bs. #HoldTheLine." Fox News Digital reached out to The New York Times for comment, but did not immediately hear back. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Gabriel Hays is an associate editor for Fox News Digital.

NoneMax Verstappen has been stripped of pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix . The Dutchman had topped the timesheets but was under investigation, accused of getting in the way of George Russell . And the stewards have now ruled that he was "driving unnecessarily slowly" in front of the Mercedes man. As a result, Verstappen has been handed a one-place grid penalty. It means Russell inherits pole and will now start ahead of the Red Bull racer. Verstappen has also had one penalty point added to his racing licence. Explaining their decision, the stewards wrote: "Car 1 [Verstappen was on a different preparation strategy to that of Car 63 [Russell]. Car 1 was well outside of the delta and the driver of Car 1 explained he had let Cars 4 [Lando Norris] and 14 [Fernando Alonso] past. "The driver of Car 63 claimed that he had adhered to the delta and did not expect Car 1 to be on the racing line. He stated that if a car was going slow in a high speed corner, it should not be on the racing line. "The stewards regard this case as a complicated one in that clearly Car 1 did not comply with the Race Director’s Event Notes and clearly was driving, in our determination, unnecessarily slowly considering the circumstances. "It was obvious the driver of Car 1 was attempting to cool his tyres. He also could see Car 63 approaching as he looked in his mirror multiple times whilst on the small straight between Turns 11 and 12. "Unusually, this incident occurred when neither car was on a push lap. Had Car 63 been on a push lap, the penalty would have most likely been the usual three-grid position penalty, however in mitigation of penalty, it was obvious that the driver of Car 63 had clear visibility of Car 1 and that neither car was on a push lap." Before the penalty, Verstappen had been left delighted by the pace he found in his Red Bull during qualifying. Earlier in the day, he had struggled to make much progress after losing several places on the opening lap of the sprint. But after securing what he thought would be pole position the Dutchman said: "It's a crazy turnaround. I didn't expect that. Well done to the team for giving me a car that is more connected. We changed some bits on the car, but I never thought it would make such a swing in performance. That is encouraging and I hope it continues into the race." UCF coach Gus Malzahn is resigning from the Knights to become the new offensive coordinator at Florida State , sources confirmed to CBS Sports' John Talty. Malzahn posted a 28-24 record in four seasons with the Knights but had consecutive losing seasons after joining the Big 12. Malzahn is tasked with repairing a Florida State offense that struggled mightily during a lifeless campaign. The Seminoles finished No. 131 in the nation in total offense and scoring offense, mustering only 15.8 points per game against an ACC schedule one year after going 13-1 with a conference championship. The Knights were seen as a potential dark horse heading into the Big 12, but they've struggled with quarterback issues. Four different players took major snaps in 2024 as the Knights finished only 2-7 in conference play and 4-8 overall. The record was the worst at UCF since 0-12 in George O'Leary's final season in 2015. CBS Sports will update this breaking news story as more information becomes available.
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanian lawmakers on Monday voted narrowly in favor of a new pro-European coalition government led by incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. The move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania's 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party, or PSD, the center-right National Liberal Party, PNL, the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a Dec. 1 parliamentary election , a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement Monday. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis," he said. "It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romani's 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It's widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. President Klaus Iohannis was expected to swear in the new government later Monday. Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the Dec. 8 runoff, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race . “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organize the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate. George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all lawmakers from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute. Stephen McGrath reported from Warwick, England.
MANILA, Philippines — On the 15th anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre that left 58 people dead, including 34 media practitioners, a Malacañang official assured that the government will continue to ensure that journalists can do their jobs of defending the truth without fear of reprisal. In a statement on Saturday, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) honored the memory of the 58 victims of the 2009 bloodbath in Ampatuan, Maguindanao—the single deadliest attack against journalists in the country’s history. “The administration of President Marcos vows continued support for the media in defending truth and addressing the demands of a modern press,” said the PTFoMS, led by its recently appointed Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. READ: Ampatuan massacre victims’ kin still crying out for help The agency also reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and freedoms of journalists in the Philippines,” and appealed to all sectors of society to help uphold press freedom and protect journalists’ rights. “A free press is essential to a functioning democracy, and we must all contribute to ensuring that journalists can do their jobs without fear of reprisal ... We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that justice prevails, and that the Philippines remains a safe place for journalists to work,” the PTFoMS added. On Nov. 23, 2009, armed men abducted and murdered 58 people accompanying the filing of the certificate of candidacy of then Buluan, Maguindanao Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu who was running for Maguindanao governor. Mangudadatu was challenging Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., son of then Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., the patriarch of Mindanao’s leading Muslim political clan. Andal and his brother Zaldy Ampatuan were later convicted to life imprisonment without parole for the 57 killings along with 28 co-accused, including policemen. The body of a 58th victim was never found. The victims included Mangudadatu’s wife, his two sisters, media practitioners, lawyers, aides and motorists who witnessed the abduction or were mistakenly identified as part of the six-vehicle convoy. The PTFoMS said the massacre “serves as a stark reminder of the dangers media workers face in pursuit of truth and accountability.” The PTFOMs also renewed its commitment to strengthen its efforts to prevent and address media killings and violence, and enhance coordination among government agencies and media organizations, especially at the local level. From Aloysius Attah, Onitsha Nigeria’s former Minister of Aviation Chief Osita Chidoka has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Chidoka, also a former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, announced his resignation in a letter dated 29th November 2024, which was submitted to the PDP Ward Chairman in his Obosi community, Anambra State. The former minister stated that he was leaving the PDP with immense respect and gratitude, while reaffirming his commitment to good governance, national unity, and honest public service. Chidoka disclosed that he would now focus on his Non-Governmental Organisation, the Athena Centre, which is dedicated to enhancing public policy and leadership across Nigeria. The letter read: “As I step away from active partisan politics, I remain committed to good governance, national unity, and evidence-based and honest public service. I look forward to a future where I can once again contribute directly to the political landscape, aligned with the values I hold dear. “I leave the PDP with immense respect and gratitude and wish the party every success as it continues to reposition itself as a force for positive change in Nigeria. “I conclude with my lifelong mantra: our national aspiration of building a nation where no man is oppressed will be realised sooner rather than later. I remain hopeful of a renascent Nigeria, guided by the spirit of Naija—that shared space where ethnicity and religion do not impede our collective aspirations for a great nation. “Thank you for your understanding and for the support I have received from you and the ward members over the years.” There are, however, speculations that Chidoka may be considering joining the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State. Unconfirmed reports suggest that he is being considered as a potential running mate to Governor Charles Soludo in next year’s governorship election in the state. He is also rumoured to be a likely successor to Soludo in 2029, when power is expected to shift to Anambra Central, his home zone.Changing the narrative about athlete mothers’ comeback storiesThe best women’s snow pants for skiing, sledding and beyond
