As per the present assessment, the total forest and tree cover in the country is 8,27,357 sq km, which is 25.17 per cent of the geographical area of the country. The forest cover has an area of about 7,15,343 sq km (21.76 per cent) whereas the tree cover has an area of 1,12,014 sq km (3.41 per cent), he said. Area wise top three states having the largest forest cover are Madhya Pradesh (77,073 sq km) followed by Arunachal Pradesh (65,882 sq km) and Chhattisgarh (55,812 sq km). The minister also highlighted the near real-time fire alerts and forest fire services provided by FSI using advanced technology while releasing the ‘India State of Forest Report 2023 (ISFR 2023)’ at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. The ISFR is brought out by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) on a biennial basis since 1987. The India State of Forest Report 2023 is the 18th such report in the series. The report said the top four states showing maximum increase in forest and tree cover are Chhattisgarh (684 sq km) followed by Uttar Pradesh (559 sq km), Odisha (559 sq km) and Rajasthan (394 sq km). The top three states showing a maximum increase in forest cover are Mizoram (242 sq km) followed by Gujarat (180 sq km) and Odisha (152 sq km). The total mangrove cover is 4,992 sq km in the country, said the report. The FSI carries out an in-depth assessment of the forest and tree resources of the country based on the interpretation of Remote Sensing satellite data and field-based National Forest Inventory (NFI), and the results are published in the ISFR. The report contains information on forest cover, tree cover, mangrove cover, growing stock, carbon stock in India’s forests, instances of forest fire and agroforestry. To present a detailed picture of forest health at the country level, special thematic information on forest cover and important characteristics of forests have been reported in the ISFR.Not everyone enjoyed Beyoncé’s Christmas Day halftime performance. All eyes were on the superstar, 43, when she hit the field at NRG Stadium in Houston on Wednesday during a break in the NFL game where the home team Texans battled the Baltimore Ravens. Shining in a white bodysuit, chaps and cowboy hat, Beyoncé performed several hits from her “Cowboy Carter” album alongside Post Malone and Shaboozey — but when she made a particular move, viewers at home lost their cool. While wrapping up her set after singing “Texas Hold ‘Em,” the singer was lifted above the field on a platform and made the finger-gun gesture with her left hand. At the same time, a banner reading “BANG” was released under the platform. The National Football League bans the gun gesture, which results in a 15-yard penalty for any offending player, per Daily Mail. The combination infuriated viewers, who unloaded their grievances on social media. “Is the @NFL going to fine @Beyonce for finger guns?!” one angry watcher shared on X (formerly Twitter). “I was thinking the same thing!! How many players were fined for that?” a second X user replied. “Where is the flag on Beyoncé for the finger guns?!?!” posted a third. “Still not sold on Beyoncé as a country artist. Still seems like a pop star that just threw a cowboy hat on. It’s also hilarious that the league has been fining players left and right for finger guns and she’s throwing them around like it’s her job,” added a fourth. The Post has reached out to the NFL for comment. The 32-time Grammy winner is married to Jay-Z, who has thick ties to the football league. The NFL entered into a partnership with his media company Roc Nation in 2019, agreeing that the company would be the league’s “live music entertainment strategist.” It’s also sticking by him in the wake of his scandal. Jay-Z was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl with Sean “Diddy” Combs at an after-party for MTV’s Video Music Awards in 2000. It’s important to note that Jay-Z has not been charged and has denied the allegations, calling them “heinous” and the lawsuit a “blackmail attempt.” His attorney also had some stern words about the growing number of inconsistencies that have surfaced since the lawsuit was filed. While Jay-Z wasn’t at Beyoncé’s nearly 13-minute Christmas Day performance, their oldest child, Blue Ivy, 12, stole the show when she came out and danced alongside her mother. Gus Malzahn is leaving his post as UCF's head coach to reunite with Florida State coach Mike Norvell as the Seminoles' offensive coordinator, ESPN reported on Saturday. Norvell, who served as a graduate assistant under Malzahn at Tulsa in 2007-08, relinquished his role as FSU's primary playcaller amid a staff shakeup this season. Florida State, 1-7 in the Athletic Coast Conference this season, entered Saturday's season finale against Florida at 2-9 and ranked No. 131 in the nation in total offense. UCF also endured a tough 2024 season, going 4-8 after losing eight of its last nine games. During Malzahn's four-year tenure, the Knights went 28-24, including 5-13 in the Big 12 Conference the last two seasons. Malzahn, 59, is 105-62 in 13 seasons as a college head coach, highlighted by a 68-35 mark in eight seasons at Auburn -- which included a BCS title game appearance in 2013. He served as offensive coordinator and playcaller when the Tigers won the national title in 2010. Malzahn will be tasked with revitalizing a Florida State offense that helped produce a 13-1 campaign in 2023, when the Seminoles were denied a spot in the College Football Playoff. Over the last three seasons at UCF, his rushing attack has been in the Top 10 in the nation. In his 19 seasons as a college head coach or offensive coordinator, Malzahn's teams have averaged 447.7 yards per game, and three of his teams eclipsed 7,000 yards in a season. --Field Level Media

Bring up the bodies! Freezing peers fear the cullNew Delhi, Dec 21, 2024 The SpaDeX mission, expected to launch this year aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket, will propel India to the elite club of nations with space docking capabilities, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday. ISRO aims to launch PSLV-C60 on December 30. However, the launch window is open till January 13. The space agency informed that the mission has completed “all tests and clearances”. The integration of the SpaDeX spacecraft is complete, and the spacecraft has been moved to Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It is currently “undergoing preparations for launch”. While only a few countries have aced the space docking technology, it is key for India for its impending space missions including the Moon mission, and setting up the Indian space station. “The launch vehicle has been integrated and now moved to the First Launch Pad, for further integration of satellites and launch preparations,” ISRO said in a post on X. “ISRO’s SpaDeX mission, launching with PSLV-C60, will demonstrate in-space docking using two small spacecraft. This groundbreaking technology is key to future lunar missions, building Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), and more. India aims to join the elite club of nations with space docking capabilities,” it added. The PSLV will lift off two small spacecraft — SDX01, which is the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target — weighing about 220 kg each. The mission will showcase the docking of the two spacecraft in a low-Earth circular orbit. “In-space docking technology is essential when multiple rocket launches are required to achieve common mission objectives. Through this mission, India is marching towards becoming the fourth country in the world to have space docking technology,” ISRO said. It will also demonstrate “the transfer of electric power between the docked spacecraft, which is essential for future applications such as in-space robotics — composite spacecraft control, and payload operations after undocking”. ISRO has also developed indigenous technologies to enable this docking mission. This includes a docking mechanism, a suite of four rendezvous and docking sensors, power transfer technology, indigenous novel autonomous rendezvous and docking strategy, inter-satellite communication link (ISL) for autonomous communication between spacecraft, incorporated with inbuilt intelligence to know the states of the other spacecraft, among others. This mission will be a forerunner for autonomous docking needed for future lunar missions like Chandrayaan-4 without the support of GNSS from Earth, ISRO said.(Agency)World News | Sharjah Department of Culture Organises 9th Kairouan Poetry Festival in TunisiaEmbrace challenges, transform every crisis into opportunity: Piyush Goyal

Mid-American Conference football goes all in on November weeknights for the TV viewersStock market today: Stocks waver in thin trading after US markets reopen following a holiday pause

Stocks drifted higher on Wall Street in midday trading Thursday, as gains in tech companies and retailers helped boost the market. The S&P 500 rose less than 0.1%. The benchmark index is coming off a three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 19 points, or 0.1%, as of 12:32 p.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite was up less than 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened after the Christmas holiday. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.9%, Intel was up 0.7% and Apple gained 0.4%. While tech stocks overall were in the green, some heavyweights were a drag on the market. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.2%. Meta Platforms fell 0.9%, Amazon was down 0.5%, and Netflix gave up 1.4%. Health care stocks also helped lift the market. CVS Health rose 1.9% and Walgreens Boots Alliance rose 3.3% for the biggest gain among S&P 500 stocks. Several retailers also gained ground. Target rose 2.9%, Best Buy was up 2.1% and Dollar Tree gained 2.2%. U.S.-listed shares in Honda and Nissan rose 4.1% and 15.8%, respectively. The Japanese automakers announced earlier this week that the two companies are in talks to combine. Traders got a labor market update. U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week , though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years, the Labor Department reported. Treasury yields rose in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.61% from 4.59% late Tuesday. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Trading was expected to be subdued this week with a thin slate of economic data on the calendar. Still, U.S. markets have historically gotten a boost at year’s end despite lower trading volumes. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the U.S. market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up roughly 26% so far this year and remains near its most recent all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to next week, including updates on pending home sales and home prices, a report on U.S. construction spending and snapshots of manufacturing activity.
