spin genie Brian Travis wasn’t the type of dad you would often hear at his children’s events, but he was the guy you’d always see. Whether he was tracking stats in the back row of the bleachers at a baseball game or dancing on stage in a rockstar outfit for a father-daughter dance, Travis was always there for his family. “He lived for family and his kids,” said Mindy Travis, Brian’s wife. Even in his final days, Brian Travis gave his all. After he died Dec. 5 — 12 days after the 48-year-old Lincoln man went into cardiac arrest — his family donated his organs. The community rallied around the Travis family for the donation as hundreds of people, including teammates, coaches and friends, filled the hospital hallway during an honor walk that same day at Bryan East Campus. “I didn’t know how much impact that he had or we had on people,” Mindy said. Kara Cordell, spokeswoman for Live On Nebraska, said that honor walks occur every time a family undergoes an organ donation. The final tribute includes the donor's caregivers and loved ones lining the hallways of the hospital as the donor is transported to the operating room. "Legacy is important to donor families," Cordell said. "Whether in front of a small group of staff members or with dozens of people present, the significance of the donor's life and their impact on others is recognized and celebrated." Cordell said the walk brings pride and comfort to those saying goodbye to their loved ones, whether it's friends, coworkers or others close to the family. Organ donations aren't common, Cordell said, because donor candidates must be in a hospital and on ventilation prior to the organ donation surgery. In Nebraska, there have been 111 successful organ donation cases this year. Of those, only five have been at Bryan East. Outside of the hospital, hockey sticks were set out by those who knew Travis through the Lincoln Junior Stars, where his son Matthew plays hockey. The online tribute “Sticks out for Brian” was circulated on social media. “You don’t know how many people care or have your back,” Mindy said. “It’s been overwhelming, but I’m grateful because I don’t know how to do this without them.” Mindy and Brian’s relationship was built on support, love and their contrasting personalities, she said. Despite Mindy’s independent nature after losing both her parents at a young age, Brian was steadfast in her life. “I’m pretty strong-willed and hard-headed, and I would push to see if he would break,” Mindy said. “He never would and I could never understand why he stayed with me.” Brian was the parent who read to their three kids each night and could be counted on for helping with any crafts. “He would always make the kids and I homemade Valentine cards,” Mindy said. “He did that when we dated as well. My birthday card was always homemade.” Mindy first met Brian in Columbia, Missouri, while attending college. After he proposed on a bike trail, the two got married and moved to Nebraska in 2003. After 11 years of living in Kearney, the family moved to Lincoln, where they would raise their sports-loving family of five. Brian and Mindy were determined to make it to every event, whether it was track meets, hockey games or dance recitals. He even participated in both their daughters' dance recitals several times. “He would go and learn the steps, and then secretly, he would practice them downstairs,” Mindy said. “He did it because his kids wanted him to do it, and he took pride in their sports.” His love for children wasn’t limited to his own. Mindy said Brian treated other kids as if they were his, offering unwavering support to the families around him. Dave Quevedo and his wife, Joey, met the Travis family nearly 10 years ago as their children grew up playing flag football, baseball and hockey together. Mindy and Joey would run the events together and Brian could often be found chalking lines and helping with warmups. “We were always together at different events because of our boys,” Dave Quevedo said. “Brian was always around.” Brian was the kind of parent to keep track of each player’s stats and which opponents their team would be going up against. He’d sit toward the back with his paper book during the baseball games until the stats were digitized and kept electronically. “He probably actually got to enjoy the games at that point,” Quevedo said. In addition to working in insurance at Continental Western Group, Brian became a pedicab driver in 2018 to supplement the family’s income. He would often donate plasma to ensure they could make ends meet and to provide the best opportunities for his family. For years, Quevedo would watch his best friend work hard to make sure he could always provide the best for his family. “He was that amazing human,” Dave said. “It sucks. Why are the good ones the ones that are dying so young?” On the evening of Nov. 23, Brian was working as a pedicab driver around downtown Lincoln after the Nebraska-Wisconsin volleyball game. It was at about 9:30 p.m. when he collapsed at the Embassy Suites hotel. Bystanders performed CPR and his heart was shocked twice, but he never woke up. Mindy still doesn’t understand what happened to Brian, who seemed healthy and had a very active lifestyle. In the weeks after his death, it’s been difficult for her to come home expecting to see her upbeat husband and not seeing him there. The Quevedos are just a few of their close friends making sure Mindy and her children never feel alone. In November, Joey Quevedo started a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses. “It’s so hard for me to accept help,” Mindy said. “I’m good at giving it, so to receive it is so hard for me because it makes me feel guilty.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!Gastineau confronta a Favre en documental por dejarse caer en captura récordWASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden kicked off his final holiday season at the White House on Monday by issuing the traditional reprieve to two turkeys who will bypass the Thanksgiving table to live out their days in southern Minnesota. Biden welcomed 2,500 guests to the South Lawn under sunny skies as he cracked jokes about the fates of “Peach” and “Blossom” and sounded wistful tones about the last weeks of his presidency after a half-century in Washington power circles. “It’s been the honor of my life. I’m forever grateful,” Biden said, taking note of his impending departure on Jan. 20, 2025. That's when power will transfer to Republican President-elect Donald Trump, the man Biden defeated four years ago and was battling again until he was pressured to bow out of the race amid concerns about his age and viability. Biden is 82. Until Inauguration Day, the president and first lady Jill Biden will continue a busy run of festivities that will double as their long goodbye. The White House schedule in December is replete with holiday parties for various constituencies, from West Wing staff to members of Congress and the White House press corps. Biden relished the brief ceremony with the pardoned turkeys, named for the official flower of the president's home state of Delaware. “The peach pie in my state is one of my favorites,” he said during remarks that were occasionally interrupted by Peach gobbling atop the table to Biden's right. “Peach is making a last-minute plea,” Biden said at one point, drawing laughter from an overflow crowd that included Cabinet members, White House staff and their families, and students from 4H programs and Future Farmers of America chapters. Biden introduced Peach as a bird who “lives by the motto, ‘Keep calm and gobble on.’” Blossom, the president said, has a different motto: “No fowl play. Just Minnesota nice.” Peach and Blossom came from the farm of John Zimmerman, near the southern Minnesota city of Northfield. Zimmerman, who has raised about 4 million turkeys, is president of the National Turkey Federation, the group that has gifted U.S. presidents Thanksgiving turkeys since the Truman administration after World War II. President Harry Truman, however, preferred to eat the birds. Official pardon ceremonies did not become an annual White House tradition until the administration of President George H.W. Bush in 1989. With their presidential reprieve, Peach and Blossom will live out their days at Farmamerica, an agriculture interpretative center near Waseca in southern Minnesota. The center's aim is to promote agriculture and educate future farmers and others about agriculture in America. Separately Monday, first lady Jill Biden received the official White House Christmas tree that will be decorated and put on display in the Blue Room. The 18.5 foot (5.64 meters) Fraser fir came from a farm in an area of western North Carolina that recently was devastated by Hurricane Helene . Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm lost thousands of trees in the storm “but this one remained standing and they named it ‘Tremendous’ for the extraordinary hope that it represents,” Jill Biden said at the event. The Bidens were also traveling to New York City on Monday for an evening “Friendsgiving” event at a Coast Guard station on Staten Island. Biden began his valedictory calendar Friday night with a gala for hundreds of his friends, supporters and staff members who gathered in a pavilion erected on the South Lawn, with a view out to the Lincoln Memorial. Cabinet secretaries, Democratic donors and his longest-serving staff members came together to hear from the president and pay tribute, with no evidence that Biden was effectively forced from the Democratic ticket this summer and watched Vice President Kamala Harris suffer defeat on Nov. 5. “I’m so proud that we’ve done all of this with a deep belief in the core values of America,” said Biden, sporting a tuxedo for the black-tie event. Setting aside his criticisms of Trump as a fundamental threat to democracy, Biden added his characteristic national cheerleading: “I fully believe that America is better positioned to lead the world today than at any point in my 50 years of public service.” The first lady toasted her husband with a nod to his 2020 campaign promise to “restore the soul of the nation,” in Trump’s aftermath. With the results on Election Day, however, Biden’s four years now become sandwiched in the middle of an era dominated by Trump's presence on the national stage and in the White House. Even as the first couple avoided the context surrounding the president's coming exit, those political realities were nonetheless apparent, as younger Democrats like Maryland Gov. Wes Moore , Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Biden's Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg not only raised their glasses to the president but held forth with many attendees who could remain in the party's power circles in the 2028 election cycle and beyond. ___ Associated Press writer Steve Karnowski in Minneapolis contributed to this report.

Former Nebraska head coach Scott Frost has landed his first college job since his time with the Huskers, and it's a familiar location. Frost is set to take over at UCF, the program he coached from 2016-17 before heading to Nebraska, according to multiple reports. 247Sports and The Orlando Sentinel reported the news Saturday. Previous reported indicated that UCF was down to two candidates, Frost and UNLV head coach Barry Odom, in its quest to replace the fired Gus Malzahn. The Knights chose to reunite with Frost over the 48-year-old Odom, who led UNLV to a 10-win season this fall. Frost rebuilt a UCF football program coming off a winless season into a six-win squad, then a 13-0 team during the 2017 season which stands as the best in UCF's program history. Frost had been out of the college game since his firing at Nebraska in September 2022. He compiled a 16-31 record at his alma mater, completing four losing seasons before being fired three games into the 2022 campaign. The former Nebraska head coach's first job since was with the Los Angeles Rams this fall, where he briefly worked as an analyst. Having failed to rebuild at Nebraska, the 49-year-old Frost now returns to the school where he thrived as an up-and-coming offensive coach. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Pro Picks is a weekly column where AP Pro Football Writer Rob Maaddi shares his picks for upcoming games. For all previous Pro Picks, head here . A potential Super Bowl preview and the battle for Pennsylvania bragging rights highlight the NFL’s Week 15 schedule. The NFC-leading Detroit Lions (12-1) put their 11-game winning streak on the line when they host the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills (10-3) on Sunday. Intrastate and interconference rivals meet when the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3) visit the Philadelphia Eagles (11-2). Those two games feature four of the league’s six teams with double-digit wins through 14 weeks. Pro Picks selects a full slate of games as the NFL has completed the bye portion of its schedule for the remainder of the regular season. Line: Chargers minus 3 The banged-up Buccaneers beat three last-place teams in a row to move into first place in the NFC South. They’re going to need to rely on Baker Mayfield and the offense with several injuries to key players on defense. But Mayfield has to protect the ball better. Justin Herbert and the Chargers came close against Kansas City, but lost another game by three points or fewer. Los Angeles is giving up a league-low 15.9 points per game. BEST BET: CHARGERS: 23-17 Line: Lions minus 1 1/2 Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for three scores and the Bills still lost last week, a big blow to their hopes of securing the AFC’s No. 1 seed. The Lions can’t afford to lose because the Vikings and Eagles are right behind them in the race for the NFC’s top spot. Three of Detroit’s past five wins have been by three points. The Lions have a depleted defense that could be exploited by Allen. UPSET SPECIAL: BILLS: 30-27 Line: 49ers minus 2 1/2 The jumbled NFC West is still up for grabs, but the 49ers have no margin for error on Thursday night. With a banged-up backfield, Brock Purdy has stepped up. Now, Deebo Samuel needs to get going. The inconsistent Rams are coming off an impressive win over the Bills. They’re 6-1 straight up in the past seven division games and are 5-2 against the spread in the past seven games this season. The Niners are 4-10 ATS in their past 14 home games. 49ERS: 24-20 Line: Chiefs minus 4 Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs keep winning games in the final minute. They are 0-7 against the spread in the past seven games overall. Kansas City is the superior team, but the Browns have played better than their record. Jameis Winston has made them a formidable opponent. This could be the week the Chiefs don’t have to sweat it out, though. CHIEFS: 24-18 Line: Bengals minus 5 Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are playing great football. It’s too bad they won’t be playing important games in January. The Titans have struggled to score points, but their defense often keeps things close. It helps Tennessee that Cincinnati is coming off a short week after a road win Monday night in Dallas. BENGALS: 24-16 Line: Commanders minus 7 1/2 Jayden Daniels and the offense got back on track before taking a bye. The Commanders are holding onto the final wild-card spot and can’t overlook the Saints with tough games upcoming. The Saints are clinging to slim playoff hopes and Derek Carr is hurt again. COMMANDERS: 23-17 Line: Ravens minus 15 The Ravens are coming off a bye after losing to Philadelphia and Justin Tucker’s kicking is one of the team’s biggest areas of concern. It won’t come down to a field goal against the woeful Giants, who turn back to Tommy DeVito. RAVENS: 33-13 Line: Panthers minus 2 1/2 Bryce Young nearly led the Panthers to an upset of the Eagles if not for a dropped pass. Carolina came close against the Chiefs and Buccaneers, too. Now, they’re favorites against the Cowboys, whose slim playoff hopes took a big hit with a loss to the Bengals. The Panthers look ready to close to the deal. PANTHERS: 22-20 Line: Jets minus 3 1/2 Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are favorites in a matchup of two teams that have failed miserably to live up to high expectations. Mac Jones makes another start for the injured Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars seek their first two-game winning streak of the season. JETS: 23-16 Line: Texans minus 3 Tua Tagovailoa has been outstanding since returning from a concussion and the Dolphins have to keep winning to stay in playoff contention. The Texans are coming off a much-needed bye hoping key players got healthy. Giving the ball to Joe Mixon has helped Houston’s offense get going with the offensive line having issues protecting C.J. Stroud. TEXANS: 24-23 Line: Broncos minus 3 1/2 Bo Nix and the Broncos have a three-game winning streak that’s put them in position to earn a wild-card berth. The Colts need a victory to have any playoff shot. Both teams had an extra week to prepare after a bye. Denver is 6-0 ATS as a favorite this season and an NFL-best 10-3 ATS overall this season. BRONCOS: 24-18 Line: Eagles minus 5 There’s drama in Philly despite nine straight wins. Everything will be fine if Jalen Hurts throws a few more passes to A.J. Brown this week and the passing game steps up. The Steelers are No. 4 against the run so Saquon Barkley’s quest to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record could hit a detour. But Pittsburgh is 17th vs. the pass so there’s an opportunity for Hurts and Brown to get in sync. Russell Wilson is 6-1 since taking over as the starter, but the Steelers have a tough stretch coming against the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs. EAGLES: 22-20 Line: Cardinals minus 6 1/2 A three-game losing streak has knocked the Cardinals out of a playoff position. The lowly Patriots should be a welcome opponent for Kyler Murray and Co. New England has kept it close in several games, going 2-5 in one-score games. CARDINALS: 24-16 Line: Packers minus 3 The streaky Seahawks have won four straight to take over first place in the NFC West after losing four of five. Zach Charbonnet had a career game last week to balance an offense that relies on Geno Smith’s arm. The good news for the Packers is they’re playing a non-division opponent. Green Bay is 1-3 against the NFC North and 8-1 vs. everyone else. This could be a potential playoff preview because the Packers are going to go the wild-card route. PACKERS: 27-20 Line: Vikings minus 6 1/2 Sam Darnold is having an excellent season and the Vikings have won six in a row to stay hot on Detroit’s trail in the NFC North and for the No. 1 seed. The Bears fired their coach after three losses by a field goal or less. Then they were blown out at home by the 49ers and are 0-6 on the road. VIKINGS: 26-16 Line: Falcons minus 4 1/2 Kirk Cousins is struggling and the Falcons have lost four in a row to fall behind the Buccaneers in the NFC South. But the schedule gets easier with three of the final four games against teams that are 7-22. The Raiders should be playing for the No. 1 pick in the draft. FALCONS: 26-19 Last week: Straight up: 9-4. Against spread: 6-6-1. Overall: Straight up: 143-75. Against spread: 111-94-3. Prime-time: Straight up: 34-12. Against spread: 24-21-1. Best Bet: Straight up: 9-5. Against spread: 8-6. Upset Special: Straight up: 7-7. Against spread: 7-7. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

The pope is kicking off a yearlong Jubilee that will test his stamina and Rome's patience VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis on Tuesday opens the 2025 Holy Year. It kicks off a celebration of the Catholic Church that is expected to draw some 32 million pilgrims to Rome. That will test the pope’s stamina and the ability of the Eternal City to welcome them. At the start of Christmas Eve Mass, Francis pushes open the great Holy Door at the entrance of St. Peter’s Basilica. The ceremony inaugurates the once-every-25-year tradition of a Jubilee, in which the Catholic faithful make pilgrimages to Rome. Francis has dedicated the 2025 Jubilee to the theme of hope. Traditionally used to describe reserved or modest individuals, demure has taken on an expanded meaning this year to signify refined and sophisticated appearances or behaviors. "As remote work fades and in-person experiences become the norm again, the subtle art of personal presentation has taken on renewed importance," said Steve Johnson , Curriculum Design Manager of the Dictionary Media Group at IXL Learning . " Demure captures this cultural shift with a modern twist: a word that once carried traditional, often limiting connotations has been reimagined to celebrate understated elegance and suavity. Its evolving meaning gives people a way to express quiet confidence—embracing modesty and charm as intentional, empowering choices . " In making the annual selection, Dictionary.com 's lexicographers analyzed a wealth of data—including newsworthy headlines, search engine results and social media trends—to identify words that captured pivotal moments in 2024. The word demure dominated the cultural zeitgeist, with its usage in digital media surging a remarkable 1,200% between January and August. This meteoric rise is largely attributed to Jools Lebron, a content creator who popularized the phrase "very demure, very mindful" in a series of TikTok videos illustrating how to embody the term in professional, travel and social settings. The social media buzz surrounding demure sparked a similar spike in search interest. In the 11 months before Lebron's videos, there was no notable trend in Google searches for the term, but interest surged 14-fold by August 2024 . At its peak, searches for demure on Dictionary.com were 200 times greater than their previous rate. While the initial trend has cooled, the word remains five times more popular on Dictionary.com than it was before its breakout moment. Alongside demure, Dictionary.com 's lexicographers identified five additional words that shaped the cultural conversation in 2024, rounding out this year's shortlist.
