AP Sports SummaryBrief at 7:27 a.m. ESTQatar tribune Agencies Turke has introduced incentives and regulations to achieve a storage target of 80 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030, while the energy sector’s agreements to establish cell and battery factories have exceeded $1 billion (TL 35 billion) this year, according to a head of a local association involved in the battery sector on Monday. Energy storage systems, emerging as new players in installed capacity, and the accompanying battery sector are attracting increasing investments and interest globally. Currently, Turke hosts two cell production facilities and nearly 100 lithium-ion battery production facilities of various scales that are actively operating. Aiming to establish 80 gigawatt-hours of capacity by 2030, the country aspires to become a regional hub for production and investment in battery technologies. In July, the government announced the “HIT-30” investment program, which offers comprehensive support and incentives for special projects in high-priority technology areas and develops tailored solutions to specific needs. Following the program’s announcement, the battery sector experienced significant momentum, with domestic and international companies signing new agreements. Kadem Usta, president of the Association of Battery Manufacturers and Suppliers (PILDER), evaluated the recent developments in the battery sector over the year in an interview with Anadolu Agency (AA). Usta stated that 2024 witnessed critical advancements, both in the global and Turkish battery sectors. “Globally, steps to integrate renewable energy sources and recycling have come to the forefront, while in Turke, HIT-30 incentives and investment projects have been the main drivers supporting the sector,” Usta said. “Within the scope of the HIT-30 incentives, significant support for battery production and energy storage systems has been announced. These incentives have accelerated investments in the sector,” he added. Moreover, he highlighted that six agreements signed this year between domestic and foreign firms would establish new factories with cell and battery production capacities of up to 5 gigawatt-hours in cities such as Ankara, Kocaeli, Istanbul and Izmir. “The agreements signed this year have exceeded $1 billion in value. With six new investments nationwide, the total number of battery production facilities will increase to 11,” he said. Pointing out that the legal infrastructure for the operation of battery and energy storage power plants has not yet fully taken shape, Usta noted that a draft regulation has been published, but the first approvals are expected in 2025. Kurtis Rourke has made the Jon Cornish Trophy a family affair. The Indiana quarterback received the award Monday, which is presented annually to the top Canadian playing football in the NCAA. Rourke’s older brother, Nathan, currently with the CFL’s B.C. Lions, won the award twice in 2017 and 2018 at Ohio. “It’s awesome,” Rourke said. “Kind of getting introduced to the Jon Cornish Trophy back when Nathan won it a couple of times, I wanted to be able to have a shot and it was one of my goals to be in the conversation, be in the running. “It just means a ton to be recognized just because Canadian athletes don’t get recognized too often. I’m just so glad we’re able to get that recognition and continue to do it for our country.” Rourke finished first in voting ahead of Montreal’s Dariel Djabome, a junior linebacker at Rutgers. Stanford receiver Elic Ayomanor, last year’s winner, was third, followed by Vancouver’s Ty Benefield (sophomore safety, Boise State) and Jett Elad of Mississauga, Ont., a senior safety at UNLV. Cornish, of New Westminster, B.C., was a standout running back at Kansas who went on to have a decorated CFL career with the Calgary Stampeders (2007-15) before being inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2019. Rourke transferred to Indiana last December to boost his NFL draft stock after five years at Ohio, where he began as a backup to his older brother. The junior Rourke then captured the ‘22 MAC offensive player of the year award despite suffering a season-ending knee injury before heading to Indiana after the 2023 season. Rourke was instrumental in Indiana — traditionally known as a basketball school — emerging as a Big Ten contender in head coach Curt Cignetti’s first season. After winning 11 of their first 12 games, the Hoosiers’ stellar campaign ended with a 27-17 loss to Notre Dame in the opening game of the expanded U.S. college football playoff bracket. Rourke finished 20-of-33 passing for 215 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in that contest. Overall, Rourke completed 222 of 320 passes (69.4 per cent) for 3,042 yards with 29 TDs and five interceptions. “What a privilege, opportunity to come join a program that had so much to prove,” Rourke said. “It kind of aligned with what I was wanting to do, which was prove I could play at a higher level.” The six-foot-five, 223-pound Rourke was named a finalist for the Manning Award, presented annually to the NCAA’s top quarterback. He was also ninth in voting for the Heisman Trophy as U.S. college football’s outstanding player. “College football has been everything to me,” Rourke said. “Starting off my freshman year to be able to watch Nathan grow and play in his senior year and just learn from him in both how to live a college life but also be a college quarterback as well. “I won’t forget my time at Ohio at all, it really created me and moulded me into the person, player I am. I’m extremely grateful for the entire college football experience.” The former Holy Trinity star becomes just the second Canadian high school graduate to claim the Jon Cornish Trophy. Chuba Hubbard, of Sherwood Park, Alta., and currently with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, did so in 2019 while at Oklahoma State. The six-foot-two, 240-pound Djabome recorded 102 tackles (48 solo), three sacks and two forced fumbles this season. Rutgers faces Kansas State in the Rate Bowl on Boxing Day. The six-foot-two, 210-pound Ayomanor, a redshirt junior, was one of the few bright spots this season for Stanford (3-9). He registered 63 catches for 831 yards and six TDs after recording 62 receptions for 1,013 yards and six touchdowns in 2023. Last week, Ayomanor declared for the ‘25 NFL draft. The six-foot-two, 204-pound Benefield led Boise State in tackles (73), solo tackles (53) and interceptions (two) while also registering five tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and two recoveries. The Broncos are the third seed in U.S. college football’s expanded playoffs and face Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31. Elad registered 55 tackles, an interception and six pass knockdowns during the regular season. He added 12 tackles (nine solo) and a sack in the Runnin’ Rebels’ 24-13 win over Cal in the Art of Sport LA Bowl to finish with an 11-3 overall record.A BC Ferries passenger on board the Queen of Alberni Nov. 2, reported that the ship hit a whale, but that’s yet to be confirmed. The ship was travelling between Duke Point, in Nanaimo, and Tswawassen, when the passenger said they saw the collision. However, none of the crew saw or felt anything, said Sheila Reynolds, with BC Ferries. “Our crew quickly followed protocols to prevent possible harm and immediately reported the incident to our operations centre, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, local researchers and the Tsawwassen and Snuneymuxw First Nations,” she added. No animals were located or identified. And so far, researchers have been unable to locate or identify any injured animals. “It is our information that the report involved a single animal, and that Fisheries and Oceans (Canada) continues to investigate,” Reynolds said. According to BC Ferries there have been six suspected or confirmed marine mammal strikes in the last three years. Reynolds added that BC Ferries is concerned about the incident and takes all such reports seriously. The company has a policy for operating vessels in the presence of marine mammals and has been part of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network for 45 years. Crews on the bridge also have to take a mandatory tutorial. Tsawwassen First Nation said online it was “deeply saddened,” to hear about the suspected incident. Callum Robinson, communications and engagement manager with TFN, said Wednesday it’s the third time this year that they know of. “So it’s kind of an alarming trend,” he said. The area is traditional hunting territory for the Tsawwassen people and it’s just not great to have a whale hit, whether it was unharmed, injured or killed, he added. He wants BC Ferries to improve its standards and pointed out the aging fleet is 50 to 60 years old. “But really, what we’re trying to do is encourage BC Ferries ... to implement best practices that are environmentally friendly ... and just generally protect the waters that reside in the traditional territory of the Tsawwassen people,” he said. “With several whale populations already in decline, any event that further endangers these species is of great concern to us,” the nation said on its website. “Whales, in particular, hold tremendous cultural significance to Tsawwassen First Nation and other Indigenous communities in the region.” TFN wants to have a more open relationship with BC Ferries and wants to work collaboratively on solutions, Robinson added. Tsawwassen First Nation also encouraged BC Ferries to expand its pilot program using thermal technology for detecting whales. However, there are no plans to do that, said Reynolds. BC Ferries is facing financial pressure from rising operating costs and inflation and is focused on the “critical need” to update its fleet. BC Ferries' new ships will be quieter, which will help the southern resident killer whale population, she noted.
No. 5 UCLA snaps No. 1 South Carolina's 43-game win streakBy Elizabeth Ayoola, NerdWallet The investing information provided on this page is for educational purposes only. Kids are often pretty good at being consumers. If you’re a parent with a small business, you have the opportunity to show your kids firsthand what it means to be a producer. Small Business Saturday, which takes place on Nov. 30 this year, may be a great time to do just that. Small Business Saturday was established by American Express in 2010 and encourages consumers to patronize their local stores as a way to keep dollars circulating within their community. Here are three reasons you should consider getting your kids involved in Small Business Saturday, according to two mompreneurs. Ronne Brown is the owner of HERLISTIC, a plant-derived beauty and feminine care brand in Washington, D.C. She’s been participating in Small Business Saturday since she established her business in 2020. The entrepreneur gets her kids (ages 24, 18 and 12), plus her bonus daughter, 10, to help out on Small Business Saturday and beyond. Brown’s kids help with customer service, shipping and fulfillment tasks. That could include counting inventory, quality control or packaging boxes. Other times, help looks like Brown’s 12-year-old daughter keeping her up-to-date with TikTok trends and influencers in the beauty field. “I just want them to understand the price and the value of a dollar and what it actually costs to make it,” Brown says. The mompreneur also hopes her kids learn the benefits of commitment and hard work. “What I want to show them is that you have to work hard every day. And there are gonna be moments where you’re gonna be tired, you’re gonna be exhausted, and you’re not gonna want to do things, and you’re going to have to push through,” she says. Hiring your kids to do legitimate work during Small Business Saturday provides a chance for them to learn pillars needed for a strong financial foundation: earning money , saving money and investing. That said, before hiring kids, it’s critical to understand the child labor laws for your state in addition to the IRS’ rules around hiring kids. Brown says she pays all of her children, including her 24-year-old son who is on payroll. Additionally, she teaches them about investing in the stock market. “I want them to understand the importance of making money, but also investing the money that they’re making,” she says. “Because when I pay them, I always ask them, ‘so what are you gonna do to double this money?’” If you hire your minor kids, they could get a headstart on investing by putting some of their income into a custodial Roth IRA , which requires earned income to open. You could also open them a custodial brokerage account. Another perk of your kids earning income by working for you is that they may be exempt from paying federal income taxes if they earn less than the standard deduction . In 2024, that threshold is $14,600. Having your kids add helping hands, whether it be doing administrative tasks or helping customers, can ensure you keep up with a potential increase in sales. A 2024 NerdWallet holiday spending report found that 16% of 2024 holiday shoppers plan to shop on Small Business Saturday this year. Lisset Tresvant, owner of Glow Esthetics Spa in Hollywood, Florida, has been participating in Small Business Saturday since the genesis of her business in 2019. “I do tend to sell more because people are usually more inclined to purchase because of the sales, and it gives them a reason to support us,” she says. To help with the demand, Tresvant’s daughter, 12, and son, 9, fill her skincare products, add labels and help prep items for shipping. Tresvant says she decided to let her kids get involved in her business so they have a better understanding of what she does. Looking beyond Small Business Saturday, hiring your child can also help with succession planning , which is about planning for your departure from your business. Tresvant hopes to pass hers down to her kids one day. “They understand that I’m building this legacy just for not myself, but for them as well,” says Tresvant. No sooner had Storm Bert dwindled before Storm Conall began brewing. Storm Conall, which has been named by the Dutch Met Service, is tracking close to Irish shores, bringing with it a "deepening low pressure" system. While the storm is not expected to directly impact Ireland, its effects are already being felt across the UK and the Netherlands. A Met Office spokesperson said: "Storm Conall has been named by the Dutch Weather Service, @KNMI . This area of low pressure brings rain to southern Britain Tuesday night, and deepens further after crossing the UK to bring strong winds across the Netherlands later on Wednesday and into Thursday." Read more: What cost of living benefits will be paid and what bills are going up in December Read more: Social welfare Ireland: Date for cost-of-living Christmas bonus and who will get it Luckily, the storm has already passed south of Ireland and brought heavy rainfall to the UK overnight. At the moment it's continuing its journey eastward and is expected to bring strong and potentially disruptive winds to the Netherlands today and tomorrow. But in quite a curveball, instead of causing the usual stormy weather, Storm Conall will bring an unexpected rise in temperatures for Ireland. As the low-pressure system deepens, it is expected to create conditions that pull in milder air from the southwest and the Atlantic Ocean. Check out the full forecast below: Thursday: Thursday morning, there will be some hazy sunshine in the north and east with any remaining frost and fog here clearing quickly, but it will be a cloudy and damp start in the south and west with outbreaks of rain. Rain and drizzle will spread across most of the country through the afternoon but rainfall totals will be small in the east and northeast. Highest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees in fresh or strong and gusty southeast winds, reaching near gale or gale along coasts. Thursday night: Breezy on Thursday night with outbreaks of rain and drizzle across the western half of the country with some heavy falls. It looks set to stay largely dry further east apart from the odd spot of rain or drizzle. A mild night with lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in fresh and gusty southerly winds. Friday: It looks set to be a cloudy and rather damp day on Friday with outbreaks of rain pushing northwards over the country. A clearance to scattered showers will follow from the Atlantic to southern and western counties during the evening. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in fresh and gusty southerly winds. Mostly cloudy on Friday night with a few patches of rain, drizzle and mist but overall plenty of dry weather. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds. Saturday: Breezy on Saturday with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. More persistent rain will develop in Atlantic coastal counties during Saturday afternoon. A mild day with highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees in fresh and gusty southerly winds. Further outbreaks of rain on Saturday night, turning heavy in places with the chance of spot flooding. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate southwest winds.
