President-elect Donald Trump will return to Washington, D.C ., soon, and a handful of powerful people who are still there because the former president put them in their positions don't plan on leaving. Three notable federal government agents are not planning on leaving their posts: Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell , FBI Director Christopher Wray , and TSA Administrator David Pekoske. All three men were Trump appointees with some being reconfirmed under President Joe Biden ’s administration. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell Powell is perhaps the most notably defiant of the bunch. When asked by reporters recently if he would step down if Trump requested it, Powell responded with a one-word answer: "No." Powell also said his removal would be "not permitted under the law," when asked whether he thinks the president has the legal authority to intervene in the Fed by either firing or demoting him. Trump has aired grievances about the Fed's decision-making during his first administration and has expressed that discontent while campaigning. He has accused Powell of being too political and has said he wishes for the executive branch to have more power over the Fed. BIDEN TO USE LAME-DUCK SESSION TO ‘TRUMP-PROOF’ LEGACY "I feel the president should have at least a say in there. Yeah, I feel that strongly," Trump said in an Aug. 8 press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. "I think that, in my case, I made a lot of money, I was very successful, and I think I have a better instinct than, in many cases, people that would be on the Federal Reserve or the chairman." In 2017, Trump nominated Powell to lead the Fed and he was confirmed by the Senate with an 84–13 vote. He was re-nominated by Biden and confirmed by the Senate in November 2021. His term as Fed chair ends May 15, 2026. FBI Director Christopher Wray Following Trump dismissing former FBI Director James Comey, Trump nominated Christopher Wray to take over his post. He was confirmed by the Senate in a 92–5 vote. Wray is set to remain in the post through 2027 as it is a 10-year term, but Vice President-elect J.D. Vance this week posted on social media that he and Trump were together to “interview multiple positions for our government, including for FBI Director.” Vance later deleted the post, as some speculated it indicated that Trump's upcoming administration was looking to dismiss Wray. Wray, like Comey, can be removed by the president if he so wishes, regardless of term length. Comey was dismissed four years into his term. DEMOCRATS WEIGH CHANGE IN STRATEGY TO AVOID MIDTERM AND 2028 DEFEATS Both Wray and Trump's team are planning for the possibility that Wray will be replaced in the upcoming administration, according to NBC News. Wray suggested in an interview last spring that he’d like to stay in his job if Trump wins, as long as the FBI can maintain its longstanding standards not to bring politics into its investigations. “As long as I think I can continue doing that in a way that adheres to all those rules and norms, it’s what I’d like to keep doing,” he told the outlet. Trump and his allies have floated options for who would replace Wray should he be dismissed or if he leaves. Kash Patel and former Rep. Mike Rogers’s names have gained traction. Patel is the preferred candidate of the MAGA faction of the Republican Party as he has proposed sweeping reforms for the country’s top domestic intelligence agency. Rogers, a Michigan Republican and former FBI special agent, once served as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and is seen as having a more centrist approach. TSA administrator David Pekoske In 2017, Trump nominated Pekoske to the role of TSA administrator and he was confirmed in the Senate by a 77-18 vote. In 2022, Pekoske was confirmed again by the Senate to a second five-year term in the role. Pekoske’s current term would then be up in 2027. Pekoske recently made clear that he is hoping to stay until his term ends in 2027. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER "It’s important for continuity in TSA to run the second term to its conclusion,” he said, adding that he “loves” the role. Pekoske leads a workforce of around 60,000 employees at nearly 430 airports nationwide.GREELEY, Colo. , Dec. 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- ALLO Fiber is pleased to announce its fiber broadband network build of the City of Boulder, CO. No. 12 Boise State (9-1, 6-0 Mountain West, No. 12 CFP) at Wyoming (2-8, 2-4,) Saturday, 7 p.m. ET (CBSSN) BetMGM College Football Odds: Boise State by 22 1/2. Series record: Boise State leads 17-1. Boise State enters its final conference game of the season with an eight-game winning streak - its longest single-season winning streak since 2014 - and with its sights set on a potential top-four seed in the College Football Playoff. With Boise State in front of BYU, the Broncos became the provisional No. 4 seed in the playoff with two weeks left in the regular season. Despite being mired in a two-win season, Wyoming would love to play the spoiler role against the Broncos. Wyoming’s rushing defense against Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty. The junior running back comes into this one leading the nation in several categories, including rushing yards (1,893), rushing touchdowns (26), total touchdowns (27) and all-purpose yards (1,991). The Cowboys rank 116th in the nation in allowing 201.2 yards rushing per game. Boise State: WR Cameron Camper continues to play a pivotal role for the Broncos. As Jeanty draws the attention of opposing defensive units, it creates space in the secondary for Camper to operate. The senior leads the Broncos with 665 yards receiving with 40 catches, including four touchdowns. Wyoming: DE DeVonne Harris has proven to be effective for the Cowboys since missing time earlier this season with an injury. Harris registered a season-high six tackles with a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery at Colorado State and has three tackles for loss this season. Harris could be tasked to slow Jeanty in the running lanes while also applying pressure to Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen. Attorney General Austin Knudsen won’t be facing a contempt order from court in a wrongful discharge lawsuit. A former Montana Highway Patrol chief who is suing Knudsen and the state argued that the attorney general should be found in contempt for allowing the Department of Justice to disseminate confidential personnel information — an allegation the DOJ denied. A district court judge denied the motion to set a contempt hearing last month. Lawyers for the state called the motion “unorthodox” and “a red herring.” In the lawsuit, former Highway Patrol Col. Steve Lavin alleged he was wrongfully terminated after he launched a management review and workplace climate survey. As part of that lawsuit, lawyers for Lavin alleged the DOJ shared private information about Lavin with political consultant Jake Eaton and The Political Company, and Eaton more widely released it in an email to clients. The Political Company provided fundraising consulting to Knudsen, a Republican re-elected as attorney general in November. In the email, Eaton criticized Lavin as “an inept leader” albeit “super nice guy.” The court filing from Lavin’s lawyers didn’t specify which part of the email it considered private personnel information. Eaton is not party to the lawsuit, but he earlier told the Daily Montana the criticisms in his email came from social media and gossip circles, not the DOJ. In its response to the motion, Brown Law Firm lawyers representing Knudsen argued the state shouldn’t have to argue for Eaton, a third party, who acted as a private individual “with no official judicial or ministerial duties.” Regardless, they also said Eaton’s explanation to the Daily Montanan that his sources did not include the DOJ make the contempt motion moot. Plus, they said, the timing didn’t add up for such a motion. They said the lawsuit was still “in its infancy,” their deadline to answer hadn’t even passed before the contempt motion came up, and it could “only be classified as a poorly masked attempt to force defendants to appear prior to their statutorily prescribed deadline.” The lawyers argued that when contempt isn’t committed in open court or within the purview of the presiding judge, an affidavit outlining the facts constituting contempt needs to be presented, and one was not. So they said the judge should deny the motion. In the order last month, Lewis and Clark County District Court Judge Michael McMahon agreed with the state’s argument about the need for an affidavit outlining “a statement of the facts.” The order denied the plaintiff’s request that the court set a hearing “to allow defendants to answer why they should not be held indirect civil contempt.” The order said the contempt motion was not supported by an affidavit, required when contempt is alleged outside the view of the court. It also said the Montana Supreme Court had found procedures must be followed in such cases. In a phone call, lawyer Ben Reed, representing Lavin, said the team’s interest in raising concerns about the email was to ensure the dispute remained focused on the allegations of wrongful termination — and stayed between the parties in the case without interference from outsiders. “We simply wanted to bring these issues to the attention of the court and make it clear that the case is about what’s in front of the court, and not about what’s not (in front of the court), and to try and keep third parties from joining into the chorus,” Reed said. Reed, of the Delli Bovi, Martin and Reed firm, also said the plaintiffs will carry on with the lawsuit. “We’re confident that we can move on in good order and according to the rule of law,” Reed said. Spokespeople from the DOJ did not respond to requests for comment. In response to the allegations in the lawsuit, the DOJ earlier said Lavin agreed to retire after the Highway Patrol “lost confidence” in him. In their court filing about the motion for contempt, they said the lawsuit is only about employment. “Defendants view this as an employment matter — one where the plaintiff signed a release as part of a negotiated severance agreement, which is a complete defense to plaintiff’s claims in this matter,” said the lawyers for Knudsen. “Plaintiff is merely trying to distract from that fact with a red herring motion.” Get any of our free daily email newsletters — news headlines, opinion, e-edition, obituaries and more.By KELVIN CHAN, Business Writer LONDON (AP) — Looking for a new social media platform because X, Threads and Mastodon just aren’t cutting it? You could try Bluesky . People seeking to avoid chaos, noise and political bluster in the aftermath of the U.S. elections are noticing a different mood on the Bluesky social platform, where the vibe is seemingly welcoming and there are noticeably fewer trolls. The site announced it had rapidly added more than a million new users in the week after Election Day, and has emerged as one of the fastest growing rivals to Elon Musk’s X and similar platforms. If you’re tempted to check out the new space, here’s a guide on how Bluesky works: Maybe you’re not ready to commit to adding yet another social media account. No problem — you can still look around on Bluesky without signing up because all posts and profiles are public. You might get a sense of deja vu because the platform’s look and feel are very similar to X. That should be no surprise because Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was an early Bluesky champion. (Dorsey’s no longer involved with Bluesky, which is owned and run by its executive team as a public benefit corporation.) If you take the plunge and get an account, you’ll need a username. You’ll notice Bluesky handles are a little bit different because they end by default in the site’s domain, .bsky.social. You can personalize your handle to make it more memorable, by using your own website’s domain or buying a custom one through Bluesky. But it might not be something most newbie users need or want to do right away. Bluesky boasts that it gives users “algorithmic choice” to tailor the content they’re shown instead of leaving it up to the whims of a centralized system. “Our online experience doesn’t have to depend on billionaires unilaterally making decisions over what we see,” it says . Related Articles What it means is that you can follow custom feeds set up by other users, or design your own. If you tap #Feeds in the menu on the left, you’ll see some default offerings like Cat Pics and Gardening. My Bangers is a list of your most popular posts by likes and Catch Up shows the site’s most popular posts from the past 24 hours. You can find more by doing a search and tapping the Feeds button. There’s also the usual “Discover” feed of suggested posts and a chronological feed of accounts that you follow. To help new users settle in, Bluesky has starter packs of recommended feeds and accounts to follow, which anyone can create and share. They don’t show up in Bluesky’s search results but can be found in directories online . Or someone might share one with you. After I signed up, a colleague pointed me to one for major news outlets . There are tens of thousands of starter packs, ranging from broadly appealing topics like Taylor Swift to niche interests like cargo bikes or U.K. comedians . You can follow the whole pack or scroll down the list to choose individual accounts. What about people you followed on X? There’s a browser extension tool called Sky Follower Bridge that will help you find X users who’ve migrated to Bluesky. But check before clicking the follow button to make sure it’s not a different user using the same display name or handle. Ready to join the conversation? You can write posts or reply to others but keep it short because there’s a limit of 300 characters — 20 more than on X. You can also upload photos and videos, though videos can’t be longer than 60 seconds. GIFs and emojis are, of course, available too. You can still @ people by typing in their username, like posts by tapping a heart icon or use hashtags to highlight a theme. Bluesky has added a menu to hashtags, so when you click on one you’ll get different options for seeing, or muting, posts on that topic. Bluesky’s decentralization ethos extends to the content control options it offers. For starters, users can choose in their settings menu whether to see replies, reposts or quote posts in their feed. Specific words or tags can be muted temporarily, or forever, while accounts can be muted or blocked individually, or in bulk by adding them a moderation list. You can even fine tune the level of adult content that shows up in your feed. Bluesky has a team of content moderators to police the site for material that’s illegal or breaks the rules. But it’s also taking a different approach by open sourcing its content moderation system in an attempt to resolve problems with traditional moderation services which it says “lack transparency and user control.” So, individuals or groups can set up their own content filters, or labelers, that go beyond what Bluesky offers. These labelers can be used to categorize content or users, which can then be blocked or hidden. But they could also be used for informational or creative purposes, like curating or verifying content. There are labelers to identify images generated by artificial intelligence or to fact check news posts. You can find lists of labelers online. After I subscribed to a U.S. politics labeler, some posts in my feeds were flagged “!Donald Trump” or “!Democrat politician” and hidden unless I click Show.
