Technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalise the country’s stagnant economy. Mr Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag – a sister publication of Politico owned by the Axel Springer Group – published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month that he has supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” he wrote in his translated commentary. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announces the decision to dissolve the Bundestag and schedule a new election for February 23 (Ebrahim Noroozi/AP) The Tesla Motors chief executive also wrote that his investment in Germany gives him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. Billionaire Mr Musk, an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Technology billionaire Elon Musk is an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump (Brandon Bell/Pool/AP) Eva Marie Kogel wrote: “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print.” A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Mr Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” he wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Mr Burgard – who is due to take over on January 1 – said in a joint statement that the discussion over Mr Musk’s piece was “very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the ‘world’ in the future. We will develop ‘Die Welt’ even more decisively as a forum for such debates,” they wrote to dpa.Topline The majority of Americans approve of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition, and large shares are in favor of some of his most controversial nominees, according to a new CBS/YouGov poll released as Trump has largely completed the process of nominating his top Cabinet picks. Key Facts Tangent The majority of respondents approve of both Trump’s plans for mass deportations (57%) and his plan to impose broad tariffs on U.S. imports (52%), the poll found. Most Trump voters also don’t believe the tariffs will make prices higher—contradicting predictions from most experts—and the third that do think tariffs will lead to higher prices support them anyway. Trump has proposed raising tariffs by 10% on all imported goods and by 60% on goods imported from China. Economists largely believe Trump’s tariffs proposals would lead to an increase in the price of consumer goods and hurt the economy by leading to less spending, increased unemployment and slowed economic growth. Key Background Trump quickly nominated his picks to lead most government agencies, largely completing the process Saturday with the announcement of Brooke Rollins for agriculture secretary and tapping hedge fund executive Scott Bessent for treasury secretary on Friday. Gaetz abruptly took himself out of the running for attorney general on Thursday, writing in a statement that he believed he was creating a distraction for the incoming administration as multiple Republican senators openly questioned his chances of being approved in a Senate confirmation hearing. Gaetz resigned from Congress hours after Trump appointed him and days before the House Ethics Committee was expected to vote to release a report on its investigation into Gaetz’s conduct. Hours after Gaetz announced he wouldn’t pursue the role, Trump announced former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his pick to lead the Justice Department. Bondi served as Florida AG from 2011 to 2019 and was part of Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. Tommy DeVito had a first hand experience of what Daniel Jones went through as the Giants quarterback before being released by New York earlier in the week. DeVito was tabbed the starter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in his first start of the 2024 NFL season , the 26-year-old completed 21-of-31 passes for 189 yards with no touchdowns in what was a laugher by the end of the third quarter. The Giants did not score until the fourth quarter, thanks to a Devin Singletary rush early in that period. With the Buccaneers defense keeping DeVito in check throughout most of the game, Tampa Bay also gave New York's new starter a wake up call. During the first quarter, the Buccaneers defense rushed the Giants offensive line hard. Daniel Jones free agency preference emerges after being cut by New York Giants Baker Mayfield adds to Giants embarrassment with ruthless Tommy DeVito celebration In doing so, New York's line collapsed with ease, leaving DeVito open after the snap. Tampa Bay's Christian Izien immediately honed in on DeVito as the quarterback surveyed the field to see who he could throw it to before Izien could intercept the pass, or worse. While DeVito evaded Izien, his move put him directly in the path of Buccaneers defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, who immediately sacked the 26-year-old with force. Many on social media have called Kancey's hit to be the hardest sack of the season and considering how forcefully the 23-year-old slammed into DeVito, it stands to reason why many feel that way. To add insult to injury, Buccaneers quarterback elected to rub salt into the wound of Giants fans tuning in to watch how DeVito fared in the 30-7 loss. As time ran out in the second quarter, Mayfield vaulted himself into the end zone despite being met by resistance. While celebrating, M ayfield stole DeVito's celebration , pumping his hands up and down aggressively with his fingers pinched, similar to how the 26-year-old celebrated. Of note, DeVito's celebration paid homage to his Italian roots. After the game, Giants head coach Brian Daboll spoke with reporters about the hits DeVito and Jones received throughout this season and how New York could address those, especially since the offensive line tends to break down rather easily. "Yeah, we'll see why there were," he began. "The hits were the hits. We'll take a look at that and try to correct what we can." Additionally, DeVito shared what was going through his mind as he got the hit and his first start of the season under his belt. "First time being out there in a while, playing real football again since preseason so probably going to take some time to get adjusted a little bit to getting hit again but I'll be OK," he told reporters after the loss . For the Giants, it remains to be seen where the organization goes after releasing Jones . Jones formally requested his release after he was demoted from starter to being the No. 4 quarterback on the depth chart, which included seeing his role changed to scout-team safety. Giants owner John Mara explained how he appreciated Jones' approach to the situation, calling him a "first class" player. "We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future," Mara said in a statement . The Giants will hope to get their play back on track against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving in a quick turnaround. Want to watch more live sports? The ITV quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire ?, fronted by host Jeremy Clarkson, saw one of its celebrity guests struggle and use up not one but two lifelines in the first five minutes of the hot seat. The ITV celebrity special featured Jools Holland , Nina Wadia and Ugo Mony in the hot seat aiming to earn money for charities and climb the money leaderboard. However music guru Jools Holland struggled to reach the £1,000 mark, calling in his 'ask the audience' and 'phone a friend' lifelines for his fourth and fifth questions. For his fourth question, which would earn him £500, Jools was asked "In March 2020, who began hosting online fitness workouts for children under the title 'P.E. with Joe'?" Turning to the audience, they overwhelming replied that it was sports guru Joe Wicks rather than any of the other Joe choices, including former US president Joe Biden. Jools' next question asked him to draw on his film knowledge, when he was asked "Which of these is a tagline for the Hitchcock film 'Psycho'?" Calling a friend, Jools was pushed towards the right answer of "Check in. Unpack. Relax. Take a shower.", which hints at the infamous shower scene from the classic movie. Whilst Jools had used up two of his three lifelines in the first five questions, his cries for help had not gone unnoticed by viewers at home. Taking to social media, one stunned viewer wrote on X: "He used two lifelines at that in the first five questions! Bloody hell. Even Joey bloody Essex knows more than Jools Holland!" Another posted: "What the heck? Jools Holland used Phone A Friend on the Psycho question? JOOLS HOLLAND?!? I thought he was clever!" "I genuinely thought Jools Holland would be much better than this," added a third. Another posted: "Wow. It’s a good job Jools can play the piano well because he’s bloody useless at this...." "Oh Jools I thought you would do better, but I guess you either know it or you don’t," shared another. With another question asking Jools to draw on his music knowledge, he was quizzed about The Spice Girls. He dithered, as one viewer pointed out on social media: " Jools Holland getting a Spice Girls question when he appeared in the movie Spiceworld." The music icon eventually bowed out at £16,000, which he dedicated to two charities, The Princes Trust & Caring Hands.
