Between the free agent market and the trade market, the New York Yankees are rebuilding their empire. Still, the club should also consider their upcoming grass-roots players who could add great value to their roster. One of those prospects is left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge . Right-handed pitchers Clayton Beeter and Will Warren , and outfielder Jasson Dominguez are all prospects to watch. Although these individuals have made their major league debuts, the anticipation for a more fruitful season is upon us. Selvidge would make good company amongst the three. At present, Selvidge is ranked seventh in the Yankees farm system per MLB.com . His expected year of arrival in the big leagues is 2026. However, a fast track to 2025 is quite possible. The Background of Yankees Prospect Brock Selvidge Selvidge is a left-handed pitcher in the Yankees farm system. The Yankees selected him in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft in the third round, 92nd overall. Selvidge never played college baseball, being drafted out of Hamilton High School in Arizona. The prospect was a no-doubter in high school. He joined the 90s club in velocity early and gained attention from the scouting world due to his size and being a left-handed pitcher. Perfect Game had him ranked first in the state of Arizona as a left-handed pitcher, and second overall in the state. Nationally, Perfect Game ranked him fifth for his position and 40th overall. Selvidge’s Professional Statistics Selvidge naturally had minimal innings in years one and two in professional ball. Between 2021 and 2022, he recorded 45 1/3 innings. In 2023, the Yankee prospect advanced from the Rookie league and split time between Low and High-A. He saw 127 2/3 innings that season, finishing with a 3.45 ERA. Selvidge struck out 137 hitters walking 35, with 537 batters faced. In 2024, Selvidge got the call to Double-A Somerset. He accumulated 84 2/3 innings with a 4.25 ERA, 83 strikeouts, 40 walks, and a 1.394 WHIP. He also made the roster for the 2024 MLB Futures Game. Congratulations to Spencer Jones and Brock Selvidge on their selection to the @mlb 2024 All-Star Futures Game. pic.twitter.com/hh3VXjSn7T — Somerset Patriots (@SOMPatriots) July 2, 2024 Where and Why Does Selvidge Fit on the Big League Roster? Selvidge has not faced college hitters; he went straight from high school to professional ball. He is adapting well in that sense and has learned more about his craft and abilities. The left-handed pitcher has shown strong command, pitch usage, and baseball IQ. He’s fairly smart with his approach, educated on his opponents, and confident in his repertoire. From 2022 to 2024, the physical change in Selvidge’s profile has been apparent. He’s filled out more on the physical maturity side and his delivery has become more complex and emphasized. Pitch Arsenal Selvidge delivers a live fastball that bites in the mid-90s range, maxing at 95 mph. He commands this pitch well and works around the zone. His changeup is workable, but his two out-pitches are his slider and cutter. The slider moves hard glove side in the mid-80s, while the cutter jams left-handed hitters, getting loopy hacks and misses. All of his pitches are executed well, and he’s crafty with trust in his options. Selvidge would fit well in the Yankees bullpen , working his way to experience for a possible starter role in the years to come. He’d add nicely to the few left-handers on the staff. He showed good work last year in a very talented Double-A crop. Brock Selvidge is slated to arrive in the big leagues in 2026. However, if the Yankees are not concerned about long-term control, he could be up in 2025. This article first appeared on Last Word On Sports and was syndicated with permission.

Malique Ewin finished with team highs of 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Florida State Seminoles to a 92-59 victory over the Massachusetts Minutemen in each team's final game of the Naismith Hall of Fame Tip-Off on Sunday afternoon in Uncasville, Conn. The Seminoles (6-1) won their third consecutive game and went 2-0 in the event as they pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 36 points. It's Florida State's best start since the 2019-20 season when it went 7-1. UMass (1-5) dropped its fifth in a row following a season-opening win over New Hampshire despite a strong game on Sunday from Jaylen Curry, who scored 17 points. Curry, with six free throws, helped propel the Minutemen on a 10-0 run over a four-plus minute span in the first half to take a 24-23 lead with 4:22 left. FSU closed the half on a 13-3 run to lead 37-27 at halftime. A 15-4 surge to open the second half helped the Seminoles break the game open. Florida State's defense frustrated UMass shooters throughout the contest, especially on the perimeter, limiting the Minutemen to 3-for-24 shooting (12.5 percent) from 3-point range and 18-for-58 (31 percent) overall. The Seminoles finished with 22 points off 17 UMass turnovers. On the flipside, Florida State had one of its best shooting games of the season. The Seminoles moved the ball well throughout the game and finished with 25 assists while only turning the ball over 10 times. The Seminoles shot 33 for 58 (57 percent) from the field and made 9 of 18 three-pointers to put together a season-high scoring output. Once again, Florida State shined thanks to its depth as 10 players scored and four scored in double figures. The Seminoles were able to have 16 players participate in the game as well. Jamir Watkins finished with 14 points while Jerry Deng and Justin Thomas each had 10 points. For UMass, Daniel Rivera finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Nate Guerengomba had 10 points. Daniel Hankins-Sanford collected a game-high 13 rebounds. --Field Level Media

How Trump’s bet on voters electing him managed to silence some of his legal woes

By KAREEM CHEHAYEB BEIRUT (AP) — In 2006, after a bruising monthlong war between Israel and Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah militant group, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted for a resolution to end the conflict and pave the way for lasting security along the border. But while there was relative calm for nearly two decades, Resolution 1701’s terms were never fully enforced. Now, figuring out how to finally enforce it is key to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal approved by Israel on Tuesday. In late September, after nearly a year of low-level clashes , the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah spiraled into all-out war and an Israeli ground invasion . As Israeli jets pound deep inside Lebanon and Hezbollah fires rockets deeper into northern Israel, U.N. and diplomatic officials again turned to the 2006 resolution in a bid to end the conflict. Years of deeply divided politics and regionwide geopolitical hostilities have halted substantial progress on its implementation, yet the international community believes Resolution 1701 is still the brightest prospect for long-term stability between Israel and Lebanon. Almost two decades after the last war between Israel and Hezbollah, the United States led shuttle diplomacy efforts between Lebanon and Israel to agree on a ceasefire proposal that renewed commitment to the resolution, this time with an implementation plan to try to bring the document back to life. In 2000, Israel withdrew its forces from most of southern Lebanon along a U.N.-demarcated “Blue Line” that separated the two countries and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, which most of the world considers occupied Syrian territory. U.N. peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL , increased their presence along the line of withdrawal. Resolution 1701 was supposed to complete Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and ensure Hezbollah would move north of the Litani River, keeping the area exclusively under the Lebanese military and U.N. peacekeepers. Up to 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers would help to maintain calm, return displaced Lebanese and secure the area alongside the Lebanese military. The goal was long-term security, with land borders eventually demarcated to resolve territorial disputes. The resolution also reaffirmed previous ones that call for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon — Hezbollah among them. “It was made for a certain situation and context,” Elias Hanna, a retired Lebanese army general, told The Associated Press. “But as time goes on, the essence of the resolution begins to hollow.” For years, Lebanon and Israel blamed each other for countless violations along the tense frontier. Israel said Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force and growing arsenal remained, and accused the group of using a local environmental organization to spy on troops. Lebanon complained about Israeli military jets and naval ships entering Lebanese territory even when there was no active conflict. “You had a role of the UNIFIL that slowly eroded like any other peacekeeping with time that has no clear mandate,” said Joseph Bahout, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy at the American University of Beirut. “They don’t have permission to inspect the area without coordinating with the Lebanese army.” UNIFIL for years has urged Israel to withdraw from some territory north of the frontier, but to no avail. In the ongoing war, the peacekeeping mission has accused Israel, as well as Hezbollah , of obstructing and harming its forces and infrastructure. Hezbollah’s power, meanwhile, has grown, both in its arsenal and as a political influence in the Lebanese state. The Iran-backed group was essential in keeping Syrian President Bashar Assad in power when armed opposition groups tried to topple him, and it supports Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Yemen. It has an estimated 150,000 rockets and missiles, including precision-guided missiles pointed at Israel, and has introduced drones into its arsenal . Hanna says Hezbollah “is something never seen before as a non-state actor” with political and military influence. Israel’s security Cabinet approved the ceasefire agreement late Tuesday, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. The ceasefire is set to take hold at 4 a.m. local time Wednesday. Efforts led by the U.S. and France for the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah underscored that they still view the resolution as key. For almost a year, Washington has promoted various versions of a deal that would gradually lead to its full implementation. International mediators hope that by boosting financial support for the Lebanese army — which was not a party in the Israel-Hezbollah war — Lebanon can deploy some 6,000 additional troops south of the Litani River to help enforce the resolution. Under the deal, an international monitoring committee headed by the United States would oversee implementation to ensure that Hezbollah and Israel’s withdrawals take place. It is not entirely clear how the committee would work or how potential violations would be reported and dealt with. The circumstances now are far more complicated than in 2006. Some are still skeptical of the resolution’s viability given that the political realities and balance of power both regionally and within Lebanon have dramatically changed since then. “You’re tying 1701 with a hundred things,” Bahout said. “A resolution is the reflection of a balance of power and political context.” Now with the ceasefire in place, the hope is that Israel and Lebanon can begin negotiations to demarcate their land border and settle disputes over several points along the Blue Line for long-term security after decades of conflict and tension.Herro leads Heat over Rockets in game marred by fight and ejections in final minute

Doug Kelly: Niners’ season teetering on the brinkPeople facing long waits for NHS weight loss services could be taking matters into their own hands by buying potentially unsafe jabs online, the nation’s top GP has warned. Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs, warned some people are putting themselves at risk by purchasing drugs online from unregulated retailers, as well as potentially missing out on wraparound support needed alongside the medication. She also raised concerns about the safety of cheaper alternatives to the pre-filled injection pens which involve people preparing part of the medicine at home. It comes as the medicines regulator warned against buying weight loss medicines without a prescription on social media or through beauty salons. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) urged people to be aware of fake pharmacy websites and social media posts offering weight-loss medicines illegally without a prescription. It warned criminals will go to “great lengths” to make their businesses appear “authentic” and the products they are selling could potentially contain “toxins and other ingredients that could cause real harm”. Andy Morling, MHRA’s deputy director of criminal enforcement, said: “At this time of year, with many of us thinking about shedding a little excess weight, we see people offering weight loss medicines for sale as a quick fix, without a healthcare professional’s prescription, from beauty salons, websites and on social media. “These are not cosmetic treatments; they are powerful medicines that can only be legally and safely dispensed against a prescription issued by a healthcare professional. “Fake pharmacy websites and social media sellers illegally supply medicines that are not approved for use in the UK. These may contain toxins and other ingredients that could cause real harm, and you may even end up in hospital.” Meanwhile, Prof Hawthorne said the population is “gradually getting bigger and bigger” and has called on the Government to improve existing weight reduction services by ensuring they are properly resourced and have enough staff to meet demand. She urged people to reach out for help from their GPs before turning to the internet to buy drugs online. In an interview with the PA news agency, Prof Hawthorne said: “I think quite a lot of people are buying weight loss drugs privately. “We do have some serious concerns about that, because you don’t always know the provenance of the drugs that you’re buying unless it’s coming from an accredited company that’s properly regulated, and some of these places are not fully regulated. “So I think I would definitely be counselling the public not to do that privately, if they can possibly help it, and go to their GP.” Prof Hawthorne added that patients may not be getting appropriate wraparound care when they purchase the drugs online. She continued: “The place where I’m working we are referring people to weight loss clinics, but there’s a very long wait. “In the meantime, we’re talking about what else they can be doing to lose weight.” Asked if the long wait for weight management services could be turning people to buying drugs online, she said: “Yes, I’m sure that they do. “If you’re faced with a two-year waiting time and you want to lose weight now, and you know that there is a way that you can lose weight, you know that drug works because nobody’s denying that they don’t work, you might well decide that you’re going to just sort it out yourself. “I would definitely suggest that you come and talk to your doctor or practice nurse about what you’re intending to do and let them help you – they may know ways of helping you that you haven’t thought about. “So definitely come and talk about it. Please don’t go off and buy a (weight-loss injection) unless it is under the supervision of a medically qualified doctor.” Prof Hawthorne went on: “We are as a population gradually getting bigger and bigger, and that brings with it a huge amount of chronic illness. “We are calling on the Government to improve the services for weight reduction.” A recent Obesity Health Alliance report highlighted how some patients are being asked to wait for up to five years for specialist weight management support. Some overweight and obesity management services are so overstretched that they have closed their waiting lists entirely. The alliance claimed the provision of services is “insufficient and unavailable to a significant number of people”. Katharine Jenner, director of the Obesity Health Alliance, told PA: “Weight loss medications offer hope of tangible improvements in the lives of people with severe, chronic obesity. “However, these drugs are only safe and effective for those for whom they are medically appropriate, as prescribed by a legitimate prescriber, and are not a long-term solution for the millions of people living with obesity.” Earlier this year, NHS England chief executive Amanda Pritchard said “weight loss drugs will be a game-changer”, but “without transforming pathways they could overwhelm already-stretched services”. Obese people have been told they “will have to wait” for the so-called King Kong of weight-loss jabs, Mounjaro, amid a carefully managed NHS rollout, which spans 12 years. In the initial three years of its rollout, an estimated 220,000 people could benefit from the drug, out of around 3.4 million people estimated to be eligible. Those with the highest need will be front of the queue and NHS officials have pledged to review the rollout after the initial phase. The latest Health Survey for England shows 64% of adults were overweight or obese in 2022. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “Obesity can be debilitating, costing lives, the economy and the NHS. “The introduction of the weight loss drugs to the NHS will ensure that those with the most need will receive treatment first. “Where appropriate, these obesity drugs can greatly benefit those in real need. “However, we recognise these drugs are not a replacement for a good diet and exercise and as part of our 10 Year Health Plan we will shift the focus of healthcare from sickness to prevention.”Salah nervelessly converted a 63rd-minute penalty, his 16th goal of the season, after French referee Benoit Bastien had been advised to take another look at Donny van de Beek’s clumsy challenge on Luis Diaz. In the process, he became just the 11th man to score 50 goals in the competition – Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe later also joined that exclusive club – on a night when victory at the Estadi Montilivi meant the six-time European champions will enter 2025 sitting proudly at the top of the table. France international Michael Olise produced a moment of magic to set the seal on Bayern Munich’s demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk and ease them towards the knockout stage. Olise’s brilliant stoppage-time run and finish capped a 5-1 victory for the Germans, in which he had early scored from the penalty spot, in Gelsenkirchen. Kevin’s fifth-minute strike had given the home side the perfect start, but Konrad Laimer levelled before Thomas Muller’s 55th goal in the competition sent the visitors in ahead at the break and set the stage for Olise’s double either side of Jamal Musiala’s strike. Jude Bellingham breathed life back into Real Madrid’s campaign as they held off Atalanta to earn a 3-2 victory in Bergamo. After Charles De Ketelaere had cancelled out Mbappe’s opener from the penalty spot, second-half goals from Vinicius Junior and Bellingham in quick succession put the visitors in charge, although Ademola Lookman’s 65th-minute strike meant the contest was alive until the final whistle. Ross Barkley took Aston Villa a step closer to automatic qualification with a late winner against RB Leipzig in Germany. Villa had led twice through John McGinn and Jhon Duran, but equalisers from Lois Openda and Christoph Baumgartner kept Leipzig in it until substitute Barkley struck five minutes from time to snatch a 3-2 victory. Goals from Goncalo Ramos, Nuno Mendes and substitute Desire Doue – his first in the competition – handed French champions Paris St Germain a much-needed three points after a comfortable 3-0 win at RB Salzburg. Nordi Mukiele left it late to end Inter Milan’s unbeaten Champions League record as Bayer Leverkusen claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory at the BayArena. Mukiele struck in the 90th minute to inflict a first defeat across six games in this season’s competition on the Serie A champions – it was also the first goal they have conceded. Casper Nielsen came off the bench to fire Club Brugge to a 2-1 home victory over Sporting Lisbon after Eduardo Quaresma’s own goal had handed them a way back into the game following Geny Catamo’s early opener. Julien Le Cardinal’s first-half strike was enough to handed Brest a 1-0 victory over Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven, while Kasper Schmeichel’s save from Marko Pjaca’s close-range 80th-minute header ensured Celtic returned from Dinamo Zagreb with a 0-0 draw.
