LOGANTON — A large beef processor in Clinton County has applied for a permit from that if issued would likely allow it to resume construction of its sustainable resource management facility (SRF). Greene Twp. in June forced Nicholas Meat near Loganton to stop construction on its waste-to-energy technology project and an advanced wastewater treatment facility. The supervisors would not approve the land development plan unless Nicholas obtained a water quality management permit from the state Department of Environmental Protection. The permit is needed for Nicholas to construct a 13,000-gallon sewage treatment plant addition. Nicholas was advised in 2018 its sewage system was inadequate for its then 350 employees and 150 contract workers but was allowed to build a 20,000-gallon holding tank that was to be temporary. Currently, wastewater from septic system is hauled offsite for treatment. If the water quality management permit is approved, Nichols will construct a facility that will treat sanitary wastewater to Class A standards for discharge into an engineered ground water channel. DEP, which considers the sewage treatment plant addition and the SRF as one project, instructed the township not to issue any building permits that would result in an increase in domestic sewage. “We’ve lost several months that could have been spent on construction of the SRF,” said Duane Eichenlaub, meat regulatory and sustainability manager. Once DEP approves the permit Nicholas will move forward with the development of the SRF, he said. Eichenlaub expressed optimism it will be approved in 2025. Nicholas estimates when the SRF is operational, it will reuse up to 90 percent of the water from the plant’s operations, he said. “It is our goal to see this project through, overcoming whatever obstacles we encounter along the way because we know the importance of the benefits to the Sugar Valley residents and the environment,” he said. The estimated cost of the SRF when ground was broken in 2021 was $50 million. The cost is significantly more today, Eichenlaub said. The SRF being at a standstill has not affected the operations of the plant or the modern barn completed in May, he said. The barn, that can hold up to 1,000 cattle, was designed to enable recycled wastewater from the SRF to be used to clean the pens. When operational the SRF will reduce the dependence on land application of food processing residuals, the company says. The plant was shut down for several weeks in 2021 after DEP prohibited the application of the residuals on snow-covered fields. Mikel Arteta gives Gabriel injury update as Arsenal's key clash with Man United looms | Sporting NewsLANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Dallas’ Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown, and the Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Part of that was the play of backup Cooper Rush, who threw for 247 yards and two TDs in his third start in place of starter Dak Prescott. Part was also the defense forcing two turnovers, as Chauncey Golston ripped the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what was called an interception of Daniels in the second quarter, and Donovan Wilson stripped John Bates midway through the fourth. KaVonte Turpin provided the fireworks with a spinning, 99-yard kickoff return TD seconds after Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone and scored on a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 3:02 left. In the final three minutes alone, the Commanders (7-5) scored 10 points and allowed Thomas' TD. All that after the score was 10-9 through three quarters before madness ensued. Washington's playoff hopes that looked solid not long ago are now in serious jeopardy after losing to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Dallas. Before the scoring outburst late, much of this defeat had to do with Daniels and the offense not being able to find any kind of a rhythm. The Cowboys did, despite playing without their two best offensive linemen, top cornerback and starting tight end. Rush's 6-yard pass to Jalen Tolbert was Dallas' first third-quarter TD of the season, and his 22-yarder to Luke Schoonmaker came after Wilson's forced fumble. Daniels finished 25 of 38 for 274 yards, including his second interception of the game on a failed Hail Mary as the clock expired. Rico Dowdle ran 19 times for 86 yards to spring the upset for the Cowboys, who were 10 1/2-point underdogs on BetMGM Sportsbook. A senior White House official on Thursday said nuclear-armed Pakistan is developing long-range ballistic missile capabilities that eventually could allow it to strike targets well beyond South Asia, making it an "emerging threat" to the United States. Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer's surprise revelation underscored how far the once-close ties between Washington and Islamabad have deteriorated since the 2021 U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App It also raised questions about whether Pakistan has shifted the objectives of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs long intended to counter those of India, the victor in three major wars they have fought since 1947. Speaking to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Finer said Pakistan has pursued "increasingly sophisticated missile technology, from long-range ballistic missile systems to equipment, that would enable the testing of significantly larger rocket motors." If those trends continue, Finer said, "Pakistan will have the capability to strike targets well beyond South Asia, including in the United States." The number of nuclear-armed states with missiles that can reach the U.S. homeland "is very small and they tend to be adversarial," he continued, naming Russia, North Korea and China. "So, candidly, it's hard for us to see Pakistan's actions as anything other than an emerging threat to the United States," Finer said. His speech came a day after Washington announced a new round of sanctions related to Pakistan's ballistic missile development program, including against the state-run defense agency that oversees the program. The Pakistani embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Islamabad casts its long-range ballistic missile program as a deterrent against Indian aggression and intended to maintain regional stability. Finer included himself among senior U.S. officials who he said repeatedly have raised concerns about the program with top Pakistani officials. Washington and Islamabad, he noted, had been "long-time partners" on development, counterterrorism and security. "That makes us question even more why Pakistan will be motivated to develop a capability that could be used against us." Pakistan conducted its first nuclear weapons test in 1998 - more than 20 years after India's first test blast - becoming the seventh country to do so. It also has built an extensive arsenal of ballistic missiles capable of lofting nuclear warheads. The Bulletin of the American Scientists research organization estimates that Pakistan has a stockpile of about 170 warheads. Read more of the latest international headlines U.S.-Pakistani relations have undergone major ups and downs, including close Cold War ties that saw them support Afghan rebels against the 1979-89 Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Pakistan also was a key partner in the U.S. fight against al Qaeda following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, and has been a major non-NATO ally since 2004. But ties also have been hurt by coups staged by the Pakistani military, its support for the Taliban's 1996-2001 rule and its nuclear weapons program. Several experts said Finer's speech came as a major surprise. "For a senior U.S. official to publicly link concerns about proliferation in Pakistan to a future direct threat to the U.S. homeland - this is a mighty dramatic development," said Michael Kugelman of the Wilson Center think tank. Elizabeth Threlkeld of the Stimson Center think tank, said Finer's speech showed that Pakistani officials had failed to reassure Washington about the aims of their missile and nuclear weapons programs and that U.S. concerns are mounting.

AI has transformed the way we search for information online. By delivering more precise and context-aware results, AI-driven search engines like Google , SearchGPT , and Perplexity aim to make finding information faster and easier. While many users embrace these enhancements, others prefer the simplicity of traditional search methods. The good news is, if you want to go back to the list of blue links, you can easily turn off AI in your Google search results . But before you do, let’s explore the pros and cons of AI search features and take a look at how you can tailor your search experience to suit your preferences. Google’s AI overviews Google’s introduction of AI-generated overviews in search results has changed the game with summaries that condense information from multiple sources. This method aims to give users quick answers by highlighting the key points. For those pressed for time, this feature might suffice. However, it has its drawbacks. Summaries rely on AI interpretations, which can sometimes lead to inaccuracies or oversimplifications. For users who prefer the depth and nuance of manually exploring search results, the AI overview can feel limiting, even inaccurate at times. Although you cannot permanently disable AI overviews, there are a few tricks to keep it out of your searches. You can select the "web-only" view for individual searches to bypass the AI summaries or simply add “-A” in the search box after your search. These small fixes ensure that you maintain control over how you engage with Google. AI search engine alternatives It’s also possible that Google’s approach might not fit your search style. For that reason, there are plenty of AI-powered search engines worth exploring that may align better with your preferences. Platforms like Perplexity, You.com, and Bing AI take unique approaches to search, each with distinct advantages. Bing AI integrates OpenAI ’s GPT-4 technology, offering users a conversational search experience. You can ask Bing detailed questions, and it will generate natural, context-aware responses. Perplexity focuses on delivering concise answers with reliable sourcing. Its transparent approach appeals to users who value accuracy and clarity. This search engine is particularly useful for academic or technical research, as it cites sources directly within the search response. Google Learn About offers detailed, conversational responses with a focus on education and learning. If you’re doing a research paper or simply want to know more about a certain topic, this search platform can be both a time-saver and educator. SearchGPT comes at the price of a subscription, but if you’re looking to get fast, concise answers, this search engine might be what you need. The conversation-like platform and ability to remember past searches, can help with productivity and seamless workflow. The benefits of AI in search Despite some reservations, AI in search engines brings undeniable advantages to the table. For starters, AI brings a level of personalization to your search by analyzing your user preferences and past behaviors. This means your search results will become increasingly relevant to you the more you utilize AI-driven platforms. Because advanced AI excels at understanding natural language and predicting user intent, you may find that it can handle complex searches faster and more efficiently. You’ll save time by getting the most essential information without sifting through multiple sources. As a benefit, the sources are listed, so if you choose, you can still search through those. The conversational interface of AI search engines and real-time data integration is helpful for creating a user-friendly and more interactive search experience. This can be helpful, particularly if you’re researching a dull or difficult topic. Balancing AI with user control AI-powered search engines are undeniably reshaping how we interact with information. They bring convenience, efficiency and personalization, making them invaluable tools. However, the evolution of these tools also means that users have a choice, ensuring that AI enhances — rather than replaces — our ability to explore and understand information. As AI continues to evolve, we’re likely to see even more sophisticated search capabilities . For now, whether you’re team AI or team traditional search, you have the flexibility to can take control of the way you search for and receive information. The first two episodes of "Beast Games," hosted by YouTube creator James "Jimmy" Donaldson, more popularly known as MrBeast, premiered on Prime Video on Thursday. Per the show's description , 1,000 contestants fight through 10 episodes in physical and mental challenges for prizes that include $5 million, a private island and Lamborghinis. But following the premiere, a consumer advocate said the show's partnership with financial tech company MoneyLion could be worrisome, especially when it comes to MrBeast's younger demographic. Additionally, ahead of its release, "Beast Games" made headlines after five contestants sued Donaldson and Amazon for workplace abuse. Concerns grow about fintech partnership In the second episode of "Beast Games," viewers are encouraged to scan a QR code to learn more about a $4.2 million sweepstakes through MoneyLion . To enter, viewers must create a free MoneyLion account, but no purchase, payment or deposit is required to participate or win, according to the sweepstakes' rules. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. Though sweepstakes participants aren't required to take any financial actions through MoneyLion, the financial technology company does promote its services, which include personal loans, instant cash, financial tracking and credit builders. Lauren Saunders, associate director of the National Consumer Law Center, said companies like MoneyLion are a "new breed" of fintech payday loan companies. A payday loan is a short-term, high-interest loan that is typically due on the borrower's next payday. "We see a lot of these predatory lenders that offer loans that can be the equivalent of 300% APR, but they wrap themselves in all sort of sugarcoating," Saunders said of MoneyLion. "Offering the sweepstakes and something like that to get the excitement of young people is just a way of drawing people into debt-trap loans that increase overdraft fees and put them behind in their financial goals." According to Parrot Analytics , 46% of MrBeast's audience is made up of viewers between 13-22 years old. Saunders said she finds it "really destressing" that fintech companies like MoneyLion are using "attractive" apps to lure in young people. "They can make a lot of money from vulnerable people," she said. In a statement shared with USA TODAY, a MoneyLion spokesperson clarified that the sweepstakes is only for adults 18 and up. "MoneyLion’s mission is to give everyone the power to make their best financial decisions and achieve better outcomes," the spokesperson said. "We remain focused on ensuring that our products and services terms are accessible, fair, and designed to create the best outcomes for our customers." What is the 'Beast Games' lawsuit about? In September, five "Beast Games" contestants filed a class action lawsuit against MrBeast and Amazon for workplace abuse, citing denial of pay, unsafe conditions and "a culture of misogyny and sexism." More: YouTuber MrBeast, Amazon sued by reality show contestants alleging abuse, harassment The lawsuit addresses the workplace created during "episode zero" of "Beast Games" earlier this year. The episode, featured on MrBeast's YouTube channel and not a part of the official Amazon series, features 2,000 contestants fighting for the $5 million prize inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was from this video that the final 1,000 contestants were selected for the Amazon series, which was filmed in Toronto, Canada. According to the lawsuit, contestants were deprived of food, sleep and proper medical care. The lawsuit claims that multiple contestants suffered physical injuries or were hospitalized during production. The lawsuit also alleges that women were subject to "severe embarrassment" on set and the production did not complete thorough background checks. The lawsuit also claims "Beast Games" contestants were required to enter "illegal contracts" that misclassified them as volunteers in order for the show to qualify for tax breaks while filming in Las Vegas. Amazon denied comment and MrBeast's team did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the lawsuit when contacted Thursday and Friday by USA TODAY. How to watch 'Beast Games' "Beast Games" is only available for streaming on Prime Video. The first two episodes were released Thursday and a new episode will be released every Thursday at noon EST through Feb. 13. The series features 10 total episodes, each about 40 minutes long. Who is MrBeast? Donaldson, 26, is a YouTube content creator with more than 337 million YouTube subscribers, making his channel the most-subscribed on the platform. He is known for videos that feature larger-than-life competitions and pricy giveaways. Donaldson's most viewed video , as of Friday, was a take on the Netflix series "Squid Games." In the video, Donaldson pits 456 contestants against each other for a $456,000 prize. Unlike the Netflix series though, no one actually dies. As of Friday, the video had more than 678 million views.
