Former President Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100 on Sunday, a little over a year after his beloved wife Rosalynn Carter passed away. Newsweek reached out to The Carter Center via email for comment on Sunday evening. Why It Matters Jimmy and Rosalynn were not only the 39th president and first lady but also leading human rights advocates through their Atlanta nonprofit, The Carter Center, created after the two left the White House. Also remarkable is the length of their love story. The two were married for 77 years before Rosalynn died in November 2023, the longest marriage in presidential history. The former first lady reportedly was Jimmy's closest adviser during his presidency and thereafter. What To Know Jimmy and Rosalynn, both from Plains, Georgia, wed on July 7, 1946, a year after their first date. In the summer of 1945, Jimmy, then-20 years old, asked Rosalynn, then-17 years old, out to the movies on a whim, People magazine reported. Jimmy originally popped the question in the winter of 1945, but Rosalynn was concerned about the speed at which their relationship was progressing and wanted to finish her education first, so she said no, according to Biography.com. But in the spring of that year, she agreed to marry him and Jimmy gave her a compact engraved with the letters "ILYTG," which stood for, "I love you the goodest," Biography.com reported. "The best thing I ever did was marrying Rosalynn," Jimmy said during an interview at The Carter Center in 2015. "That's the pinnacle of my life." The pair went on to have four children —Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy— as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Jimmy and Rosalynn in the White House Jimmy, a Democrat, was elected to the White House in November 1976, thanks to the help of who people called his "secret weapon," Rosalynn, according to People magazine. Rosalynn told People in 1976, "I've made as many as 12 speeches a day in one community. I enjoy it. But sometimes I want to stop and wash my hair." Jimmy served one term as president from 1977 to 1981. Jimmy was credited with encouraging a peace agreement in the Middle East that ultimately resulted in the Camp David Accords, which the Office of the Historian at the U.S. Department of State described as "historic." The White House archives lists the Panama Canal treaties and an agreement between the U.S. and the Soviet Union restricting nuclear weapon production as some of Carter's biggest victories overseas. In the U.S., Carter pursued deregulation in a handful of industries, including energy and transportation, and pushed for new environmental protections. The U.S. Department of Education also launched during his time in office. Rosalynn was also busy in the White House, representing the administration during visits with Central and South American leaders, fundraising for displaced Cambodians, and sponsoring poetry and jazz festivals at the White House. She was also a vocal advocate for mental health, women's rights, and human rights. Post-Presidency Humanitarian Work In 1982, Jimmy and Rosalynn created The Carter Center in partnership with Emory University. The former first lady was Carter's "full partner" in their efforts at the nonprofit and she also created and chaired its Mental Health Task Force. The Carter Center was created "on a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering" and describes its continuing mission as seeking "to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health." Rosalynn was also president of the board of directors for the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, which supports those who care for loved ones with chronic illness and disabilities. Until 2020, Jimmy and Rosalynn volunteered one week a year for the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity, which helps renovate and build homes for those in need. Jimmy was recognized "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development" with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Rosalynn and Jimmy's Deaths Rosalynn died at the age of 96 on November 19, 2023, while in hospice care at her Plains, Georgia, home, months after The Carter Center announced that she suffered from dementia . Jimmy, who had been in hospice care since February 2023 , died Sunday. What People Are Saying Jimmy said in a statement released by The Carter Center when Rosalynn died, "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished." He added: "She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me." Chip Carter, Jimmy and Rosalynn's second eldest son who is now 72 years old , said in a statement released by The Carter Center Sunday, "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love." He continued: "My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs." What Happens Next There will be public funeral observances for the former president in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., as long as a private interment in Plains, Georgia. Final arrangements for his state funeral are still pending.More than 100 arrested in Georgia protests after government puts EU hopes on iceBolivia’s former president Evo Morales said his car was fired on in what he claimed was an “assassination attempt” amid simmering political tensions in the South American country. Morales, who was not injured, blamed the government for the attack, which he called a “failure” that adds to the “political defeat of a government that has lost legitimacy in the eyes of the Bolivian people.” The government denied any involvement and said that an investigation had been opened. Morales said he was heading to the radio station in the central Bolivian department of Cochabamba, where he hosts a weekend program, when two vehicles intercepted his car and “four hooded officers dressed in black with weapons in their hands, got out and began to shoot.” Fourteen bullets hit the car, injuring his driver in the head and arm, Morales said during his radio show. Morales posted a cell-phone video on Facebook which he claimed shows the alleged attack. It shows the driver’s bloodied head and several bullet holes in the car’s windshield. Morales is seen in the passenger seat as they frantically drive away. Morales posted to his Instagram profile a statement from his party, Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), blaming the attack on current Bolivian President Luis Arce and two of his government ministers. The statement did not provide evidence supporting this claim. CNN reached out to the presidential office and the respective government ministries for their response to Morales’ accusations. It also reached out to the Bolivian Attorney General on the status of their investigation. CNN has not received a response from Arce’s office or the government ministries. However, in a statement on X, Arce condemned political violence and said he had ordered an “immediate and thorough investigation” into the alleged attack. Bolivia’s Deputy Security Minister Roberto Rios said that there had not been a police operation against Morales and that his department would investigate the claims, including the possibility of a “self-attack” staged by Morales, state-run news agency Agencia Boliviana de Información (ABI) reported. Several Latin American leaders have condemned the alleged assassination attempt, including Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Colombian President Gustavo Petro also warned the attack could represent a threat to democracy. “Fascism is on the rise throughout Latin America. It is no longer just about legal elimination. Now they are moving on to the same old thing: the physical elimination of those who think differently,” he said. In a twist on Monday, Bolivian Minister of Government Eduardo Del Castillo Del Carpio accused individuals in Morales’ car of shooting at drug enforcement officers during the same incident. According to Castillo Del Carpio, law enforcement officers had set up the checkpoint to conduct an anti-drug tracking operation over the weekend. When Morales’ car approached, they ordered it to slow down, but the people onboard sped up and pulled out weapons, firing at the officers, he alleged. Morales has denied the allegations as “false and lying,” saying in a statement on X that no one in the car carried “any kind of weapon.” Power struggle Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous president, led the country for more than a decade before he resigned from his office in November 2019 due to mounting accusations of electoral fraud, which he has denied. Ultimately, Morales claimed he was forced out in a coup and fled to Mexico, where he was granted political asylum. His resignation was followed by deadly clashes between Bolivian security forces and Morales supporters. After a year of exile in Argentina, Morales returned to his home region of Chapare in central Bolivia in 2020, while stating his intention to remain involved in politics. Throughout the past year, Morales has clashed with sitting president Arce – his fellow MAS party member and former ally – as both politicians battle for reelection in 2025. Arce’s government is currently investigating Morales over allegations of human trafficking, which he rejects as political persecution. The power struggle has unfolded during a period of acute economic strife in Bolivia. In recent weeks, blockades set up by Morales’ supporters on major highways have led to food and fuel shortages in some cities. Bolivian police have said the blockades involve “violent armed groups.” In a statement, Bolivia’s foreign ministry denounced the “destabilizing actions” from Morales, who they said encouraged the blockades in an attempt to “disrupt the democratic order.” The political turmoil in Bolivia reached a flashpoint in June with the arrest of a general accused of orchestrating a coup against the government. Armed soldiers and armored vehicles led by Gen. Juan Jose Zúñiga attempted to occupy government offices and break into the government palace to oust Arce.calico hills vs calico tanks

Kopitar helps the Kings beat the Senators 5-2 for their season-high 3rd straight winGrok Academy, the coding academy formerly led by disgraced chief executive James Curran, has avoided being shut down and will undergo a cultural overhaul after being acquired by a social impact charity. More than 200,000 students nationally went through Grok Academy’s coding classes last year, and more than 1 million students have used its learning platform to date. James Curran, Grok Academy boss and National Computer Science School director. Credit: Matt Davidson The non-profit was plunged into turmoil this year, however, when its boss James Curran resigned after multiple allegations of harassment were substantiated by an independent investigator. This masthead spoke to nine women who allege Curran sent them inappropriate messages, in many instances while they were high school students, in allegations that span 10 years. For each of the women, Curran represented a powerful, influential mentor figure who promised to help them with their careers, but then abused their trust by making sexualised comments – and in some cases, inappropriate touching – during a game he called “jungle speed”. Curran has apologised and told this masthead he was “deeply sorry” for his actions. As the allegations came to light, as many as 80 of Grok’s 100 permanent staff were made redundant, and half of its board, chaired by former University of Technology Sydney deputy vice-chancellor Shirley Alexander, resigned. Grok Academy was funded in part by the billionaire former chief executive of Australian software company WiseTech Global Richard White, who personally donated more than $2 million to the non-profit. White had championed Curran as a “superb educator” who was “incredibly powerful in delivering tech education”. White resigned as WiseTech chief executive in October following an aborted court case against an ex-lover and allegations published by this masthead of inappropriate conduct. Grok had also landed partnerships with universities and large companies, including ANZ, CBA, NAB, Westpac and Amazon, some of whom withdrew their funding after the allegations against Curran were revealed. However, Grok has been thrown a lifeline after being acquired by Adelaide-based social impact charity KIK Innovation, which runs major IT school network 42 Adelaide. KIK Innovation CEO Louise Nobes. Credit: KIK chief executive Louise Nobes told this masthead she first heard about Grok Academy’s issues when travelling in Britain. “In discussions with my board, we thought we could help, given that we have an experienced female CEO and founder, charity status, and deep skills in tech education,” Nobes said. “I reached out and the discussion soon turned to the need for a new home for the high-school tech education platform, as it was becoming obvious that Grok would have to shut down, as it would be unlikely to receive further partnerships or donations. “Luckily, the Grok constitution had a mechanism that allowed Grok to gift the IP to another similar non-for-profit to enable the charity’s purpose to continue.” Nobes said she would lead a cultural shift at the organisation. She said KIK made offers of employment to a “small number of previous Grok employees who have the knowledge, skills and expertise needed to ensure a successful transition of the platform to KIK”. KIK Innovation’s most recent financial statement filed with the charity regulator showed it had nine employees as of January and had pulled in just over $2 million in revenue for the prior financial year. “Our immediate plan is to ensure that the schools, teachers and the more than 1 million students who have used Grok Academy continue to have access to the same great platform and resources. Ensuring continuity of access is our No. 1 priority,” Nobes said. “As a female founder and CEO, ensuring that all participants including women and girls feel safe and heard in their interactions and have access to the same opportunities is of the utmost importance to me, as is fostering a culture of trust, respect and safety within KIK. “We are proudly a team of majority women, and with KIK being the new home of Grok Academy, a culture shift will be inevitable as it has a new home and CEO, and each of the team that has transitioned to KIK has been made familiar with our principles and their obligations to KIK and the students.” The cultural issues at Grok Academy were related to a single person, and were not systemic, Nobes said. “We’re proud to be the new home of the fantastic high-school tech education platform, and I am excited to see the impact we can achieve together.” The news was welcomed by some of the young women who alleged Curran sent them inappropriate messages. “I’m happy that the Grok platform will live on,” one whistleblower, Stephanie*, told this masthead. Stephanie, a former Grok employee, alleged instances of inappropriate touching and messages from Curran. According to Stephanie, over a period of months, Curran would frequently message late at night and ask questions about her sexual history and preferences, including references to masturbation. “A lot of good people put a lot of good, hard work into making it what it is, despite the harassment and cultural issues they faced from James Curran, personally and through his leadership,” she told this masthead. “There will be a lot of people out there who are happy that their work is living on because the impact we made isn’t something that can be taken away by what this man did.” *Name changed to protect whistleblower’s identity. With Boston standout Hilary Knight in the penalty box for a vicious boarding penalty on Sceptres defender Renata Fast, Miller made good on her rebound attempt on a Daryl Watts shot with a half-open net. Fast recovered for an assist on the winner before 8,089 fans at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The Fleet (0-1-0) challenged the goal, but video review deemed Miller's shot was good. Sarah Nurse got Toronto (1-0-0) on the board with a short-handed tally 11:50 into the first period and Emma Maltais added an empty-net strike to seal the score at 3-1 with 12 seconds left on the game clock. Boston's Hilary Knight opened the scoring at the 3:00 mark of the opening frame, sending a slap shot past Toronto goalie Kristin Campbell, who registered 18 stops on the night. Toronto outshot Boston 41-19. Boston goalie Aerin Frankel, a big reason why her team advanced to the Walter Cup final last spring, was outstanding with 38 saves. Frankel made a significant glove-hand stop on Toronto defender Jocelyne Larocque with 6:36 remaining in the third period. Larocque was alone when a rebound caromed to her in front. But the puck was rolling, and she could only lift her shot straight into Frankel's glove. Nurse's goal tested the league's new jailbreak rule that sees a minor penalty — in this case, Izzy Daniel's tripping infraction — wiped out when a team scores a short-handed goal. . Takeaways Sceptres: Billie Jean King MVP Natalie Spooner missed the season opener. The PWHL scoring champion underwent left knee surgery last June after getting injured in Game 3 of Toronto's first-round series against Minnesota. Fleet: Defender Emma Greco of Burlington, Ont., played her first game for Boston. She was part of the Walter Cup-winning Minnesota team that defeated Boston in a three-game series last spring. Greco is one of five Ontario-born players on the Fleet roster. Key moment With the game tied 1-1, the Sceptres failed to score during a 59-second 5-on-3 advantage midway through the second period. Boston blocked five shots during the span. Key stat Last year, Toronto enjoyed an 11-game win streak en route to its regular-season championship, including three wins against Boston. Up next Toronto visits Ottawa on Tuesday. Boston will play its home opener on Wednesday, a rematch with the Walter Cup-champion Minnesota. Cam Carter scored LSU's first eight points and finished with a game-high 23 and LSU raced to a 37-8 lead on its way to a 110-45 victory against outmanned Mississippi Valley State on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La. Vyctorius Miller added 20 points and Jordan Sears and Daimion Collins scored 15 each for the Tigers (11-2), who led 55-13 at halftime. It was their final game before opening Southeastern Conference play against visiting Vanderbilt on Saturday. LSU, which defeated Mississippi Valley 106-60 last season, shot 65.7 percent (46 of 70) from the floor. The Delta Devils (2-11) had no player score in double figures. The closest was Alvin Stredic with eight points. Mississippi Valley State remained winless against Division I opponents and have an average margin of defeat of 44.2 points heading into their Southwestern Athletic Conference opener at Alabama State on Jan. 4. Stredic's field goal tied the score at two before Carter made a tie-breaking 3-pointer to give LSU the lead for good. Carter made another 3-pointer during a 7-0 run that increased the lead to 12-4. Another field goal by Stredic ended that run before Carter and Sears each made a 3-pointer and the Tigers pushed the lead to 20-6. Stredic made another field goal, giving him six of his team's first eight points, before Carter made a 3-pointer and another basket to help fuel a 17-0 run that enabled LSU to build the 37-8 bulge. Johnathan Pace made a field goal to stop the run, but Sears and Curtis Givens III each made a 3-pointer to complete a 10-0 run that expanded the lead to 47-10. Jair Horton answered with the Delta Devils' only 3-pointer of the half before Miller and Sears each scored four points and the Tigers led by 42 at the break. Carter (16 points) and Sears (10) combined to score twice as many points as Mississippi Valley State in the half. Carter made 6-of-10 3-pointers and Sears made 4 of 8. --Field Level MediaAmid facing bribery charges worth $265 million by US authorities, billionaire Gautam Adani responded by saying that this is not the first time the company has faced such challeneges and every attack made us stronger. (The Center Square) – President Donald Trump has promised to reduce government waste and employed wealthy businessmen Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the charge. So far, spending on federal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies are prime targets for Musk and Ramaswamy, and a recent report shows just how widespread federal DEI spending has become. The report from Do No Harm shows 500 ways the Biden-Harris administration “infused DEI into the federal government.” Those examples include federal agencies starting dozens of equity training programs, doling out federal contracts and jobs based on race and gender, and teaching Americans more about their country’s racism, both past and present. The DEI explosion took off after Biden issued executive orders on his first day in office as well as another in June of 2021. The first executive order “established that affirmatively advancing equity, civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity is the responsibility of the whole of our Government.” The second order established “that it is the policy of my Administration to cultivate a workforce that draws from the full diversity of the Nation.” Biden also issued other executive orders, including around gender and sexuality, to the same effect his first year in office. Those orders gave federal bureaucrats not only permission but actually direct orders to embrace DEI policies across the board. And Do No Harm’s report shows they did, full-throttle, citing 80 “Equity Action Plans” submitted by agencies that promised over 500 taxpayer-funded actions. Some of the actions are seemingly mild, such as the U.S. Social Security Administration tracking more racial data. Other examples of DEI policies, though, made the federal government the nation’s teacher. For example, a blog for the U.S. Treasury Department lectures Americans on racial inequality. More directly, the federal government began implementing training programs for many federal employees that fully embrace racial ideology labeled “woke” by its opponents. For instance, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission invested in training for employees to consider equity more in its regulatory decisions. “Training will address how equity and environmental justice involves removing barriers underserved communities may face in the context of the Commission’s practices, processes, and policies,” FERC said in its Equity Action Plan. “Training also will address how, consistent with FERC’s mission and statutory duties, the Commission considers the impact of its actions on such communities. More specific trainings geared toward the responsibilities of different program offices and issue areas also may be identified or developed and offered.” Other actions seem to favor some groups over others. Changing the “percentage” of benefits received necessarily requires giving contracts, grants, or other federal resources to certain groups, almost always at the expense of white Americans, even more often white men. For example, the American Battle Monuments Commissions in its Equity Action Plan called for “expanding the percentage of U.S.-based contracted goods and services awarded to minority-owned, women-owned, and service disabled veteran-owned enterprises.” In fact, the ABMC pledged to pay a worker for this sole purpose. In another instance, the Smithsonian Institute pledged to recruit more Black and indigenous interns. “One of the simplest ways to ensure equity and accessibility in internships is to provide a livable stipend and advertise it clearly in promotion materials,” the federal group said in its Equity Action Plan. “Many units include a statement directly in their internship description about their commitment to equity. They also are intentional about making the application process simple and transparent, offering access services for interviews and allowing for multiple formats in place of a required essay.” The Smithsonian Institution , the federal steward of America’s past, also promised to begin promoting a historical framework that emphasizes American racism in the past and today. The federal group pledged to “Address the historical roots and contemporary impacts of race and racism in the United States and globally through interdisciplinary scholarship, creative partnerships, dialogue, education, and engagement.” The Center Square has reported on other examples of DEI policies and grants becoming the norm in recent years as well, though much of this kind of spending began before the Biden-Harris administration took power. KUWAIT CITY, Dec 15: In a major step towards implementing the roadmap for the country’s comprehensive digital transformation project, the State Audit Bureau (SAB) approved the request of the Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) to sign a lease contract with Google Cloud for establishing three major data centers in different locations in Kuwait, with total revenues of up to KD 12.6 million over the next 20 years. According to informed sources, the approval followed a thorough review of CITRA’s request, which outlined the annual revenues from the three sites — Sulaibiya Agricultural Area, Jaber Al-Ahmad Residential City, and South Al-Mutlaa Residential City. These sites, each spanning 30,000 square meters, are expected to generate annual revenues of KD 210,000 from each center. The sources said, “This step will significantly boost CITRA’s revenues over the 20-year contract, totaling KD 12.6 million. The contract, which is set to be signed soon between CITRA and Google, is based on Cabinet’s resolution No. 1274/2023 that granted CITRA the authority to conclude and sign contracts for private state real estate properties related to facilities, land, and uses allocated to the authority.” They affirmed that SAB approved the contract with Google Cloud Services, under the condition that CITRA coordinates with the relevant ministries to ensure the lands are delivered free of obstacles before finalizing the agreements, and SAB has set a maximum approval period of 90 days. The sources highlighted that this project represents a strategic move to strengthen cloud infrastructure in Kuwait and reflects the collaboration between the government and international companies to enhance digital transformation, in line with the state’s vision for digitalization. He was 100 years old . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. As reaction poured in from around the world, President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others. “To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.” Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington. A moderate Democrat, Carter ran for president in 1976 as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978. But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election. Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded The Carter Center in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiate cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. Carter was determined to eradicate guinea worm infections as one of many health initiatives. Swinging hammers into their 90s, the Carters built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians revisit his presidency and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America's dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. Emphasizing human rights , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise" speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter's diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. married fellow Plains native Rosalynn Smith in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and they soon turned their ambitions to politics . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. After rural white and Black voters elected him governor in 1970, he drew national attention by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Carter published more than 30 books and remained influential as his center turned its democracy advocacy onto U.S. politics, monitoring an audit of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results. After a 2015 cancer diagnosis, Carter said he felt “perfectly at ease with whatever comes.” “I’ve had a wonderful life,” he said. “I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.” Sanz is a former Associated Press reporter.

( MENAFN - Jordan Times) AMMAN - Gaza Sky Geeks, a programme of the international organisation Mercy Corps, has formed a strategic partnership with Edraak, the non-profit educational initiative of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development, aimed at equipping Palestinian youth with essential digital skills to thrive for today's job market. Announced on Sunday by Edraak, the collaboration combines the expertise and networks of both organisations to offer new opportunities for young Palestinians, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Established in collaboration with google for Startups, Gaza Sky Geeks has been a leader in training Palestinian youth in programming and digital skills in the West Bank and Gaza Strip for nearly a decade, preparing them for the demands of the rapidly evolving digital economy. Chairman of Edraak's Board of Directors Bassem Saad highlighted the significance of this collaboration in advancing the platform's mission to provide accessible, high-quality and free online education. He emphasised that Edraak's core vision is to create long-lasting, positive change in Arab communities by empowering youth through continuous learning opportunities. Saad added that the partnership with Gaza Sky Geeks is a key step in helping Palestinian youth overcome economic challenges and position themselves better in the global workforce. He highlighted that this initiative comes at a critical time for Gaza's youth, many of whom have faced educational disruption due to more than 15 months of instability. The collaboration seeks to deliver specialised training programmes tailored to the specific needs of young people in Gaza, supporting them in navigating current challenges while providing access to advanced education and professional opportunities. Executive Director of Gaza Sky Geeks Alan Kadhi acknowledged the urgency of forming both local and international partnerships, particularly in light of the ongoing hardships in the region, including the recent war in Gaza and escalating violence in the West Bank. He underlined that expanding the programme's reach and opening up new opportunities for Palestinian businesses and youth is essential to overcoming these challenges and unlocking new economic prospects. The collaboration also aims to boost ties between Palestinian and Jordanian institutions in the fields of economic and technological empowerment. Both sides share the belief that technology is a powerful enabler of economic growth, particularly through remote work opportunities, and that empowering young people with the necessary skills is crucial for long-term economic resilience. In 2023, Gaza Sky Geeks trained over 3,000 graduates and more than 7,000 trainees in Gaza, but the organisation's activities were suspended following the escalation of war in the Strip in October of the previous year. Bengaluru: Sustainability is no longer a choice, but a necessity as the world grapples with consequences of climate change and resource depletion. Bengaluru, known for its innovation and vibrant community spirit, is leading the way in embracing sustainable practices . From startups promoting circular economies and eco-conscious technologies to architects conserving heritage and artists embracing sustainable materials, a few firms in the city are setting an example for urban resilience and environmental responsibility. Eco Dhaga collected around 6,800 kilograms of post-consumer textiles recently. The used or discarded clothes were recycled and turned into funky table mats and coasters. "It also enabled us to reduce landfill waste," said Sanjana Swaroop, founder of Eco Dhaga. Sanjana was talking about circular economy and what her organisation has been doing in the space at a panel discussion on sustainable designs, moderated by MXR co-founder Madan Mohan Rao at M Cube Spaces here on Saturday. "Fashion industry is one of the largest polluters. We are trying to create awareness on what you can do to improve the environment with your closet itself," said Sanjana. Some startups like Reusall are coming up with a software solutions for resuablity. "We are creating an intuitive app and an impact dashboard where you can track your footprint and habits you have been following," said Shravan Boska, founder of the startup based in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Masons Ink focuses on three verticles — sustainable construction , heritage conservation and social architecture. Sridevi Changali, co-founder and principal architect, Masons Ink, believes that it is important to extend the life of buildings to achieve the goal of sustainability. "Buildings that were built 100 or 200 years ago are still standing pretty wonderfully today," she said, adding, one can learn a lot from them. According to her, there's definitely been a tangible increase in the number of inquiries on sustainable construction practices. "There are many takers for mud houses nowadays. Whether it's a trend or whether it's here to stay, we'll see in the next 10 years," she said. Sustainability is the buzzword in art too. Priyanka Thaker, founder of House of Beserk, an art studio, has been conscious of how they package and send their installations. "We are also trying to work with materials like terracotta that come from the earth," said Priyanka. The quest for a fulfilling profession that makes a real difference in the world can lead you to consider a career in early childhood education. This field is not only about teaching young children but also about shaping their futures and laying the foundation for lifelong learning. An early childhood education degree unlocks the door to a world of opportunities where impacting young minds is at the core. Those passionate about contributing to children’s growth and well-being will find this career path both challenging and deeply satisfying. Keep reading to discover how an early childhood education degree can be the first step in a rewarding career journey. Exploring the Scope of Early Childhood Education Degrees An early childhood education degree encompasses a wide array of knowledge and practices geared toward the developmental needs of young children. This discipline covers the spectrum from infancy to primary school, preparing educators to address both academic and social learning. It’s a degree crucial for those aiming to understand child psychology, learning methodologies, and educational philosophies crucial to children’s growth. The curriculum of an early childhood education program generally includes theories of child development, curriculum design, and inclusive practices that cater to diverse student populations. These programs often emphasize experiential learning through practicums or internships, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in the field. The convenience of technology has made higher education more accessible. An online early childhood education degree offers flexibility for those who may not be able to attend traditional classes due to location or time constraints. This modality ensures that even those currently employed or with personal commitments can pursue their educational goals. The Impact of Early Childhood Educators on Child Development Early childhood educators play a pivotal role in child development. They are often among the first adults outside of family members to significantly influence a child’s learning and socialization. As role models, their interaction with children aids in developing trust, curiosity, and a love for learning at a young age. These educators also have the crucial task of identifying and nurturing individual talents, as well as addressing potential learning difficulties. Through their guidance, children learn to navigate social interactions and understand the world around them. The early childhood period is critical for cognitive development, and the educators’ role in this cannot be overemphasized. More than just educators, early childhood professionals are also observers and diagnosticians of children’s developmental stages. They work in collaboration with families and other educational professionals to ensure that children receive the support they need. Positive interactions in early education settings can lay the groundwork for academic success and strong personal development. Required Skills and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators Early childhood educators require a unique set of skills and competencies to effectively nurture and educate young learners. Patience, creativity, and a deep understanding of child development are essential in crafting age-appropriate lessons and managing classroom dynamics. Strong communication skills , both for interacting with children and engaging with parents, are fundamental. Additionally, educators in this field must be adaptable, ready to meet each child’s individual needs, and often tailor their teaching strategies accordingly. This requires a keen sense of observation and the ability to assess developmental milestones. It’s not solely about delivering content but rather facilitating an environment where each child can flourish. A solid grounding in ethical practices and inclusivity is critical for educators working with diverse student populations. It’s also necessary to have the ability to collaborate with other professionals, such as special education teachers or child psychologists, to support children’s holistic development. Advancing Your Early Childhood Education Career: Further Studies and Certifications For professionals in the field of early childhood education, career advancement often involves further studies and earning additional certifications. There are many advanced degrees and specialized training programs available that focus on leadership, administration, and curriculum development. These paths are ideal for those aiming to transition from classroom teaching into managerial or policy-making roles. Obtaining further certifications can specialize educators in niche areas such as special needs education, language acquisition , or STEM early learning programs. These additional credentials not only enhance career prospects but also enrich the educational experiences provided to children. They allow educators to offer a more diversified and effective curriculum. Overall, an early childhood education degree is not only a line on a résumé; it’s a commitment to the well-being and future of children. It’s a choice to embark on a deeply rewarding professional path that leaves a lasting impact on society’s most precious members. Whether through teaching, managing, policymaking, or researching, those who choose this path have the opportunity to truly make a difference.

First and only subcutaneous anti-CD38 therapy demonstrating potential to prevent end-organ damage, and extend progression-free survival and overall survival based on findings from Phase 3 AQUILA study SAN DIEGO , Dec. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) today announced data from the Phase 3 AQUILA study showing that DARZALEX FASPRO ® (daratumumab and hyaluronidase-fihj) significantly delayed progression from high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) to active multiple myeloma (MM) and extended overall survival compared to the current standard of care of active monitoring. 1 The data were presented for the first time as an oral presentation at the 2024 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting ( Abstract #773 ), as part of the Press Program and were selected for the Best of ASH session. In the AQUILA study, 194 patients received DARZALEX FASPRO ® and 196 patients were actively monitored per current standard of care treatment for high-risk SMM. At a median follow-up of 65.2 (range, 0-76.6) months, patients who received DARZALEX FASPRO ® showed statistically significant improved progression-free survival (PFS; defined as progression to active MM as assessed according to International Myeloma working Group (IMWG) diagnostic criteria for MM [SLiM-CRAB] or death) than the active monitoring group; 63.1 percent versus 40.8 percent of patients remained progression-free at 60 months (hazard ratio [HR], 0.49; 95 percent confidence interval [CI], 0.36-0.67; P 1%) injection-site reaction was injection-site erythema. These local reactions occurred a median of 5 minutes (range: 0 minutes to 6.5 days) after starting administration of DARZALEX FASPRO ® . Monitor for local reactions and consider symptomatic management. Neutropenia Daratumumab may increase neutropenia induced by background therapy. Monitor complete blood cell counts periodically during treatment according to manufacturer's prescribing information for background therapies. Monitor patients with neutropenia for signs of infection. Consider withholding DARZALEX FASPRO ® until recovery of neutrophils. In lower body weight patients receiving DARZALEX FASPRO ® , higher rates of Grade 3-4 neutropenia were observed. Thrombocytopenia Daratumumab may increase thrombocytopenia induced by background therapy. Monitor complete blood cell counts periodically during treatment according to manufacturer's prescribing information for background therapies. Consider withholding DARZALEX FASPRO ® until recovery of platelets. Embryo-Fetal Toxicity Based on the mechanism of action, DARZALEX FASPRO ® can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. DARZALEX FASPRO ® may cause depletion of fetal immune cells and decreased bone density. Advise pregnant women of the potential risk to a fetus. Advise females with reproductive potential to use effective contraception during treatment with DARZALEX FASPRO ® and for 3 months after the last dose. The combination of DARZALEX FASPRO ® with lenalidomide, thalidomide, or pomalidomide is contraindicated in pregnant women because lenalidomide, thalidomide, and pomalidomide may cause birth defects and death of the unborn child. Refer to the lenalidomide, thalidomide, or pomalidomide prescribing information on use during pregnancy. Interference With Serological Testing Daratumumab binds to CD38 on red blood cells (RBCs) and results in a positive indirect antiglobulin test (indirect Coombs test). Daratumumab-mediated positive indirect antiglobulin test may persist for up to 6 months after the last daratumumab administration. Daratumumab bound to RBCs masks detection of antibodies to minor antigens in the patient's serum. The determination of a patient's ABO and Rh blood type are not impacted. Notify blood transfusion centers of this interference with serological testing and inform blood banks that a patient has received DARZALEX FASPRO ® . Type and screen patients prior to starting DARZALEX FASPRO ® . Interference With Determination of Complete Response Daratumumab is a human immunoglobulin G (IgG) kappa monoclonal antibody that can be detected on both the serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) and immunofixation (IFE) assays used for the clinical monitoring of endogenous M-protein. This interference can impact the determination of complete response and of disease progression in some DARZALEX FASPRO ® -treated patients with IgG kappa myeloma protein. ADVERSE REACTIONS In multiple myeloma, the most common adverse reaction (≥20%) with DARZALEX FASPRO ® monotherapy is upper respiratory tract infection. Insurtech startups that wanted to change the way India buys insurance seem to have fallen back on the tried and tested model. The likes of Policybazaar had built a business around selling insurance virtually, instead of relying on agents to sell insurance policies through doorstep visits. But this same crop of players is now setting up an army of field agents, or point-of-sales personnel, to sell insurance products. Policybazaar has around 250,000 physical agents, and according to the results of its parent PB Fintech , the Gurugram-based insurance aggregator posted nearly Rs 400 crore of revenue from this business in the quarter ended September 30. InsuranceDekho , another major player in this segment has more than 200,000 agents on the ground. The business has grown too, with the company which is set to acquire smaller rival Renewbuy reporting total revenue of Rs 743 crore for the financial year 2024 with a net profit of Rs 85 crore. Mumbai-based Turtlemint claims to have around 400,000 physical agents. Insurance companies had 700,000 agents in the same time frame. The regulator has yet to release the figures for FY24. We have also built technology which has made it easier for our agents to manage these policies and to service their clients,” said Turtlemint cofounder Anand Prabhudesai. ETtech The challenging part While the insurtech industry has been growing at a fast speed, there are challenges of sustainability around this growth rate. Industry insiders pointed out that the physical distribution business is primarily a volume-led business with margins being squeezed due to aggressive competition. PB Fintech group chief executive officer Yashish Dahiya, while addressing the company’s September quarter analyst call, spoke about business sustainability. “A confident market leader who's a marathon runner has to be countercyclical. He does not start sprinting just because some kids are sprinting for 5 kms; he waits (for) them to tire out. When they tire out, he tells them that you're tired, and I'm going fast now,” he said. For a business which is generating almost 40% of the revenue for a group like PB Fintech, why is the insurance veteran taking a contrarian stance — that he doesn’t want to grow very fast by burning cash. “Growth of agents in this sector is being achieved through offers of lucrative commissions mostly; add to that a technology stack which can help them manage sales and on-time pay-outs of commissions,” said an insurtech founder on the condition of anonymity. While competition among well-funded players means higher pay-outs to business partners and perhaps better deals for the consumers, there are questions about whether it is helping insurance penetration in the country or are brokers eating into the agent network of insurers with promises of lofty pay-outs? Industry insiders pointed out that the average commission paid to the field agent has gone up significantly and it could eventually hurt insurance companies. Motor commissions which should have been around 15% have shot up to around 30% and life and health commissions can go as high as 45%, they said. Also, insurance brokers are paying higher commissions to the agent by dipping into their own share of the revenue in some cases, which raises questions of sustainability in the long run, the insurtech founder cited earlier said. "The strategy for us is to go deep into the country where you can make more money per insurance sale, beyond tier one two cities, we are getting around 80% of our business from tier two cities and beyond and around 60% from tier three and beyond," said Ankit Agrawal, chief executive officer, InsuranceDekho. Regulatory scrutiny The question around brokers’ commissions and the aggression in this agent-driven market did attract regulatory attention. This question was raised last year in the Regulations Review Committee of the IRDAI, which suggested that agents be allowed to work only with insurers and intermediaries be allowed to sell insurance only through their on-roll employees. The Insurance Brokers Association had defended the role played by brokers in taking insurance to the masses. According to it, by offering choices from multiple insurance companies, they were actually helping customers get better products with a higher degree of clarity on the products. The committee’s proposal, though debated last year, seems to have been put on the backburner as of now. So the question that remains is the financial viability of these businesses. “We have stayed away from higher pay-outs to agents, we want them to work with us for our technology stack and timely pay-outs, we want to be seen as a reliable partner,” Prabhudesai of Turtlemint commented. Even PB Fintech’s Dahiya at the September analyst call pointed out that this business would never make a lot of money for his company in terms of margin percentage, but at scale it would have a significant contribution to the overall business. The wild card in all of this is Bima Sugam , the IRDAI’s attempt to create a digital public infrastructure which can connect all insurance companies through a common technology platform. If turned into a reality and at scale, it could play a significant role in stabilising prices and competition in the insurance distribution market. “As of now we are yet to see any significant achievement on that front. While insurance companies will love to have a regulator-managed online platform, the amount of capital required and the efforts needed will be huge and it will be a test for the sector to come together to build it,” said one of the founders. The Business Standard newspaper wrote on November 24 that the capital requirement for this platform has shot up to Rs 500 crore, significantly higher than previously anticipated. So whether it is an IRDAI order to restrict brokers from appointing agents, or an industry initiative to democratise technology or high burn which results in ultimate slowdown in growth, the fast growing insurance distribution industry needs to grapple with many challenges. In the meantime, every player is looking to build its own business moats, either through a war chest of venture dollars or through a network of possibly loyal agents. No systematic attack on minorities Hindu leader arrested on specific charges Bangladesh tells UN forum5 Of The Worst F1 Cars In History

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Celta Vigo gave 10-man Barcelona a shock by scoring two late goals and snatching a 2-2 draw at home in the Spanish league on Saturday. Barcelona was minutes away from a win to pad its league lead after Raphinha and Lewandowski had put Barcelona in control. But the game dramatically swung after Barcelona defensive midfielder Marc Casadó was sent off with a second booking in the 81st. Moments later Jules Koundé’s poor control of a ball in his area allowed Alfon González to pick his pocket and give the hosts hope in the 84th minute. Celta poured forward at Balaidos Stadium and Hugo Álvarez rifled in the 86th-minute equalizer with Barcelona unable to mark the extra man.
