Council will vote on a motion to further reduce the cost of a senior monthly pass as councillors meet Wednesday to approve the 2025 City of Ottawa budget. The motion moved by councillors Riley Brockington and supported by Jessica Bradley proposes to make the cost of a seniors' monthly pass increase from $49 to $58.25 per month starting in January 2025. City staff had previously proposed a 120 per cent increase in the cost for a pass in the 2025 draft budget, from $49 to $108, but public backlash led councillors to lessen the increase to $78.50 at the last Transit Commission meeting . The proposed rate for an adult monthly pass is $135 with the seniors price being a 57 per cent discount on the regular rate. The approximately $9 increase for seniors would align the cost with the price of an EquiPass, which provides discounted fares for low-income households. Transit Commission chair Glen Gower anticipates the motion will be supported by councillors. "Our big concern was we wanted to make sure that if there's lower income seniors out there, that they have access to a deeply discounted pass without having to go through a lot of bureaucracy," he told Newstalk 580 CFRA's Kristy Cameron on Tuesday afternoon. "This is the compromise that we've ended up with for tomorrow." The motion proposes paying for the discount with an offsetting of $820,000 to the transit capital reserve, budgeted at $63.5 million, and through an increase to the transit levy of 0.11 per cent, or about 94 cents per urban household. The proposal also calls for council to direct city staff to work with school boards and the Ministry of Education to explore the feasibility of the development of a U-Pass for students under 18-years-old, a program that provides discounted fares to post-secondary students. The city still plans eliminate free transit for 11- and 12-year-olds and will be doing away with discounted youth transit fare for 13- to 18-year-olds, requiring riders to get an adult transit fare. University students have raised concerns about the city's plans to increase the cost of the U-Pass five per cent in 2025, hiking the price from $229 to $240 a semester. Universities had said the proposal was a violation of their allowable increase of 2.5 per cent per year for the program. A motion by Coun. Menard at the last Transit Commission meeting to direct staff to enter into consultations with the four affected post-secondary institutions' administration and students was approved unanimously. Staff are directed to report back with results by the end of June 2025. The U-Pass would stay at the regular 2.5 per cent increase at the start of the spring semester but students are still set to see a 5 per cent increase at the start of the fall semester, according to Gower. OC Transpo faces a $120 million in its budget a year over the next three years. Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe had previously said "tough decisions on how to fund transit" had to be made, including transit fare hikes and funding more efficiencies. The 2025 budget includes a $36 million placeholder for possible funding from upper levels of government for public transit. The budget includes across the board increases for transit, including a 5 per cent increase for the cost of a single adult ride. If approved, a single-ride adult fare would increase to $4.00, the fourth highest in the county. Councillors will meet Wednesday to approve the final $5 billion city budget, which is set to include a 3.9 per cent property tax increase for most residents. New Delhi: Sales of passenger vehicles are expected to grow by 5% in calendar year 2025 against a high base, indicating healthy consumer demand on the back of a pick-up in government spending, good monsoon rain and strong consumer sentiment in rural markets due to robust crop yields, several senior industry executives ET spoke to said. While sales of SUVs will remain strong, carmakers expect demand for entry-level small cars to rise as indicated by a spurt in two-wheeler sales in recent months. After six months of slow growth in this fiscal year, car sales grew by about 1% in October and 4% in November. Passenger vehicle sales grew by 3% in the first quarter. In fact, India is one of the few markets globally where auto sales have rebounded sharply post the pandemic. That pushed car sales over the 4-million mark for the first time in 2023, and then again in 2024. With the Saints outside of the playoff bubble and Derek Carr likely out for the year, Kamara's workload will likely steadily decline in the coming weeks. Just last week, Kamara ceded 11 opportunities to second-year back Kendre Miller. With Jake Haener at quarterback, Kamara will be provided with very few scoring opportunities and will almost exclusively rely on receiving work to get there in fantasy. All signs point to Kamara disappointing fantasy managers more often than not down the stretch this season. Williams: Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns — While it's been great to see Nick Chubb come back healthy this year and not miss any additional time once he returned, his performance on the field has been predictably sub-par. Averaging just 3.1 yards per carry this season, Chubb also has only three rushing touchdowns in seven games. And this week Cleveland gets the Chiefs who are giving up the fewest points to running backs in the entire league. On top of that, Jerome Ford is basically in a full-blown timeshare with Chubb right now. This is a backfield to stay away from. Iyer: Rachaad White, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — With Bucky Irving hurting, White should take a bigger lead role over Sean Tucker against the Chargers, but the matchup is brutal, as the Chargers shut down KC's running game last week. Expect to be disappointed with the workload and the likelihood of White not scoring. Fantasy WR Busts Week 15 O'Hara: Jakobi Meyers, Las Vegas Raiders — Across the last six weeks, Jakobi Meyers ranks 7th among wide receivers in targets per game. This sort of volume is enough to make any receiver intriguing in fantasy, but when the quarterback delivering those passes is set to be Desmond Ridder, the intrigue quickly fades. Ridder entered the game for Aidan O'Connell last week and didn't look great, averaging just 5.6 yards per attempt. Hitching your wagon to Ridder during the fantasy playoffs isn't the best idea. Williams: Michael Pittman, Indianapolis Colts — It's been a bit of a struggle all season for Michael Pittman, and facing a tough Denver secondary this week won't change his fortunes. Pittman has only one 100+ yard receiving game, and that was all the way back in Week 4. He did secure five catches last week, but they only went for 42 yards. Given Anthony Richardson's accuracy issues, this isn't a good matchup for Colts pass-catchers. Iyer: DK Metcalf, Seattle Seahawks — There's been something off in his chemistry with Geno Smith, who is feeding Jaxon Smith-Njigba a ton and also taking more shots to Tyler Lockett. Metcalf runs into a tough secondary matchup with the Packers, who have remained stingy since letting A.J. Brown get loose in Week 1. Fantasy TE Busts Week 15 O'Hara: Cade Otton, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — For much of his career, Cade Otton has been a Cardio King. He runs plenty of routes without drawing many targets. He briefly shed that reputation but has since reclaimed it following the return of Mike Evans. Otton has drawn more than four targets in just one of three games with Evans back on the field. At this point, Otton seems to be falling back into the touchdown-or-bust tier of tight ends. Williams: Jonnu Smith, Miami Dolphins — This is definitely a risky fade as Jonnu Smith has been one of the game's best tight ends over the last several weeks. Until the last couple of weeks, it looked like Smith may have surpassed Jaylen Waddle in the Dolphins' target tree. But Waddle has come on of late, and Smith finished with three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown, but all of that production came in overtime as he was held scoreless in regulation. On top of that, they face the Texans this week, and Houston gives up the 4th-fewest points to tight ends. Iyer: Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers — He's been hot in fine matchups, but the Eagles are tougher on the tight end position, so this week it's more of a touchdown or bust game for him with limited yardage and catches in store. Fantasy Defense Busts Week 15 O'Hara: Houston Texans — Tua Tagovailoa has the Miami offense back to their 2023 form in recent weeks. In required overtime against the Jets, but the Dolphins have scored 30-plus points in three of their last four games. They'll play the Texans (indoors) this week and should pull out all the stops in a crucial AFC matchup. Think twice before starting the Texans this week. Williams: Pittsburgh Steelers — The Eagles beat the Panthers last week 22-16, but you'd never know it from all of the headlines about A.J. Brown beefing with Jalen Hurts over the shortcomings of the passing game. Typically when A.J. Brown is unhappy, he gets fed. He also has had 12 catches for 309 yards and four touchdowns in two games versus the Steelers in his career. Prior to this week, the team was looking much closer to the team that went to the Super Bowl in '22 than the team that collapsed in '23. Pittsburgh could be in for a long day at The Linc. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Technically, the standings still show the Pittsburgh Steelers atop the AFC North. It just doesn't exactly feel that way at the moment. While the Steelers still have everything in front of them even after a 34-17 loss in Baltimore on Saturday in which a pair of Russell Wilson turnovers and a battered defense starting to show signs of wear allowed the Ravens to pull away, the grasp they had on the division two weeks ago is now far more tenuous. There were no excuses offered afterward. Yet there's also no time to pout either. Not with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs visiting Acrisure Stadium on Christmas Day. “The one thing I’m not going to do is keep my head down," Wilson said shortly after a fourth-quarter pick-6 allowed Baltimore to pull away. "I know for us, we got so much great confidence in who we are and what we can do and how we’re going to respond.” If Pittsburgh wants the home playoff game that capturing a division title for the first time since 2020 would provide, it doesn't really have a choice. To do it, the Steelers will likely have to beat the two-time defending Super Bowl champions on three days' rest and then the Bengals in the regular-season finale, not exactly ideal opponents for an injury-marred defense that has given up more than 400 yards in consecutive weeks for the first time since the first three games of the 2019 season. Beating Philadelphia and Baltimore on the road even in the best of times is a tough ask. The Steelers came up empty twice in six days, and while Wilson's turnovers didn’t help, Pittsburgh’s inability to match up with either team in the trenches could be a far bigger problem going forward if it can't find a way to regain the physicality it showed earlier this season. True, the Ravens and Eagles have the two best running games in the league led by backs who are putting together Hall of Fame resumes. Still, every team the Steelers figure to face in the postseason will almost certainly try to follow the blueprint Philadelphia and Baltimore used so effectively. Pittsburgh's truncated schedule — the visit by the Chiefs will be its third game in 11 days — means the tackling issues that have popped up of late will have to be addressed more in theory than in practice. It's a less-than-ideal situation. Yet despite the step or two back recently, the Steelers believe that everything they want to do this season is still in front of them. That's certainly true. Wilson — who knows a thing or two about winning this time of year — remains upbeat. “We can’t let a tough game like this take us into a negative state of mind because there’s a lot more to play for and a lot more we’re searching for, and we can still win the (AFC) North,” he said. "There’s still a lot of opportunity there, too, as well. And so we just got to buckle down and get back to work.” What's working Being disruptive in the red zone. Minkah Fitzpatrick's fourth-quarter pick of Lamar Jackson — his first in 26 games — was the fifth takeaway by the Steelers inside their 20 this season, tied for second most in the NFL. What needs help Just about everything else in the red zone. The Steelers allowed Baltimore to score touchdowns on its first three drives that reached the Pittsburgh 20. The other two ended with Fitzpatrick's interception and a chip-shot field goal by Justin Tucker in the final minutes. Two short touchdown throws from Jackson to tight ends Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews bothered Steelers coach Mike Tomlin the most. “It is just too late in the year to have guys running open like that, to be quite honest with you," Tomlin said. “So we’ve got some work to do this week and try to shore some of that up.” Stock up Calvin Austin III is the only wide receiver who seems capable of being a difference-maker with George Pickens out of the lineup. The 5-foot-9 Austin has nine receptions for 130 yards over the past two games, and while Wilson's fourth down heave to Austin at the goal line in the third quarter fell incomplete, it also symbolized the faith Wilson has in a highly motivated player who thrives on being underestimated. Stock down Complementary football. The Steelers surged to the top of the division by having a team that thrived in all three phases. That hasn't happened of late. The Ravens turned Wilson's fumble into a 96-yard touchdown drive. Fitzpatrick's interception appeared to give the Steelers momentum only to have Wilson give it right back with a poor throw that Marlon Humphrey turned into the clinching score. Injuries Pickens could return from the hamstring injury that has forced him to miss the past three games. Safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring), defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (groin), cornerback Donte Jackson (back) could also play after sitting out against Baltimore. The news isn’t as positive for starting cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (knee) and wide receiver Ben Skowronek (hip), both of whom left against the Ravens and did not return. He is again expected to be one of the hottest HC candidates in the upcoming cycle, though he will remain highly selective about his destination. Given the Bears’ abundance of salary cap space, skill position talent and the presence of talented rookie-contract QB Caleb Williams , it is easy to see why they believe their HC post is the most desirable among those that are expected to be available in 2025. The attractiveness of the job in a vacuum is one thing, but a November report suggested that Johnson may steer clear of the Bears due to perceived organizational dysfunction. However, subsequent reports noted that Johnson may indeed consider the Chicago gig , and today, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network said that the 38-year-old offensive guru is “intrigued” by the position and is willing to listen to the Bears’ pitch. As we had previously heard that Johnson is not going to interview simply for the sake of interviewing, any summit he conducts with Bears brass would seemingly indicate that he is prepared to accept the job if offered. While the Bears have been said to be prioritizing a “leader of men” type of head coach over a candidate with a specific background, Johnson’s reputation as an offensive mastermind is not only in keeping with the trend in today’s HC searches, but it would be especially beneficial to a team looking to unlock the potential of a blue chip prospect like Williams. And, despite turning down what was generally regarded as a similarly appealing post with the Commanders in the 2024 hiring period, Johnson reiterated that he wants to take a team’s top job at some point. “I think there’s a burning desire in every man to find what he’s made out of and push the limits and see if he’s got what it takes,” Johnson said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press . “And so yeah, there’s a fire there. Now, when that time is? I don’t know when that’ll be, but there’s certainly a fire there.” When asked specifically about Williams, Johnson was complimentary but conceded that he had not really studied the rookie’s tape. “Listen, it’s been difficult to sit down and just study every throw but plenty of crossover tape over the course of the year and there’s no question this guy’s talented,” Johnson said. “I remember standing on the sideline last game and just you can hear the ball whistle by you. He’s got quite a fastball and has some creativity to him, can extend plays and is accurate down the field as well. Like I said, I haven’t really dove in and can tell you much more beyond that, but he’s been impressive from afar.” Whether Johnson finally decides to move on from Detroit will be perhaps the top question when it comes to the 2025 HC carousel.
