Pope Francis kicks off a yearlong Jubilee that will test his stamina and Rome's patience VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has opened the great Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. The ceremony kicks off the 2025 Holy Year. It's a celebration of the Catholic Church that is expected to draw some 32 million pilgrims to Rome. And it will test the pope’s stamina and the ability of the Eternal City to welcome them. This begins the Christmas Eve Mass. The ceremony inaugurates the once-every-25-year tradition of a Jubilee. Francis has dedicated the 2025 Jubilee to the theme of hope. Bethlehem marks a second subdued Christmas Eve during the war in Gaza BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Bethlehem is marking another somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of war in Gaza. Manger Square lacked its usual festive lights and crowds of tourists on Tuesday. Instead, the area outside the Nativity Church was quiet. The church was built atop the spot where Jesus is believed to have been born. The war, the violence in the occupied West Bank it has spurred and the lack of festivities has deeply hurt Bethlehem's economy. The town relies heavily on Christmas tourism. The economy in the West Bank was already reeling because of restrictions placed on laborers preventing them from entering Israel during the war. Heavy travel day starts with brief grounding of all American Airlines flights WASHINGTON (AP) — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne Tuesday about one hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop, which prevented planes from taking off. American said in an email that the problem was caused by an issue with a vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. Aviation analytics company Cirium said flights were delayed across American’s major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time. Nineteen flights were cancelled. Middle East latest: Israel expels patients from a hospital in Gaza TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli soldiers raided a hospital in isolated northern Gaza after forcing all the patients and most of the doctors to leave. The Israeli military confirmed its troops had entered the Indonesian Hospital in the town of Jabaliya on Tuesday, as part of an operation searching for Hamas fighters. Winter is hitting the Gaza Strip and many of the nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced by the devastating 15-month war are struggling to protect themselves from the wind, cold and rain. In the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian city of Bethlehem was marking a somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of war in Gaza, with most festivities cancelled and crowds of tourists absent. She led Iowa to the national championship game, was the top pick in the WNBA draft and captured rookie of the year honors in the league. Fans packed sold-out arenas and millions of television viewers followed her journey on and off the court. Clark's exploits also put other women's sports leagues in the spotlight. A group of 74 sports journalists from AP and its members voted on the award. Other athletes who received votes included Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and boxer Imane Khelif. Clark’s only the fourth women’s basketball player to win the award since it was first given in 1931. Major storm pounds California's central coast, blamed for man's death and partially collapsing pier SANTA CRUZ, Calif. The storm was expected to bring hurricane-force winds and waves up to 60 feet Monday as it gained strength from California to the Pacific Northwest. Some California cities have ordered beachfront homes and hotels to evacuate early Monday afternoon. Forecasters have warned that storm swells would continue to increase throughout the day. Medellin Cartel victims demand truth and justice as cartel boss Fabio Ochoa walks free in Colombia BOGOTÁ, Colombia (AP) — The return of the notorious drug trafficker Fabio Ochoa to Colombia, following his deportation from the United States, has reopened old wounds among the victims of the Medellin cartel, with some expressing their dismay at the decision of Colombian authorities to let the former mafia boss walk free. Some of the cartel victims said on Tuesday that they are hoping the former drug lord will at least cooperate with ongoing efforts by human rights groups to investigate one of the most violent periods of Colombia’s history, and demanded that Colombian prosecutors also take Ochoa in for questioning. Man arraigned on murder charges in NYC subway death fanned flames with a shirt, prosecutors say NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors say a man accused of burning a woman to death inside a New York City subway train used a shirt to fan the flames, causing her to become engulfed. The suspect, identified by police as Sebastian Zapeta, was arraigned in Brooklyn criminal court on Tuesday. He faces murder charges that could put him in prison for life. Federal immigration officials say 33-year-old Zapeta is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally after being deported in 2018. The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on a stationary F train at the Coney Island station in Brooklyn. Amsterdam court sentences 5 men over violence linked to Ajax-Maccabi soccer game THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — An Amsterdam District Court has issued sentences of up to six months in jail against 5 men who were involved in violent disorder after a soccer match between the Dutch club Ajax and Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv in November. The riots caused an international outcry and accusations of deliberate anti-Semitic attacks. The violence following a UEFA Europa League match left 5 people in hospital. More than 60 suspects were detained. The court on Tuesday sentenced one man to 6 months in prison, another to 2 1/2 months, two to 1 month and one to 100 hours of community service.

Image credit: Canva Elon Musk wants Mars to be renamed as " New World ". The SpaceX and Tesla CEO shared this idea while drawing a parallel to the historical naming of America. In a post on social media platform X (earlier Twitter), the world’s richest man shared his idea and a photo of the Red planet’s Gale Crater captured by the Curiosity rover. Previously, Musk has shared his vision to transform Mars into a self-sufficient backup planet for humans and make our species a multi-planetary one. Take a look at the new post here Sharing the post, Musk wrote: “Mars will be called the “New World”, just as America was in past centuries. Such an inspiring adventure!” The post has received over 55 million views and over 1.3 lakh likes. Musk’s vision of Mars colonisation Earlier this month, Musk addressed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson's critique of his Mars colonisation plans. Defending his concept on X, the billionaire highlighted the importance of creating a self-sustaining human settlement on Mars, viewing it as critical for humanity's long-term survival. Musk’s remarks followed Tyson’s dismissal of Mars colonisation concepts during a discussion on Bill Maher’s talk show, where the scientist argued that the initiative lacks tangible returns on investment and suggested that resources would be better directed toward addressing urgent issues on Earth. Responding to the criticism, Musk wrote that establishing a significant human presence on Mars could protect the species from existential threats on Earth and ensure the continuity of humans. Musk-led SpaceX continues to develop technologies aimed at transporting humans to Mars and supporting the infrastructure for such a settlement. Earlier this month, researchers at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad discovered evidence of the possible existence of ancient microbial life on Mars. Their study, published in JGR Planet, highlights chloride-rich depressions in the Terra Sirenum region, which likely experienced repeated wetting and drying cycles, making them potentially habitable.ATLANTA — On Jan. 18 and 19 the AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! will be held at State Farm Arena in advance of the College Football Playoff national championship on Jan. 20. KUWAIT: The “Kuwait Seeks Your Well-being” donation drive concluded on Sunday after a three-day run at the Lebanese Embassy in Kuwait. Donations poured into the embassy from day one, including medicine, medical supplies, and essential items for women and children. “Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference,” Lebanese Charge d’Affaires in Kuwait Ahmad Arafa said in a statement. He added that the Zionist entity’s military attack on Lebanon systematically targeted villages and towns throughout the country, resulting in widespread devastation. “The destruction exceeds 150,000 residential units, leaving approximately 700,000 people displaced in shelters or rented homes across the country,” said Arafa. He praised the Lebanese community in Kuwait for proving their reliability and generosity by volunteering and donating and thanked the numerous Kuwaiti volunteers who also joined the campaign. “This reflects the strong bond and appreciation shared between our peoples for decades.” Assistant Foreign Minister for Development and International Cooperation Ambassador Hamad Al-Mashaan praised the efforts of the embassy’s team, the Lebanese community, and other residents, including Kuwaiti volunteers, in preparing aid that will soon be sent to Lebanon. He indicated that Kuwait has already sent six military aircraft to Lebanon, carrying 180 tons of medical supplies. On the mechanism for delivering aid, he emphasized: “The Lebanese Red Cross and Red Crescent will oversee the distribution of aid. Previous donations were handed over to the Lebanese government, which provided Kuwait with a list of the population’s urgent needs. All procedures were transparent and adhered to the correct legal channels, ensuring the embassy obtained the necessary approvals.” Ambassador Ahmad Abdulrahman Al-Baker, Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab World Affairs, reaffirmed Kuwait’s support for Lebanon. “Kuwait has previously welcomed the ceasefire initiative, and we hope this will be a step toward a lasting and sustainable peace. We support all international efforts under the United Nations umbrella to implement and advance this decision, particularly Resolution 1701, which aims to restore calm and stability in Lebanon,” he said. He highlighted the Kuwait Declaration penned by leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on December 1, 2024, as an example of the GCC’s solidarity with Lebanon. “During the GCC Summit, we witnessed the clear stance expressed by the leaders of the GCC in support of Lebanon and its political process. Furthermore, Kuwait’s efforts within the Arab League, whether through ministerial meetings or its representative in the League, continue to support Lebanon and Palestine alike.” He indicated Kuwait’s unwavering commitment to all decisions issued by the Arab League and the GCC aimed at upholding Lebanon’s independence while rejecting interference in its internal affairs. He affirmed that the solution in Lebanon must be political, leading to the desired stability Al-Baker emphasized the longstanding affection and mutual respect shared between Kuwait and Lebanon. “We Kuwaitis have always held a special affection for Lebanon, which is evident through our visits there or in our warm reception of Lebanese residents in Kuwait. The Lebanese, in turn, express their appreciation and gratitude for this relationship. We hope this bond and harmony between the two peoples will continue to thrive.” Tajikistan Ambassador to Kuwait and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Zubaydullo Zubaydov expressed his solidarity with Lebanon, praising Kuwait’s humanitarian efforts and highlighting the global recognition of Kuwait’s contributions to various causes. Zubaydov announced plans for Tajikistan to launch a relief initiative to support Lebanon. “This campaign, a testament to human compassion and solidarity, once again underscores the enduring ties between Kuwait and Lebanon and the commitment to global humanitarian efforts,” he said. Mia Al-Adem, Consul and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Lebanon, expressed her admiration for the Lebanese people’s collective spirit during challenging times. “Today’s scene is heartwarming and demonstrates the Lebanese people’s love for their homeland, reflecting national unity beyond political divides. Everyone has come together to answer the call of duty,” she said. She extended gratitude to the volunteers, the Lebanese Business Council, and the Lebanese Women’s Council in Kuwait for their support. She also thanked Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other authorities for facilitating the campaign, describing Kuwait as “the land of generosity, humanity, and brotherhood.” Al-Adem said the campaign was a collective effort that would bring relief to countless children and families in Lebanon. All donated items would be shipped to Beirut for distribution by the Lebanese government’s Emergency Committee in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health and the High Relief Commission, she added. The archbishop of Paris re-opened Notre Dame cathedral on Saturday (December 7, 2024) by symbolically knocking on the doors and entering the 12th-century landmark which has been restored after a devastating fire in 2019. Wearing new designer vestments and carrying a staff cut from one of the roof beams that survived the inferno, Laurent Ulrich joined hundreds of VIPs inside the Gothic masterpiece for a two-hour ceremony. Ulrich commanded the cathedral to "open your doors" and he entered the magnificently-restored edifice. US President-elect Donald Trump sat on the front row as guest of honour next to French President Emmanuel Macron, with invitees marvelling at the freshly cleaned walls, new furniture and state-of-the-art lightening installed as part of the cathedral's overhaul. Outside, small crowds of Parisians and tourists braved wet weather and high winds to witness the renaissance of a beloved monument which came close to being totally destroyed by the inferno that toppled its roof and spire. "I find it really beautiful, even more so now that the spire has been restored," Marie Jean, a 27-year-old dentist from southwest France, told AFP outside. The reconstruction effort has cost around 700 million euros ($750 million), financed from donations, with the re-opening achieved within a five-year deadline set by Macron despite predictions it could take decades. Workers had to overcome problems with lead pollution, the Covid-19 epidemic, and the army general overseeing the project falling to his death while hiking in the Pyrenees last year. It is "a cathedral like we have never seen before," Philippe Jost, who took over as project manager last year, told Franceinfo radio, adding that he was proud to "show the whole world" a "great collective success and a source of pride for all of France". Saturday's service will feature prayer, organ music and hymns from the cathedral's choir. A public concert planned in front of the cathedral featuring Chinese piano virtuoso Lang Lang and possibly US singer and fashion designer Pharrell Williams had to be pre-recorded on Friday night because of the stormy weather. Restoring a symbol of Paris Held up as an example of French creativity and resilience by Mr. Macron, Notre Dame's renaissance so soon after the fire comes at a difficult time for the country. The sense of national accomplishment in restoring a symbol of Paris has been undercut by political turmoil that has left France without a proper government since last week when prime minister Michel Barnier lost a confidence vote. Macron is hoping the re-opening might provide a fleeting sense of national pride and unity -- as the Paris Olympics did in July and August. The scale of the immense security operation also recalls the Olympics -- with some 6,000 police officers and gendarmes mobilised. The re-opening "is the proof that we know how to do grand things, we know how to do the impossible" Macron said Thursday in a televised address to the country. He is set to address the congregation during Saturday's ceremony. Another 40 heads of state and government are also present, including Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, who was given a round of applause as he entered Notre Dame, as well as British heir to the throne, Prince William. Mr. Macron hosted three-way talks with Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Trump at the presidential palace shortly before the ceremony, with future US military support for Ukraine's war effort against Russia's invasion expected to have been discussed. Mr. Trump has vowed to force an end to the nearly three-year Ukraine war when he takes office, sparking fears in Kyiv that he will force Ukraine to make territorial concessions to Russia which Zelensky is resisting. "It seems like the world is going a little crazy right now and we will be talking about that," Trump told reporters as he prepared to sit down for talks with Macron. One surprising absentee on Saturday was Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church. He sent a message addressed to the French people which is set to be read out. The exact cause of the 2019 blaze has never been identified despite a forensic investigation by prosecutors, who believe an accident such as an electrical fault was the most likely reason. On Sunday, the first mass with 170 bishops and more than 100 Paris priests will take place at 10:30 am (0930 GMT), followed by a second service in the evening at 6:30 pm which will be open to the public. (AP) — For a pair of lower-level downhill events, this sure had plenty of Olympic medal-capturing and World Cup-winning ski racers. The stage belonged to Lindsey Vonn , the 40-year-old who took another step on her comeback trail Saturday with her first races in nearly six years. Vonn wasn't particularly speedy and finished in the middle of the pack on a cold but sunny day at Copper Mountain. Times and places weren't the mission, though, as much as getting used to the speed again and gaining the necessary points to compete on the World Cup circuit this season. Vonn accomplished both, finishing 24th in the first downhill race of the day and 27th in the second. She posted on social media after the FIS races that she had enough points to enter World Cup events. The timing couldn't be more perfect — the next stop on the women's circuit is Beaver Creek, Colorado, in a week. Vonn, who used to own a home in nearby Vail, hasn't committed to any sort of timetable for a World Cup return. “Today was a solid start and I had a blast being in start with my teammates again!” Vonn wrote on X . “While I’m sure people will speculate and say I’m not in top form because of the results, I disagree. This was training for me. I’m still testing equipment and getting back in the groove.” Her competition — a veritable who's who of high-profile ski racers — applauded her efforts. “I don't expect her to come back and win — just that she comes back and she has fun,” said Federica Brignone of Italy, a former overall World Cup champion and three-time Olympic medalist. “She's having fun, and she’s doing what she loves. That’s the best thing that she could do.” In the first race on a frigid morning, Vonn wound up 1.44 seconds behind the winning time of 1 minute, 5.79 seconds posted by Mirjam Puchner of Austria. In her second race through the course later in the morning, Vonn was 1.53 seconds behind Cornelia Huetter of Austria, who finished in 1:05.99. Huetter is the reigning season-long World Cup downhill champion. “It’s really nice to compare with her again, and nice to have her (racing) again,” Huetter said. “For sure, for the skiing World Cup, we have a lot of more attention. It's generally good for all racers because everyone is looking.” Also in the field were Nadia Delago of Italy, who won a bronze medal in downhill at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and Puchner, the Olympic silver winner in super-G in Beijing. In addition, there was Marta Bassino of Italy, a winner of the super-G at the 2023 world championships, and two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin of Switzerland. “For me, it was really a training, but it was fun to have a World Cup race level right here,” Gisin said. “It was a crazy race.” Vonn remains a popular figure and took the time after each run to sign autographs for young fans along with posing for photos. When she left the sport, Vonn had 82 World Cup race victories, which stood as the record for a woman and within reach of the all-time Alpine record of 86 held by Swedish standout Ingemar Stenmark. The women’s mark held by Vonn was surpassed in January 2023 by Mikaela Shiffrin, who now has 99 wins — more than any Alpine ski racer in the history of the sport. Shiffrin is currently sidelined after a crash in a giant slalom event in Killington, Vermont , last weekend. Vonn’s last major race was in February 2019, when she finished third in a downhill during the world championships in Sweden. The three-time Olympic medalist left the circuit still near the top of her game. But all the broken arms and legs, concussions and torn knee ligaments took too big a toll and sent her into retirement. She had a partial knee replacement last April and felt good enough to give racing another shot. “It's very impressive to see all the passion that Lindsey still has,” Gisin said. Also racing Saturday was 45-year-old Sarah Schleper, who once competed for the United States but now represents Mexico. Schleper was the next racer behind Vonn and they got a chance to share a moment between a pair of 40-somethings still racing. “I was like, ‘Give me some tips, Lindsey,’” Schleper said. “She’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a highway tuck, the whole thing.’ Then she’s like, ‘It’s just like the good old days.’" AP skiing: https://apnews.com/hub/alpine-skiing
