Current
From October 2025 to October 2026, the 29th presentation „Snap out of numbness" is on view, curated by Clara Meister.
With works by Miriam Cahn, José Damasceno, Nicola De Maria, AK Dolven, Jimmie Durham, Dan Flavin, Ellen Gallagher, Carla Guagliardi, Georg Herold, Susan Hiller, Rebecca Horn, Kimsooja, Astrid Klein, Richard Long, Teresa Murak, Bruce Nauman, Ernesto Neto, Chris Newman, Gabriel Orozco, Eduardo Paolozzi, Irving Penn, Sigmar Polke, SUSI POP, Arnulf Rainer, Pipilotti Rist, Jenny Saville, Marike Schuurman, Ettore Spalletti, Nancy Spero, Wolfgang Tillmans, Marijke van Warmerdam, Andy Warhol and Franz West.
The installation engages with simultaneously existing, yet contradictory states. Triggered by situations, images or news, they oscillate between tangible reality and abstract future possibilities. Something diffuse emerges: things feel overwhelmingly close and yet distant at the same time, while touching with equal intensity. Powerlessness, anger, feeling lost and trapped coexist with hope and optimism.
Outdoor Works
Gunda Förster
Lichträume, 1996
Gunda Förster was born in Berlin in 1967 and studied Fine Art at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1991 to 1997. Since the early 2010s she has lived and worked primarily in Wismar, where she has held the professorship for Art in the Context of Architecture and Design at Wismar University since 2015.
Her artistic work is grounded in the central elements of light, space, movement and time, exploring the interplay between art and everyday life. She understands her site-specific works as a contemporary form of painting and as spaces for the perception of body and space.
During the planning of what would become a public passageway through the Sophie-Gips-Höfe property between Sophien- and Gipsstraße — developed in 1996 — the idea arose to transform the dark passages between the courtyards into coloured light spaces. Inspired by an installation by Förster at the Kunstraum Soma in Kreuzberg, the Hoffmanns developed a concept together with the artist in which each of the three inner passages was assigned a primary colour, while the outer passages were designed in cool white to create a contrast with the yellowish street lighting.
The project used exclusively standard commercial fluorescent tubes in standard colours and lengths. The installation was realised by electricians and painters working from Förster’s drawings.
Thomas Locher
Entweder/Oder, 1996
The conceptual artist Thomas Locher was born in Munderkingen in 1956. Many of his works engage with language and signs, and the structures of power, authority and hierarchy inscribed within them. Since the 1980s he has been deeply engaged with text-image constructions.
The wall work “Either/Or,” a commissioned piece for the Sophie-Gips-Höfe, is a characteristic example of his language-based works. The piece addresses the effects of Western dialectics — still palpable in the formerly divided Berlin — and invites viewers to question familiar alternatives and criteria for decision-making.
The title refers to Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophical work Either/Or, which he wrote in Berlin in response to Hegelian dialectics. While Western thinking is based on an “either/or,” Asian philosophies contemplate the simultaneous coexistence of opposites: healthy and unhealthy, for example, exist in parallel. Locher’s wall work thus also reflects the dialectic of East and West. The work guides the viewer’s gaze from bottom to top, allowing the courtyard to be experienced not merely as a passageway but as a consciously perceivable, three-dimensional space. The wall itself is a remnant wall: the recess in the brick cladding indicates that a part of the building once stood there but was later destroyed. The precise history remains unclear, as the archival architectural records were destroyed in a fire at the building authority.
Laurence Weiner
MILK AND HONEY TAKEN FAR FAR AWAY, 1994/1996
Lawrence Weiner was born in New York in 1942 and died there in 2021. He is considered a key figure of Conceptual Art, which emerged from Minimalism in the 1960s.
In 1968, Weiner created his famous “Declaration of Intent,” which defined his artistic philosophy: the artist may construct the piece, the piece may be fabricated, the piece need not be built — each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist. These principles shaped the understanding of art by declaring the idea to be the actual artwork.
Weiner worked primarily with language as an artistic medium. From the early 1970s onwards he produced works consisting largely of wall installations: pure text works that he himself regarded as sculptures.
At the outset of planning for the Sophie-Gips-Höfe, Erika and Rolf Hoffmann approached Weiner, whom they had come to know better during one of his stays in Cologne, with a commission. After a walk through the Berlin courtyards and subsequent conversations in New York, Weiner proposed a wall work for the “rear side,” on the smooth façade of the upper-level room facing Gipsstraße. He sent a precisely scaled sketch on a single A4 sheet, with the RAL colour numbers of the German flag, which was then applied to the building by sign painters.
Teresa Murak
(Projekt for A) Sculpture For The Earth, 1996
Teresa Murak was born in 1949 in Kiełczewice in the Lublin region and is a significant figure in performance, land and feminist art in Poland. Since the 1970s she has developed an artistic language that uses natural materials — particularly seeds, cress, mud and sourdough — to create what she calls “organic architecture.” Her works explore becoming, growth and decay, both biologically and symbolically.
The concept of “sowing” is fundamental to Murak’s practice, linking performative art with near-ritualistic actions, as seen in her “sowings”: in 1974 she grew cress on a cloak and walked through Warsaw wearing it. In 1975 she sowed cress onto a linen shirt, tended the plants for eleven days, and then put on the “living” shirt as a symbol of the union between human and nature.
Murak works with gentle and modest methods, and regards plants as relics of paradise that hold the secret of silence.
The commissioned work “(Project for A) Sculpture For The Earth” in the courtyard of the Sophie-Gips-Höfe is a sloping grass trapezoid, half emerging from the earth and half set into it. Murak took her orientation from a star map — the form represents a constellation projected onto the earth’s surface. She also understands triangles as symbols of fertility, as they are read in different cultures. For Murak they also represent self-knowledge. The triangle connects three sides, just as three factors must come together for complete understanding: the one who knows, the thing known, and the knowledge itself.
