Open Call

Write With Sophie Gips

As part of TIME WITH SOPHIE GIPS, we invite applications for the newly established writing fellowship WRITE WITH SOPHIE GIPS.

Who can apply?

We are offering a grant to a young writer who will develop their own texts based on conversations with this year's three artist fellowship recipients.

The open call is aimed at writers at the beginning of their professional careers, particularly in the fields of creative writing, art criticism, cultural studies, or related disciplines. An interest in writing about art and in collaboratively developing a publication format is essential. A specific academic degree or extensive professional experience is not required.

The conversations with the artists will be held in German and English, so excellent proficiency in both languages is required. The texts may be written in either language.

What do we offer?

The writing period can be scheduled flexibly between January 4 and April 18, 2027. By the end of the stipend period, you will have completed:

  • texts of 6,000–8,000 characters per artist, each based in part on conversations with one of the three artists,
  • final versions of all texts, ready for publication,
  • editorial work towards the completion of the publication.

Regular in-person meetings and conversations with the three artists in Berlin are part of the fellowship. The writer does not have to be based in Berlin; however, travel expenses cannot be reimbursed.

For the duration of the fellowship, a work desk at Sammlung Hoffmann can be made available two days per week. You are also welcome to use our library.

Duration and Funding

Duration: January 4 to April 18, 2027
Funding: 3.000 € (gross) for the entire stipend period

Fellows

Time With Sophie Gips

In 2026, we are awarding the TIME WITH SOPHIE GIPS grant for the first time. The grant offers artists the opportunity to develop new works in dialogue with the theme or individual works of the respective collection presentation. Conceived as an invitation to open artistic production, the fellowship embraces a contemporary perspective on the collection. The works created during the fellowship will be presented as part of the 30th collection presentation from February 2027 on.

Stipends 2026/2027

Elisa Jule Braun

Depressed robots, foolish AIs, mum-avatars - these are the protagonists of Elisa Jule Braun’s videos and installations. Their settings: urban and rural living environments, more or less structured by digital technologies. And as it is in networks, something is always being transmitted: data, rituals, language, mood, movements or power, always including their interferences. Using means of visual anthropology, Braun dissects conflicts that lie in the tension between globalized capital and local reality.

Miriam Umiń

Miriam Umiń is an artist based between Berlin (DE) and New Brunswick (CA) whose practice examines the logistical and systemic conditions shaping how objects are produced, branded, and circulated. She approaches objects as part of broader networks influenced by labor, bureaucracy, and economic exchange, with a focus on how materials acquire aesthetic, political, and economic meaning. Through reinterpreting modes of circulation, her work considers the often invisible conditions that underpin cultural and artistic production.
